One of the great fights of all time.
Jim Lampley and Larry Merchant did a bad job of calling this fight. Most smart fans saw the slow beating Taylor was getting. The HBO crew knowing Chavez's contract was up with the company and he was going to showtime were unfairly pro Taylor.
Watch this fight with no volume and you will see Chavez breaking him down round after round.
Plus Georgie Benton was telling Taylor slow down round after round he knew Taylor was going to fade in the 2nd part of the fight. Even Lou Duva and Benton told Taylor he needed the 12th round they knew Chavez had beaten him up badly.
Before the start of the 12th Taylor had brain damage he was confused and lost in the ring not sure where the correct corner was at.
Taylor's 20 landed did less damage than 1 of Chavez's. Two hours after the fight Taylor was in bad shape in the hospital Chavez was playing blackjack.
Still probably my favorite fight all time.

Still probably my favorite fight all time. That is about how I remember it. Taylor was an excellent fighter with very fast hands. Chavez was a great fighter who was far more rugged and hit much harder than Taylor and gave him a bad beating. Taylor landed a lot of punches but they did not bother the tough Chavez who landed the much harder and more damaging blows. The fight ruined Taylor who went rapidly down hill afterwards.
This was a great fight and one of the most controversial endings of all time. one of those fights you can watch on a yearly basis and still enjoy it and see different things every time.
