GGG did a good job of defending the title he won, against three guys.
Sergio did twice that.
obv sergio twice as good a legacy.
but ggg has not finished yet, he may even add another 17 defences and go past hopkins.
Yeah same. My first post of these forums in 2009 was asking about Martinez and who he was fighting next (John Duddy, they said. LOL). Huge fan. When the Cotto fight was made, I was so excited to finally see him fight and defeat a PPV star. I actually turned the fight off after the first round... couldn't watch!
But yeah, not to discredit Cotto, but Martinez was completely cooked by that point. Doesn't take any way of how epic his run was when he came out of nowhere and took boxing by storm. :boxing:
Yeah I saw Cotto come up and he was in great fights like with Torres. He was just the anti Trinidad when it came to personality. “What? For the fans?” I thought the crab walking and strafing style of Martinez would fluster Cotto. Martinez was lucky to get that win in Argentina in retrospect. Argentinian’s are great athletes. They hid the severity of Sergio’s knee injury and his physical condition. That’s boxing I guess, everyone’s in their best shape and had a great camp, until after they lose and then they tell u everything went wrong. To be fair I don’t remember Martinez making excuses post fight, he always seemed to be a pretty classy guy. I know he portrayed himself a bit of a model at times, but he was a good looking guy, and did come to fight. But yeah the extra long shorts covering the double knee braces wasent a good sign. I always remember the first round, but Martinez did hang in the there much longer than most remember.
i thought you were supposed to be supporting GGG, not putting him down.
but yeh ok that works too.
I'm not supposed to be doing anything, man, Im just trying to add context to the debate. More information is good surely?
If you believe Sergio will leave a more respected legacy I ain't gonna waste my time trying to argue you out of it. I'm happy to wait for the opinions of the historians of the future... Far as I can see it none of us here are really in a position to claim some monopoly on objectivity. :lol1:
Asking Martinez to step up is the equivalent to asking why ggg will never fight Andrade or why he officially ducked Charlo or why he ducked Chenko that one time. You guys really never ask why Martinez didn’t give Rubio who held the belt first a chance. So maybe he saw Rubio as a paper champ and since Golovkin won everything off a vacancy, I’m sure there was no reason to take Golovkin seriously. You must understand that Sergio had put in the work but was never afforded the opportunity to receive those vacant handouts. So why would he make it that easy on Golovkin? Think man
Another post in another thread that contradicting yourself with your own argument all because of your own agenda.
This is you
"GGG was paper champ so Martinez never took him serious"
"GGG ducked Martinez"
"GGG ducked charlo" but by your own admission why would GGG take Charlo serious when see your own damn point above "GGG was a paper champ so Martinez didnt take him serious"
Who did Charlo beat for that WBC belt? Oh yeah, he didnt beat anyone, he was literally gifted the belt.
You forget that?
Who did Andrade beat for the VACANT WBO belt?
So Charlo and Andrade are just as trash as GGG right because they "didnt fight champions".
He ducked Derevychanko?
Yeah, because Canelo tested positive for PEDs right? And you expect GGG to fight Derevychanko and then in 2 months turn around and fight Canelo right?
I'd bet ****ing money you think Canelo didnt duck Derevychanko because "he didnt want to pay him" lmfao.
Gaele was stripped because he didnt want to fight GGG who was his mandatory. He later knocked Gaele out.
Canelo vacated the WBC belt because he didnt want to fight GGG. GGG later fought Canelo in two highly competitive controversial fights that anyone who isnt a bias fangirl knows GGG won at least one. Wanna defend that 118-110 Canelo card?
GGG beat Lemieux for the IBF.
That's 3 out of the 4 belts right there and 2 guys didnt even want to fight GGG while holding that belt.
"GGG only fights for vacated belts"
Yeah because it's his fault that the "champs" dont want to fight him just like it was his fault he fought Vanes instead of Canelo when Canelo got caught with PEDs right?
