I came across this kid on the Netflix documentary counterpunch and have followed his career ever since.
It was always apparent he had good skills but he seemed to lack pop early on. He seems to have found his man strength in the last 12 months and is definitely punching harder now.
He was my prospect of the year but has now taken a major step up in class by defeating Jezzrel Corrales last weekend.
Even though he won comfortably, I do feel they maybe rushing him slightly, I think this kid has great potential but talk of fights with Santa Cruz are premature IMO.
Colbert is a good guy, friendly to people, and considering that Corrales is a bit of a puzzle with his awkward style, Chris did very good the other night. Only 12 fights and he made adjustments against a former champ midway through the fight. In 12 fights, very, very few fighters step up to face a former champ, especially one that is not shot or very old. That has to account for something.
He was hit flush several times by Corrales, and looked quite perplexed. Has some degree of talent, but from what I saw he will remain a B-level name. Wastes a lot of energy.
Reminds me somehow of Junior Jones, with less punching power. Same fragility, which will emerge as soon as he's in with some pitbull. Santa Cruz would overwhelm him as of now, and maybe even later.
Dyed hair does not necessarily translate as charisma. Had Corrales believed in himself a little more, he could have beaten the kid. I had bet on a draw, and was disappointed by the Panamanian's lack of output.
kid has no chance...just a flashy wannabe who will never fight anyone worth a damn because hes in fixed fights because hes with the pbc right?!
:pat: :pat:
Why the defense? You're just 24 hr nonstop standing up for PBC. Nobody even bashed the kid.
I like him a lot actually I was impressed with his adjustment vs a very awkward style
Less playing around and showboating in the ring though he was really impressive when he went to High Guard and started walking Corrales down
He looks to be a damn good fighter and will be a tough out. Corrales is a hard guy to look good against but Colbert turned it on late in the fight. Good learning experience fight for him.
He seems to be punching harder but I think that KO of Beltran might have gotten to his head a bit. It was a beauty of a shot but a KO like that could make him believe he's a harder puncher than he actually is.
