FightCamp 360 and HBO 24/7(RIP) existed to get people to care about these fights for the exact reasons that these YouTubers are being successful.
Combat sports become interesting to people when there is a reason to care about them. Watching a fight where you don't know either guy can be fun, but that's not why people watch sports. Any sport.
In these matchups you've got important themes like anger, revenge, redemption, legacy etc. that are a hallmark of big-time events. The fight is the internalization of everything about these guys and what's that's built up between them, which is why these YouTubers are successful: the viewers are in tune to these guys, know all about them, have their reasons to love or hate them. And that's perfect, because the guys in the ring being loved (DLH, Pacquiao) or hated (Mayweather, Broner) can both lead to a lot of success. While people not knowing who the guy is or have a reason to care about him make him almost certain to fail to become a star (Andrade).
Hardened boxing fans may not care about these fights because the level of competition is too low. That's cool, don't watch. But this is great for the growth of the sport.
Remember those Manny Pacquiao fans who flooded into NSB after watching 24/7 in 2008-2009? It was clear most of them didn't know or care about boxing, they cared about Manny's story. And many of them left after Manny's prime ended, but most of the ones still here became the exact hardened boxing fans that aren't interested in watching low-skilled matchups like KSI-Logan Paul.
This is what it's all about guys; new eyes on a faded sport. Think KSI-Logan Paul was bad for boxing? It wasn't half as bad as Mayweather-Pacquiao was for the sport. How many people that watched KSI-Logan Paul went home disappointed in the quality of the fight vs people that went home disappointed in the quality Mayweather-Pacquiao?
Think about that before crying about how insulting these fights are to you as a fan.
Good post. What a lot of younger fans may not realize is that 24/7 made Floyd Mayweather the richest athlete in the world. 24/7 changed everything.
For sure. Both Fox and DAZN need to find a way to produce some support content as strong as 24/7 if they want to build stars the way they did at HBO. 24/7 did so much for Mayweather, Pacquiao, Cotto, etc's fanbases and careers.
PBC needs to put together a quality 60 minute doc about Wilder and run it on Fox and FS1, already.

It is not hurting the sport because from what I'm seeing guys are taking it serious and showing up in shape and ready to fight
What I think Eddie should do is give them their own Cards with all youtubers instead of mixing them with the Pros because the Youtubers are taking shine away from the Pros and are more known than all of them and it Makes the Pro Boxers look bad
Would you rather it be a dead genre of the past?
Boxing or hip hop will never die... Both just goes thru phases...
But with each phase you have to think whats next...
One thing for sure if the youtube fight is more popular than the main event it makes no sense to not have it last.
I don't know if they're good for the sport or not, but I really enjoyed Jake Paul's fight last night. No idea who he is. Maybe I'm too old. He was entertaining though. I'd watch him again.
I am all for any type of positive publicity that attracts new viewers to the sport, period. Celebs, Youtubers, Firefighters and Police. Doesn't matter to me.
The Jake Paul confrontation with KSI last night was exactly what I wanted to see from Loma and Teofimo after Lopez KTFO Commey.
They know how to hype these fights up better than the pro fighters, no matter how much posters chit on it/complain about it you are all watching it.
Another thing we will see Jake Paul fight KSI next. There won't be any tune-ups etc... The fight is there and they will make the fight no bs marination.
If it is good for boxing I can put up with it. I enjoyed the fights but the Paul fight was silly. Paul's opponent could not fight even a little. I really only enjoy watching very skillful boxers but like you say I don't have to watch these guys. I usually end up watching them anyway because they make such a big deal about their fights.