What a ****ing low IQ hater
The Pavlik that had literally just come out of alcohol rehab? i thought you were supposed to be supporting GGG, not putting him down.
but yeh ok that works too.
seeing as they were elite welters, and an elite welter beat GGG too, then there would be no change.
until you realise that sergio was a welter too, so it tips things in his favour. What you really mean is why didny GGG manage to win anything above MW.
The Pavlik win tops GGG's whole resume anyway.
The Pavlik that had literally just come out of alcohol rehab?
It is the second time this year that Pavlik has entered rehab; he only stayed two weeks the first time. Dunkin said Pavlik defended the middleweight title against Sergio Martinez on April 17 in Atlantic City, about 10 days after being released from the world-renowned clinic the first time.
https://www.eurosport.co.uk/boxing/pavlik-in-rehab_sto2560519/story.shtml
I have read another account says his first rehab stint was in January so I ain't sure which is accurate, but either way...
Dude even acknowledges he'd been an alcoholic since pretty much beating JT, man. Sergio's one of my favourite fighters ever, and I absolutely ain't trying to discredit him but the Pavlik that Maravilla fought wasn't the dude that beat Taylor.
Martinez win over Pavlik tops anything on Golovkin's record
also, Martinez would fight anyone
we told you guys that Golovkin needed to take the fights he was avoiding
It's not as bad you say. Kell Brook was an undefeated champion at welterweight and was widely regarded as the top guy (at the time) behind Floyd and Pac. Golovkin beat him down quickly. Paul had a good welterweight run but was also in the shadow Floyd, Oscar and Pac. I consider Lemieux a good and very dangerous fighter by the time Golovkin fought him. His performances against Rosado, Macklin, Wade, Monroe, Geal, Murray and Stevens were all sensational stand out performances against championship worthy opposition. His robbery and razor close rematch with Canelo was better than anything Sergio had on his resume. I also don't consider Sergio's stoppage losses to Margarito and Cotto wins for him as far as his legacy being better.
Huh ?!?!? (the bold)
I don't know of anyone who gave Brook a chance vs GGG.
LeMeh and the rest were C level at best.
I find it strange that after had GGG never fought Nelo and/or Jacobs, his age would never be mentioned.
I'd say Sergio had many more moments than GGG. From the 1st Paul fight to Murray. I'd expect guys like Serg to take the high road when it comes to critiquing other guys.
GGG has Jacobs (while talented, Quillin is his only signature win). That flash kd lost it for him vs GGG. If Mora had real power....
GGG at the most logical best is 1-1 vs Nelo.
The 2nd fight > the 1st performance wise.
Nelo elevated his game while GGG still relied on his jab and headhunting.
Talents aside, true fans of the sport have to go by actual resumes. Prior to Jacobs, GGG's resume is pretty sad.

I could only imagine what you would write about GGG if two welterweights knocked him out and he fought to a draw with a fighter who went 7-39-6 in his career.
seeing as they were elite welters, and an elite welter beat GGG too, then there would be no change.

Sergio did make a strong case for himself stopping Paul Williams ...
GGG has a great chin ... but a plodding style.. styles make fights..
Qe onda bro? Estos weyes Se asen pendejos
Can’t argue with that. I liked both guys. I remember when Martinez was training for Cotto. They pushed the cameras away when it was time for Martinez to train, made me concerned. A picture of Martinez came out of him looking pretty chubby for a guy that was known as a once cyclist and usually in great shape, made me concerned. Just before the fight my Dad said that Martinez “Was leaking oil”, made me concerned. Still I believed in him. But he showed up with two knee braces and moved like his feet were glued to the canvas. I was humbled.

Why didn't Martinez step up to the plate when both he and GGG held a piece of the middleweight world title and GGG challenged him to a unification fight????? Martinez turned the offer to fight GGG down flat as did Martinez's conqueror Cotto who also turned down a unification fight with GGG. GGG can only fight those willing to share a ring with him. He can't make guys fight him if they don't want to fight him.
