Yes, his peak performance was GGG2, where he outfought GGG. I think from here on out we will see a slow decline. It may not be too noticeable for a few more fights, but Canelo has a lot of miles and those knees dont get better over time. I don't think it matters much anymore as he has cemented his legacy with the second GGG fight. I really used to think he was overrated, but the Trout, lara, GGG fights have really changed my perception of him(especially that second GGG fight).
that is a excellent reply... understanding/separating the physical from the mental
physically... Canelo is either peaking, or close to peaking
mentally... he is still learning... and as you correctly pointed out, he is a high-IQ fighter and his team are clearly still molding/polishing him
I’m reminded of this watching the Jordan doc the last few weeks.
Young MJ was a freak of nature and could do things other players just weren’t capable of and his numbers were off the charts.
When he came back the first time he couldn’t jump out of the gym anymore but mentally he had pretty much mastered the game.
I think Canelo’s peak will be when he’s at his best mentally which probably won’t happen until some decline in his physical ability.

Yeah. It could be that Canelo is at the height of his physical ability + boxing IQ.
The boxing IQ part of the equation might still increase. But the physical ability part of the equation might have peaked, and perhaps it is already going down if the rumors of knee problems are true.
I believe physically he is at his peak.
As he reaches his late 20’s and 30’s inevitably his physical skills will naturally decline.
I believe the mental side of boxing he still has some growth. He’s a high iq fighter and takes his craft seriously so I think he will still improve.
I would say 29-32 he will be at his peak overall.

He turned pro at 15 years old and has had over 50 fights. A boxer is as strong and fast as they will ever be at age 25 to age 29. Age 30 is the traditional age that they start to lose a bit each year. It may not be exactly the same for every boxer but that is the norm. Canelo is a dedicated pro with good trainers and he has fought a variety of good fighters with different styles. He has probably peaked by now and is said to have knee problems, He can stay the same or lose a little bit by bit but it's unlikely he gets much better.
Is he still getting better and improving?
Or has he reached his highest level?
We just gotta wait and see I guess. Physically it doesn't get any better than where he is now. Hell probably be already past his physical best but the decline is slow at first and balanced by maturity and experience typically until about 32 or so when the physical decline can't be as easily compensated. The question really is how much Canelo has left to learn. Canelo was thrown in with top class fighters relatively early and has fought some of the best around. His experience against elite opponents and his confidence in the ring are already amongst the best in the sport so its hard to know how much improvement is possible, nor is it clear which fights would tell us one way or another.
My gut says there may be a little more room to improve but he can't be far off the best hell ever be.
He's probably found the right pacing for his fights from now on. He doesn't need to throw a ton of punches. I think the weight jumping has made him become more economical in his approach. He's definitely at the peak or even starting to look down from its zenith. I think physically we'll start to see some sort of decline in the not too far future.

naw man, he's too great to ever reach his true peak. We would die to look at it, like the opening of the Ark of the Covenant
So you think he is still getting better? Please vote in the poll.
