GGG had famously beaten two number 1 contenders, Jacobs and Derev.
Which MW ATGs and HoFers have that equal number of wins against the top contender?
Or even from any division, any ATGs or HoFs.
He fought Canelo twice who was #1 in the division both times. That count?
For the last 6-7 years, Golovkin/Canelo were always the #1 guy in the division. Hard for them to fight the #1 guys when they ARE that guy. I went as far back as 2013 and GGG was always ranked #1 at MW.
TBRB December 2013 Middleweight Rankings:

10. Andy Lee
Kirkland wasn't ever a lightweight, man (in fact if anything he was a natural MW+ who boiled down) although he was out of the ring 18 months and had reportedly blown up past 200lbs. He was always bursting at the seems at 154 and at age 31 it's entirely possible making weight (155) hurt him more than Canelo but then Canelo was also ready to move up so it's swings and roundabouts.
Vanes had been out 2 years and was hitting 30 anyway - about the age most guys would be moving up to their natural class. Vanes had been fighting at 154 since 19 years old and chances are if he was to go on fighting it woulda been at MW anyway.
In terms of quality there probably wasn't a great deal in it... both dudes were kinda walk-throughs, though James' reputation as a punching machine meant folk kinda gave him a slight chance despite the severe deficiencies showed up by Ishida and Molina.
Difference being of course that Kirkland was hand picked by a dude who could have anyone whereas Vanes was a late replacement opponent on a restricted budget... albeit an entirely pointless one to my mind.
EDIT: Now I'm confused... were you talking about Khan or Kirkland with the Lighweight thing?... cos it's like you're talking about Kirkland with the jail time and retirement.
Kirkland. He fought at LW. He was however also weighing heavy, yes. And yet, he wasn't the one who had the pay the other a penalty-fine for coming in over the limit.
Really makes you think, doesn't it?
After seeing how disgusting Kirkland was in that video violently beating on a guy much smaller and not even close to skill wise made me go back and watch Canelo scramble his brains...
Well I can't say I wish serious harm on any fighter, but it doesn't mean watching karma in action can't be satisfying.. :lol1:
He’s washed up and I lost a lot of respect for him seeing that BS beating he was giving some poor guy who likes 80lbs smaller. I would never train at that gym. It was disgusting watching and his team kept egging him on.
Never saw that, but I don't have a lotta time for dudes who carry on like that. At this point I don't think Kirkland would be a huge loss to the sport.
I actually had a black guy bet me $$$$. Took Kirkland to beat Canelo
Easy money I woulda said. Even at his best James was a Rock em Sock em dude... ain't gonna say he couldn't be very dangerous against a certain kinda fighter but to anyone with a bit of skill he was a sitting duck. Still, fun fighter to watch as far as he went. I think he was due a comeback but it was cancelled by 'Rona if I remember right. Can't see it ending well.
Tell me about the Canelo - Kirkland fight. How he fought a career lightweight. Who had a 3 year retirement.
And was in fúcking jail.
Tell me how that is better.
Tell me.
Just tell me, you dícksucking loser.

GGg fans are terrible!!!
Fighting after a 3 year retirement and a weight class you’ve never boxed at tends to do that....
Fkn stupid idiot. Thanks for wasting my time teaching you. Schools out now

If Vanes is a bum, why did Lara struggle with him?
Mayweather struggled with Maidana, Pac struggled with Horn, Loma struggled with Salido. It happens
Dogshit Vanes was retired for two whole years after going 3-3 AT 154 before Borat drug him up to 160 and out of retirement. A true joke fight and coward move by Borat
Marciano is criticized as having one of the worst ATG resumes.
Marciano didnt stop fights from being made like Borat did
Marciano didnt outright choose absolute BUMS like Vanes, Rick Rolls, or whoever this tomato can he wants to fight now in place of Canelo, rematching a fight he LOST in Dervenchenko, rematching a fight he arguably lost in Jacobs, Charlo, BJS, Andrade, Lara, etc.

when Derevy was #1, he had just lost to Jacobs... and was NOT ranked ahead of Charlo/Andrade
" rankings " = wankings
rankings simply do not work, which is why historians do not paint-by-numbers
WHO did you beat, with consideration given to when/how... is all that matters
Jacobs was a HUGE underdog, and given no chance whatsoever
a better question would be... what supposed great has two worst "best" wins?
Canelo beat BOTH GGG and Jacobs. yes he doesnt count, we need someone who beat just 1 like GGG did his entire career.
Canelo has likely fought nearly a dozen number 1 contenders, though he is only half way through his career, so hes not the match I am looking for.
Exactly match? Not sure but I think maybe Gatti can go one worse with 0. Are we talking #1 contender per a particular ranking body or per Ring or what?
Whichever way you cut it though Golovkin's record ain't particularly strong, if he gets in to the HoF it'll be based on longevity more than anything I'd guess.
I agree with you bro.
was waiting on that " he shot doe" excuse soon as he started facing real competition....where was the killer, most feared...mr 154-175 /.....just another good fighter the media made out to be something he was not
I think Marciano at HW but I'm not sure...someone should check.
When he rematched Walcott, Joe was number one contender. 1
when he fought Roland, Charles, and ****ell, Nino Valdes was number one contender.
When he fought Archie, Archie had beaten Valdes for the spot. 2
Some people like to claim he was ducking Valdes but really he was just clearing out more legitimate challengers from the perspective of fans from his era. No one was calling for Valdes, plenty thought Roland got robbed though. No one was calling for Valdes when he fought Charles either, plenty thought the former champ would get Rock though. When he fought ****ell that was because Archie and Nino were busy with one another. Archie beat Nino and Rock beat Archie.
So during his championship run, I'm pretty sure, Rock beat only two HOFs who were number one contender.....I'm not sure he could have beaten more....and...I don't know that Charles wasn't number one when they actually fought, I just know based on Ring annuals Nino was number one for most of Marciano's reign as champ. So maybe Charles got a bump to one at some point during the year and by year's end Nino was back. I don't know. Outside of Charles, even if Roland or ****ell were number one contenders I'm not sure they're even HOF'ers. I'd have to check that.
With a reign of Walcott, Charles x2, Roland, ****ell, and Moore....it's not a big surprise he only beat two number one HOFers

could do more champions but not worth my time...we all know GGG didnt fight a lot of top competition to have been hyped the way he was.....he struggled with every top middleweight he faced....didnt beat any of them clearly, and it had very little to do with being shot, he just was never THAT( meaning ATG level) good
I agree with you bro.
sorry guys I may have misled you, I mean JUST 2 number one contender wins, not more.
um yeh I just realised that Derev wasnt title defence at all, so I need to adjust the question to those titlist who beat JUST A SINGLE number 1 contender in their whole career.
Widens parameters a bit.
That doubles what ggg has done 🤣
