GGG vs Beterbiev would be a great show at 175 if GGG can beat Canelo. Also AB-AJ @ HW
Canelo just KO'd LHW champion Kovalev at 175, who people were talking about fighting Beterbiev. Beterbiev himself is almost as old as GGG is.
So if GGG can beat Canelo in the trilogy at 160, a great storyline and show would be for him to appear to be "daring to be great" and take a final legacy "fight" jumping up two weight classes to fight Beterbiev.
In reality, GGG vs Kovalev should have happened years ago. That was the hardcore "boxing" fans dream show but the media never pushed it, probably because both are east euro and the media didn't realize until a few years later that a huge fanbase existed for them in the US. But in general they seem to prefer pushing shows between a white east euro "boxer" and a black American "boxer," or a black American vs a Hispanic "boxer," or at minimum, an east euro "boxer" vs a Hispanic "boxer." But as for two white east euros vs each other, it's very rare those "fights" are pushed for or promoted. Beterbiev vs Gvozdyk was a very rare exception, and even there the Russia vs Ukraine element was leaned on to promote in the US, and while this was not done in the US, it wouldn't surprise me if elsewhere in the world, the Christian vs Muslim angle was also pushed to promote the show. That's just me speculating though.
So GGG vs Kovalev definitely should have happened, but IMO the big reason it didn't was because both represent similar demographics, which IMO media and promoters thought would narrow the demographic pool of the audience, so to speak. I think they're often wrong in that assumption but that's my opinion, and IMO they have a different one.
In any case, they messed that one up, and now Kovalev and GGG both appear past it, and Beterbiev probably will be soon too. But if GGG is allowed to appear to turn back the clock with his new trainer and "beat" Canelo in the trilogy, then they could make up for the lack of GGG-Kovalev in the past by making GGG vs Beterbiev show at 175. Then if Beterbiev wins, I want to see him move up to heavyweight. As powerful as he is at 175, he may have to cut a lot of weight to get there. It would be cool to see a bulked out, 230 pound Brock Lesner-esque ball of muscle Beterbiev at heavyweight putting on a show. Beterbiev vs Gassiev could be fun, although same "problem" applies to getting it made.
You know what would be really cool? Beterbiev vs Anthony Joshua. Andy Ruiz beating AJ worked visually as a show and was more entertaining than most "boxing matches," and Ruiz is no taller or faster than Beterbiev I dont believe. Beterbiev vs AJ would work even better.
Nah but you know what, even better than that, Wilder vs Beterbiev. Now that would be an interesting show, clash of styles. Every time they touched each other, one would hit the canvas. That fight could have about 15 total knockdowns before its done. And that one fits the demographic makeup of a main event "show" that promoters and media seem to prefer, not 100% ideal because it lacks a Hispanic "boxer" but still something that IMO would fit their preferences.
