Mikey dropped Vargas hard in the 5th.
Vargas was still on very unsteady legs in the 6th. Mikey basically did nothing in the 6th.
It was frustrating to watch just like a young JMM. But hopefully, he changes in to an old JMM - an exciting version.
There are far more boring fighters out there. Mikey is a counter puncher, and a smart boxer. I think he could have turned it up last night and finished off Vargas, but he chose to go the distance. Hopefully he fights Manny this year and it’s a better fight. I would still like to see him fight Danny or go to 140 for Prograis.
Mikey's just highly skilled with the basics of boxing. He keeps things simple and doesn't really stray from what works for him. The problem is now, fighting at 147lbs, I don't think he has anywhere near the devastating power he had at the lower weights so your gonna see more UDs from him...Similiar to Pac moving up from the divisions where he did most of his damage.
Most boring fighter over guys like Mayweather, Rigo, Sergio Martinez, BJS, Miguel Vasquez or Mickey Bey? Come on, its not even close.
Mikey's a fundamentally sound and patient fighter who likes to sit back and counter punch. There's only one fight from his that was probably boring and it was because the opponent was afraid to attack Mikey - it was a bad style match up.
Mikey a slow starter but he is methodical he always has been. He wears on you like a cheap suit. Once you make a mistake it over. Mikey could have taken the easy route and moved back to 140. The OP sounds like a hater.
Would 140 have been the easy rout? Ramirez, Taylor, Prograis. Personally I believe that he smartly went for big money over risk. The top 3 junior welter's are no easy pickings!
This guy's fights lack any sort of suspense...like AT ALL
He’s just an uninteresting person. His name, his look, fighting style, very basic. But good fighter nonetheless.
I get sick of seeing fighters with horrible technique.
It's frustrating seeing fighters who don't keep their guards up, or tuck their chin, who circle the wrong way, who pull straight back, who drop their hands when retracting a punch, who don't lead with the jab, who don't double the jab, who wing their punches.
Watching textbook fighters like Mikey isn't boring - it is a pleasure. Although he needed to work the body more against Vargas, apart from that it was good. He shows incredible discipline, humility and respect to the art of boxing, knowing that it is the art itself which will see him through.
Seeing him doing so well through his career is a vindication that the art of boxing works. The stuff that you get taught in the gym works. It isn't just about athletes with power and speed and coordination and determination. It is boxing itself.
U need to go lay on some train tracks. U just compared him to Barrera. All he does is jab, 1-2, 1-2, jab, jab, 1-2, jab over and over and over and over and over and over and over. Don't do that again
It seems simple yet Mikey has landed that 1-2 over and over again on everybody except Errol Spence Jr. so far. If his attack is really that predictable then it's up to his opponent to take that away and so far Spence has been the only one to do it.
Meh he doesnt belong at 47, he barely belongs at 140 tbh. In the lower weights he was a textbook fighter who had explosive power, the last part is missing now, so he has to win through calculated performances or determination like against Broner. He should have stayed at 135 and his limit should have been 140
He was a very good and most times an exciting fighter at the lower weights, but since moving up from 135 to 140-147 to fight bigger guys he isn't as special anymore and not as exciting but that usually happens with most fighters. You can't deny his technique though, great precision when he does attack.
Felt like he could have got Vargas outta there at not too much risk to himself but who knows.
Almost seemed like he decided to carry him through the middle rounds to give the fans their 12 rounds in the main event on a new platform for Mikey but that's pretty far fetched

He's like MAB. and that's a huge compliment. both are masters of the fundamentals but don't really do anything flashy or "cute". every punch is technical and economical. Mikey is like Tim Duncan. does pretty much everything perfect but with no "special effects" (as Floyd would say).

I agree but like you mentioned Mexicans/Filipinos will buy the fight and that's enough to make it happen.
Right. It is prize fighting after all. It’s all about what the fights can generate financially. Mikey was my favourite fighter before his hiatus. In a way I admired how he was willing to risk to be great and step all the way up to Spence. But he was far from competitive in that fight, and in the end it was a bad taste for everyone. It will stop more people from stepping up like that. I mean it was cool at first, we wanted to believe, but then it was disappointing as far as a fight goes. Credit to his star power and likability for sure. Still he was in tough tonight, and it was a gutsy challenge. My brother said he will win but it will be tougher than the odds suggest. I understand the finances why the manny fight makes sense. It could be a entertaining war, but even then neither would be called the best in the division. If he looks bad vs Manny he will have achieved more on marketability than skill and that will be a shame.
Yep. But drama, love, hate, controversy, hype, overhype, negotiations, it all drives the sport. If Mikey wins the Manny sweepstakes, and looks like he will, I hope it’s competitive. It’s the only reason he’s still at 147 I’m sure. He has that good timing like JMM and Manny isn’t big either. But if he looks bad vs Manny, and I like both guys I will be very disappointed. He did enough to win tonight in a close fight. Gets the Manny fight due to his fame and earning power more than actually earning it.

Mikey Garcia has got to be the most boring fighter ever. I'd rather watch paint dry. | BoxingScene Community
