Answer: They were both scams and hype jobs.
Cotto was probably one of the weakest MW "Champs" in modern MW history but his Puerto Rican fan base coupled with Alvarez's Mexican base made for a lucrative payday for the sport. The smart money knew Cotto had been a shot fighter for a while and the only surprising thing about the fight was Canelo's lack of killer instinct against his older, slower, smaller opponent.
Kovalev meanwhile was coming off a life and death fight against a virtual unknown and had been "one punch away from retiring," Couple that with the fact that the vulnerable Kovalev was coming into the fight after a short camp and you had a KO waiting to happen. The hype in this fight was Alvarez going after "4 Championship Belts" lol and moving up in weight, but except for casual fans there was never a doubt about the outcome.
Cotto was coming off the biggest win of his career? Miguel beat a 39 year old guy coming off an 18 month layoff after multiple surgeries, wearing 2 knee braces, who looked to fighting on 1 leg. Those are just facts.
I agree but on paper and historically it was huge for Cotto. He won a 4th divisional title and the lineal championship well past his best weight . That's why I put arguably . No one expected cotto to win that fight they didnt give him a hope in hell and he solidified his position as one of the best fighters from Puerto Rico's with that win . But i agree 100% Martinez was injured etc. But that's not cottos fault and no one picked him to win that fight . Historically it was right up there with his best wins stipulations or not

Hindsight is 20-20 so yes, those are facts. It's important to remember what everyone was saying at the time though:

A lot of people were picking Martinez to win, even if he wasn't 100 percent going in, because they felt that Cotto was simply too small to compete at middleweight.
It's also worth mentioning that Martinez himself made it a point to not blame his knee for losing.
True. When Canelo didn't dominate Cotto, after Pac had destroyed, was a revelation that maybe this guy was a bit overrated.
I think Cotto also deserves credit for exceeding expectations. Also, the style match-ups were completely different when you talk about Canelo and Pacquiao vs. Cotto. Pacquiao overwhelmed his opponents with speed and volume while Canelo is more calculating and Cotto was obviously better suited for a chess match than violent exchanges.
Cotto was very competitive in a fight where he was outweighed by at least 15 pounds. I thought he held his own very well against a bigger, stronger Canelo. Even Kovalev was boxing well for most of the fight. He stayed behind his jab but got caught in the end. I would call these good but not great wins for Canelo.
That's a fair assessment. Spot on.
That’s BS.
Most posters here claimed he is shot and lost his heart after plasterito demolished him.
2 beatings later he was back to his prime here in boxingscene against floyd at 31.
Then almost 4 years later at 35 he’s back and improved against Canelo? Wtf. I didn’t realize that’s how this sport goes when every fighter in history is against that graph.
He was past his prime against Canelo and has no advantage over him except for experience. He was a blown up light middleweight and has even a flabby tummy at welter.
Yet canelo still failed to make a statement against him. The bigger, younger, stronger and faster guy coming to the prime of his life, had a competitive match with cotto.
That was disappointing to say the least.

TRUTH . Couldnt have said it better myself. Maybe both guys were past their best days however they were both world champions, and future hall of famers. Cotto was coming off arguably the biggest win / accomplishment of his career and kovalev was a consensus top 5 light heavyweight. Not much to complain about . Who else should nelo have fought at the time ? I know we all wanted ggg but he won the lineal and wbc title and made that matchup even bigger . As for kova I'd say team cinnamon picked a pretty tough fight to test the waters with at light heavy . I think kova at LHW is a riskier fight than BJS at super middle . And I'd rather have seen that fight than nelo vs Andrade tbh .

You noobs are sad as ****kkk canelo beat the fucck outta you’re fighters so now you clowns can’t take it.
I’ll tell you what’s a scam Fury is scam who is on his way to an 8 yr ban.
Really good, intelligent response!
Cotto was no more of a middleweight then Canelo was at the time..both were 154 fighters who fought at a catchweight.... Cotto is a proven elite boxer and so was Kovalev..Both BEAT OTHER WORLD CHAMPS AND ATG'S.. How can you tarnish them and act liek they were nothing?

Lol ask Martinez or 180+lb Geale whether Cotto was shot. Cotto was the lineal champ and being described as new and improved with Roach in his corner. As for Kovalev he was the overall most accomplished fighter in the division and remained the number 2 ranked champ coming off of beating two undefeated LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHTS including avenging a previous loss. There are many fighters who become champs by claiming vacant belts or never test the waters in higher divisions, but you're somehow criticizing Canelo for taking on future hall of famers who remained #1-2 in their divisions, including one who he jumped up to his 5th division to face? Ridiculous.

Like Pacquiao fought everybody at their best...
What this gotta do with pacquiao??!
Am i wrong to say cotto was past his best when he fought Canelo? And canelo was the younger, bigger, stronger and faster fighter yet he failed to demolished cotto?
I was actually expecting Canelo’s advantages to be on full display. And boy was I wrong.

The cotto fight was competitive, a good big man beating a good smaller man. But the kovalev was special matchmaking, Sergei was having trouble taking in any types of head trauma these days ie he wasn't responding good to punches. Hey man srl did the same thing with Donny lalonde, do you truly think he would have moved up to lt. Heavyweight if the competition was real? Not calling him a coward never in a million years, but the size difference of 175 is too great for sugar.
I really have no idea what ya'll want out of this sport..ya'll praise people who fight no one while trashing people who fight proven boxers
It’s sickening at this point. Boxing fans are the worst sports fans on Earth.
Canelo is a talented fighter who is throwing shade at his own career by nitpicking every advantage he can. Worst apart about it is he doesn’t need those advantages. I don’t know if its just Oscar but with Canelos clout he could of been lineal at 168 already and then gave Kovalev ample time with no stipulations so there wouldn’t be any haters to complain. Then win or lose he could of set up a clash for lineal at 175. He would of gotten so much more respect but instead his team plays games, makes stipulations to gain a advantage, and does this to fighters on the slide. Why would you need to use the negotiation table against past prime fighters like this? I think Canelo is a great fighter but it puts asterisks next to his wins.

Attention to details though. Cotto was indeed past his best during that time and every advantage there was goes to Canelo yet he failed to make a statement. I was disappointed with his performance, he was bigger, faster, younger and has better reflexes but ended up in a close fight lol.
If we just gonna base everything on names on resume then floyd is flat out the goat by a mile. But attention to detail matters. Cmon you’re better than that.
I don't have a problem with smart matchmaking
This how i feel.... I have no problem with either fight. It was perfect matchmaking and all parties benefited.
But i will be honest about the details surrounding the fight,
Basically don't call me hater for keeping shyt a hunnid

It's simple to understand, if you don't let your emotions get the best of you.
Every good fighter has an arc to their career. They start out young and make their debut, then they start getting more experience, improve and eventually they peak, gradually they age and then they fade. Are Cotto and Kovalev world class fighters? Of course.
Were they world class fighters as they aged and taken punishment. I don't think so.
I respect all fighters but it's just a fact that even great fighters fade and become vulnerable.
I just don't like when promoters try to hype fights into something they're not.
BTW I'm saying the fights were scams not the fighters.
