two of the slickest middleweights and best counter punchers ever, great chins many similarities....Toney had the edge in speed and power was a bit more mobile but i see a nip and tuck fight similar to Toneys fights with McCallum, who wins and why?
Toney, clearly and easily.
Canelo lost to GGG. Toney would have clowned GGG. Toney had some legit, ATG abilities. His inside fighting was insanely good.
How is this even a question?
Canelo has struggled versus good defenders and toney was one of the best. Toney also could make you look really bad and I think he is the physically stronger of the two which would play a role
- -Take the challenge that all fail at!
Whose the best prime fighter where he showed good defense?
Stay tuned, boys, this gonna get good!
Canelo hits harder is more accurate has a better chin and is much more disciplined than Tony.
Canelo by UD.
What? Have you watched James Toney? True Toney got fat when he got older but at middleweight he was a savage.

I would pick toney via UD . He would outwork canelo down the last stretch his stamina is way better and punches better in combination, also toney would counter him.all night up until that point . Canelo would have to try and pot shot and work the body on the inside. I doubt canelo could win this fight but damn he would make it good .
Where does Toney agree he lost the fight? It was a close fight but not a clear win for Tiberi. Tiberi got visibly rocked more, got a point deduction for low blows and the rds were give and take depending what you were looking for.
Those fights you mentioned were not close, Only Reggie Johnson but brother it sounds like Toney waxed your ex wife and sent you the videos?
The Mccallum fights weren’t wins for Toney? You tripping, Toney clearly won those fights.

^^^ Right there he admits it.
He CLEARLY lost the fight to Tiberi. CLEARLY. There is no argument what so ever.
What fights weren't close? Thadzi? Are you for real :lol1: Thadzi beat him easily and won the decision for fuck sake. Thadzi beat him EASILY.
Williams got a draw, that fight was close. Sosa was close. They all were.
You are actually trying to argue that Toney clearly beat McCallum in the 2nd fight? Because actually NO he did not clearly win that fight at all.
The 3rd fight he won clearly yes. When McCallum was finished. The first two were not clear by any stretch of the imagination and you can easily argue he lost both. Especially the 2nd one.
Canelo didn't struggle with Jose Cotto. He was momentarily stunned and dominated every other second of the fight before stopping him.
James Toney was beaten CLEARLY by Dave Tiberi. Absolutely clearly lost that fight. And Toney himself admits it.
As for McCallum, the only time Toney beat McCallum clearly was when Mccallum was finished in the 3rd fight.
I don't go off fantasy I'm afraid, I go off what actually happened. Toney lost to Tiberi, lost to Thadzi, drew with Williams and arguably lost to a number of average fighters. That's the reality.

My bad you are right, against Tiberi wasn’t his last fight at MW. I just remember Toney complaining about the weight and saying it was his last fight. After Tiberi he went on to fight the wars with Mccallum, both of which Toney won. That Toney beats Tiberi each time but he did struggle with Tiberi, just like Canelo struggled with Cottoa brother.
I get your point but at his best. Against Mccallum, against Jirov, against Barkley Toney was a great fighter.

Are you referring to Dave Tiberi? Because that wasn't his last fight at Middleweight and he absolutely DID lose that fight which James Toney openly admits himself. He lost that fight clearly.
He did not beat Sosa soundly at all. There was nothing "sound" about that fight he racked up and early lead and was outworked down the stretch and you could easily argue he lost.
Ok so what's a "focused Toney" then? Which fight was he "focused" in as opposed to all these other ones where he didn't look good at all? Maybe the reality is he just isn't that good?

Right on but I disagree. Toney with the point deduction won but struggled I give you that. It was his last fight at 160.
He beat Sosa soundly and struggled with Johnson at his first defense.
That’s why I said a focused Toney. Toney lost fights because of his lack of discipline and bad habits.

James Toney at 160 lost to Dave Tiberi and arguably lost to Sanderline Williams and Merqui Sosa and got a gift against Reggie Johnson.
Toney's only impressive win at 160 was Micheal Nunn and that was a fight he was getting schooled in for the vast majority of it.
He could easily lose to both Canelo and GGG. I don't see anything from his actual career to suggest he has an easy night with either of them.

Great fight, I lean towards Toney by close, but clear decision.
I think Toney is the more skilled fighter, but people thinking he walks through Canelo are crazy. People are underestimating Canelo's skills.
Canelo likely won't win, but he'll make it a hard fight for Toney.
Sounds a lot like James Toney.
I confess I haven't seen a ton of Toney fights...but yeah I more or less agree with you on that as well for Toney, based on the few fights of his I have seen, and the clips of him.
I think it would be a pretty even match up
Incredible fight, haven't even thought of it as a fantasy match but man, that would have been a sight to see. Two elites going at it, with fantastic movement and counters. Both had some great combinations and early 90's Toney's handspeed was something else
A focused Toney is an ATG. Problem with Toney is Toney, only reason he got beat.
Toney is a level above Canelo. Toney beats both Triple G and Canelo at 160.

the bold is basically my issue in every Canelo fight...he does enough good stuff to get a lot of credit, but in general isn't active enough for me in most fights to really dominate as much as some suggest.
Unfortunately if Canelo fought anyone...you would have a contingent of his fans who would see his work and give him the rounds, and if the fights are in Vegas, Canelo likely wins.
Straight up though...I think Toney-Canelo is a great fight though...I would have that one as pretty even...Canelo a bit more polished than Toney but Toney a bit more rugged and probably more active...great great fight.
Sounds a lot like James Toney.
probably be one of those fights id watch over and over because of the skill and violence level like barrera vs marquez, toney v mccallum
I was gonna compare it to Toney-McCallum myself, it would be one of those technical wars.
]Canelo isnt busy enough in my opinion and also Toney was slicker than himself...Middleweight toney was a puncher had some high paced fights
i think it would be competitive like most of canelos fights vs top guys i just think Toney does a few things better and that will make him have the edge
At 24 Toney outboxed Mike McCallum who is known for his skills and bodypunching
