Yeah James was special, fighting as a HW carrying all that chubby and he could stand in the pocket with legit HWs. Hell of a fighter.
Yeah his diet was supposedly terrible, I read he used to drink fizzy drinks in-between rounds of sparring.
My favourite Toney performance was when he rolled back the years against Jirov. The way he dismantled Iran Barkley was super impressive too.
Yeah I’ve seen that before, love watching James Toney, just a real craftsman, a quality technician.
I got the chance to meet him in Vegas during Canelo-GGG 2 fight week. He was a very cool guy, I wondered whether he’d be hostile cause of his persona and that but he was a sound fella.
Those 4 walls must have seen some quality sparring over the years.

I just refreshed youtube and first on was this.

I’d read they had fought as amateur’s but had never seen the footage.
I love watching stuff like that myself, you could see flashes of the fighters they were going to become.

Hearns looked so young didnt he its hard to recognize him, Aaron was born with that head he never looked any different lol.
I love these old sessions with the greats, youtube been throwing a bunch of them at me lately .

Great find bro!
I believe this fight was in 1976 at the National Golden Gloves. Pretty sure it was the final too. Hearns was only 17 whilst Pryor was 20.

It is a great fight, Pryor wasn't showing any respect to Hearns who wasn't known as a hard punching amateur.
Both of them were good amateurs and both of them missed the olympics by losing to Howard Davis.
Davis Jr was some amateur. Just never truly adapted to the pros. I think they made a huge mistake allowing him to travel abroad for his first major fight. That fight was at Rangers’ ground Ibrox. I think the crowd shook him.
One of those obscure gems.
Hearns started at 135 and went to CW now thats some weightclass jumping.

Yes it was a good fight, Hearns was so gangly his power didnt come until some muscle caught up with his height.
Watching the bout its hard to imagine the impact these two were to go on and have on boxing.
