I'm a firm believer in that MOST PEOPLE don't have a mind of their own and generally go along with whatever's popular or trendy.
Which brings me to this topic, I've heard some people in boxing circles sometimes put JCC was a top fighter of all time, but I'VE NEVER heard somebody say De La Hoya, although everybody knows he was good. People will say Chavez because in general because he's more loved (media loved his 100 fights back in the 1990s, it was like a circus act).
But lets talk X's and O's and do the eye test. De La Hoya had better footwork, he was quicker, better defense, probably a harder puncher after he matured, and was overall a much better fighter. Not only that he destroyed him in both fights (Chavez was only 31 or 32 lets not act like ancient).
So for those of you who will rank Chavez higher, forget his 100 fights and your love for him, but HOW?

It's a fair argument. Oscar took some bad fights late in his career a has worked to ruin his career in retirement, but prime DLH was no joke.
Chavez was also a little man starting at 126 or 130 so beating him at WW in his 99th pro fight...after he'd been in many wars...does not mean Oscar was ever greater.
Nonetheless it is something that can realistically be contested.
Some people dont like when I day this but I think prime DLH beats Floyd...7-5 fight with a retired DLH...dont know if Floyd can do that to a 3-5 years younger version of DLH
Both guys carried boxing in their eras. Chavez was dominant in his wins. ODLH was competitive in some of his wins.
You rank them as you like them. There is no one that can tell you officially who is on top.
ODLH at times in under-appreciated.

i rate oscar higher more versatile, won titles in more divisions, fought and beat more world champions and hall of famers.
fought on better terms with whitaker
just a better fighter than chavez in my book
DLH has a better skillset then Chavez.
Not 1 person in this thread could break down what Chavez does better then DLH...like I knew you all wouldn't
Chavez does a better job @ being a masculine hombre !
- -What grade U in?
Oscar prime was 147-154
Jcc prime 135-140.
DLH has a better skillset then Chavez.

Dont u feel that Chavez full body of work overall is more impressive than Hoyas ?? I do . I feel the context of ranking an all time great is not just based on who is the better fighter technically or based off head to head . De la hoya was technically a bit better than chavez but regardless of chavez age hoya fought him when jcc was 16 years into his pro career . Most fighters are retired by then . Chavez was just great so he could compete at the top level when he was old ( again not by age , but by wear and tear and time in the ring etc ). Chavez took alot of shots and he was a smaller man he is bound to age less gracefully then your straight forward boxer . I hope that sheds some light on to why I rank Chavez as an all time great higher than hoya. I agree hoya was technically the better fighter but he doesnt have the body of work Chavez had imo . I think they should be spoken in the same breath all time great wise . But I personally rank Chavez a bit higher for the reasons I've stated above .
The best fighter CHAVEZ BEAT WAS HECTOR CAMACHO. Chavez doesn't have 1 win over a fighters who could beat De La Hoya.
Chavez's "take 2 punches to land 1" style doesn't work against elite fighters with movement like DLH
He was 34 his 2nd fight. De La Hoya vs Chavez was at SUPER LIGHTWEIGHT (most people think it was welterweight the 1st time). Chavez was a super lightweight.
Chavez had poor defense, but a granite chin.
And if we're going to be honest...Randall beat Chavez both times. Chavez got a gift decision over Randall the 2nd time.
Now this I agree with. Chavez bailed in the 2nd fight as soon as the opportunity presented itself.
That's irrelevant..what did Chavez do better then De La Hoya
I dont think one person who Has disagreed with you that oscar is better technically . Ranking them historically has alot more than that to factor in . But I will tell you one thing off the top of my head , chavez was a better body puncher than oscar without a doubt . But i agree with you oscar was technically a better fighter imo . Prime for prime ( let's say at 140 ) even tho oscar was not quite in his prime at that point lets say peak oscar but at 140 . That is a barnburner of a matchup and either man could win that fight . That would be one hell of an all time matchup , and I would pick Hoya in one hell of a fight that's close via decision . But I still rank Chavez higher as an all time great without a doubt .
I was watching Robert Garcia break down what's harder to do? Pacquiao winning 8 weight class es or Floyd being unbeatable. Well the two fought each other right,? So generally speaking Floyd win, but what is to say about those who rank Pacquiao as a better fighter. I see the comparison between jcc and Dela Hoya.

P4P no, Delahoya like Floyd fought name fighters when they were toward the end of their career . Chavez fought and beat prime fighters Chavez lost only toward the end of his career after what 89 fights he finally lost and we all know he didn't train for those fights because he became an alcoholic and coke addict
That's irrelevant..what did Chavez do better then De La Hoya
Chavez was clearly the better and greater fighter even Oscar has admitted to this.
Don’t be fooled because Oscar beat a past his prime Chavez.
CLEARLY? explain how then...you can't
Much has to do with Chavez dominance at super featherweight and lightweight. De La Hoya faced Chavez late in Chavez's career if was earlier the outcome might have been different and also the winner.
you don't know anything about boxing..thats why you can't explain why the outcome would be different.
