What Happened To One-Fight Cards?

I like cards with two are three really good fights on paper for the main TV card. I was there for khan vs Maidana and Ortiz vs PEDerson and i think they were the only televised fights, there were a bunch of under card fights of course, Jessie Vargas i believe was one of them. Yes, that card was amazing! Golden Boy used to put some great cards together before the Haymon business dealings ended! Khan controlled the pace but almost got stopped....I remember yelling at the TV and Lamont also put up a great fight against the mental midget Ortiz. Lol

Yes , HBO was big on that One way , if the rerun fight they would be showing was a good fight , then I’m guessing it would keep someone watching the live broadcast fight and giving it probably a little kick in the azz viewer wise Didn’t enjoy those one fights without the lead in Kind of like getting laid without foreplay lol :lol1: Man, I can't do this today! Well there was probably an untelevised undercard I think some of the WBSS cards on Sky only showed the main fight. I know in the UK, Channel 5 sometimes only showed the main fight, which was usually Hughie Fury. Glad you brought up the UK events! I think I remember HBO only airing Brook/GGG on the telecast, and the same may have been done for AJ/Klitzschko on HBO and SHowtime. I'm also starting to remember....wasn't Spence/Brook a one-fight card on the Showtime telecast?

It was a way to show off a PPV replay anyone had missed the week prior. So a week after Mosley - De La Hoya 2 you’d see Byrd - Oquendo. The replay alone, maybe people skip it so they’d put a live fight in that’s juuuust good enough to make the double feature worth it for people who are on the fence. *edit* I didn’t even explain what happened to them ha. I don’t know. Spaced out today, sheesh. I was mainly speaking of live cards, but I almost forgot about those PPV replays....there haven't been any PPVs for Showtime lately....I believe the last one was what, Wilder/Fury? Maybe? They did used to stick one or two undercards fights on the replay card, which I'm sure was good for ratings for lesser known guys! Aye man....we all get a bit spacey from time to time, lol. No judgement from me!

Why would anyone want a one fight card?? If anything matchroom , who have grown the most over last 5 years , have gone the opposite route. They often have ten fights (obviously first Ones are newer fighters) - with dazn deal these are mostly shown! Not only them though - but social media is being used to promote the later fights by letting people stream for free the earlier fights. So the marketing strategy is going the opposite way if anything Why not? It's not me complaining about it, I'm just curious as to why there haven't been any lately. I mean, I'm not looking forward to one every month, but it would be nice here and there. Some guys just don't impress on the undercard, which may turn some fans away if they're not at a fight party or whatnot. I love what Matchroom and DAZN are doing with their cards....they're televising all of the bouts! In some cases (like the DAZN card this evening), there are 11 televised fights, but it's an app so I'm sure they can air what they want.

Victor Ortiz vs Andre Berto was a one fight card if I remember correctly and Ruslan Provodnikov vs Mike Alvarado was definitely a one fight card too. I'm glad they're gone, what a waste of time staying up for one fight. Both fights didn't disappoint though!

I hated those 1 fight cards on HBO, an hour of BS and then a 3 round fight where Kermit Cintron jumps out of the ring and then wants to fight once he's on the stretcher :lol1: I wanted to erase that fight from my memory so badly....haven't been a Cintron fan since. That guy always had some crazy stuff going on in his fights. Remember his fight with Sergio Martinez when they bumped heads? Lol

I dont know for sure, but I would suspect that since they would have roughly the same production costs, they would want to get 2 or 3 hours of content instead of only 1 hour. But that is just speculation on my part...... I can see that as well, from a network television standpoint. It seems as though most casual fans are tuning into network tv more and more to watch fights, but what's a casual fan's attention span? I'd say two fights are good, because most of them don't really know what they're watching anyway. Lol

I watched that fight, really enjoyed it. I had no idea it was a one fight card. How many other one fight cards have their been in recent times? Same here! I can't even remember the last one-fight card, but I appreciate them as they come. If the main event's a big deal, then I'd like to get straight to the point! If the main event's decent but nothing to call home about, then an undercard fight or two doesn't hurt. I wanna say the last one was Spence/Bundu, but I may be wrong.

They should do that more often. It would really boost ratings for fights that are on after a big football game. The reason they don't do it anymore is because they need to fit as many commercials as they can to pay the main event fighters.

Well there were 6 fights on the under card they just weren't televised. TSN network sucks so bad up here they cut off at least the fight, or two fights before the main event with curling "action" so often times I am watching one fight cards not by choice.

Yeah bingo, that's clearly part of why Fox is buying boxing: they're getting two, sometimes three(PBC) hours of sports content for less than the price of one episode a network drama, whose costs are rising all the time. People will counter "re-runs get the same ratings on network TV", but you can't just run reruns all day in primetime.

1-fight cards are not in the long-term interests of boxing promoters, since they probably want to build up prospects' name recognition on the undercards of major fights
