Gonzales won or defended world titles in 4 weight classes with barely any misses opponent wise . He fought 9 current or former world champions , only lost to SRR ( prolly won the first fight ) , beat juan estrada and Carlos quadra and beat 6 other current or former champions
Now I definately understand how people are going to call out name value opponents, however there arent too many in those lower weight classes .
But what iam hearing and what I agree with is that floyd didnt fight enuff this decade to be considered ( altho his wins / run is in the top 2 running imo ) canelo has the tainted tacos ( which is a big deal to me or I would award him the honors) . That leaves pac and ward ....I'd say chocolatito had the better decade than pac for sure.....does someone care to break down wards career / best wins so we can compare ??
Not saying chocolatito is a shoe in by any means, just not sure why he isnt getting more mention for FOTD when pac and ward are .....especially considering the hard pick and controversy surrounding the topic this year . Just something that kept coming to my mind as I read debates on this topic ......what do u guys think??
Top 5 but lack of name notoriety in como hurts him same with the last few years. Refused to rematch Estrada so that hurts him as well. Also many feel he lost to Cuadras but I’m a huge Chocolatito fan and he can help his legacy against Kal Yafai.
You only as good
As your last fight and last people remember is him
Getting knocked out by somebody Estrada dominated.
SSR is 1-1 against Estrada. He needs to retire though IMO. His heart hasn’t been in it since his breakup. Since that was reported he’s just looked lost in the ring. Sad.
Not me. I wrote him off after the Horn fight. I thought he won, but like I said, he couldn't fight over here anymore, he left TR...Wasn't he his own promoter for the Matthysse fight?
Foty I said bro haha
There we go , that's what iam saying right there 110% but people are just reading into me apparently saying choco deserves the honours which is not what I said . And u are correct it was 4 classes he had 1 defence at 105 in 2010 . Good catch I was going off the top of my head . And the finances is really the big issue with the little guys it's a shame really there are great fights and fighters
Completely agreed mate. A lot of people under value Gonzalez because they are largely uneducated on his career prior to his televised fights on HBO.
He was unquestionably one of the very best fighters in the world for around 7/8 years. He beat good fighters in every weight class also. Nilda and Takayama at 105, Estrada at 108, Yaegashi and Viloria at 112, and Cuadras at 115. He definitely deserves an honourable mention.

Very true . Who would have thought . Manny was a serious contender for foty .

Had Manny ended it with the Horn fight or Matthysse fight, nobody would be talking FOTD though. I thought he was finished, and he wasn't able to even fight in the States. Wasn't the Matthysse fight in Kuala Lumpur or something like that?
I'm not a promotion groupie like a lot of the people on here, but PBC really helped Pac in getting him back on track

Fair statement but with mannys inactive last few years their inactivity isnt that far off , however chocolito didnt come back with avengance and beat a legit world title holder last year haha so I get that .

I read this on the Boxing Monthly website last week:
=====
In the first of a new series discussing who was the greatest boxer of the last decade, Lee Gormley makes the case for Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez...
Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez entered the past decade as a reigning world champion at minimumweight and, after almost 10 years of dominance in the lower divisions, he finished it as a four-weight king.
Floyd Mayweather seemingly leads the way in the majority of major organisation’s 'Fighter of the decade' ballots and his wins over rivals Manny Pacquiao and Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez were impressive in the first half of the 2010s, albeit typically timed to perfection and made on his own terms.
No, such esteemed recognition is more deserving for a pugilist who forged out an incredible career across the entirety of that period of time; one who took on all comers at the right stage, regardless of any personal disadvantages.
That fighter is ‘Chocolatito’, whose name is criminally absent from several high-profile lists across America, where he was an integral figure in building the popularity and overall profile of the sport’s lower weight divisions; despite being past his best and beyond his comfortable weight limit.
In the view of this writer, no other prize-fighter matched what Gonzalez achieved this past decade, no matter what criteria is used. The little Nicaraguan genius was as much about quality as he was quantity with his record, while his in-ring abilities were simply magnificent and - at the height of his powers - on another level to great rivals.
Across the decade he amassed 23 victories, including 13 championship wins and 19 knockouts, was the first fighter to win world titles in boxing’s four lowest weights successively and the first from his nation to reign in four classes. That latter feat saw him eclipse his mentor Alexis Arguello.
During the ten years he retained his minimumweight title, moved up to reign at light-flyweight, jumped further to dominate at flyweight then pushed beyond his physical boundaries to historically triumph at super-flyweight too.
All of this wasn’t accomplished against lesser opponents either, with conquered foes including Katsunari Takayama, Juan Francisco Estrada, Akira Yaegashi, Edgar Sosa, Brian Viloria, McWilliams Arroyo and Carlos Cuadras. He was also unfortunate not to earn a decision over the Thai powerhouse Srisaket Sor Rungvisai in their initial meeting, which led to his maiden career setback after 47 bouts.
Unlike others in the running for the Fighter of the Decade honour, ‘Chocolatito’ has no asterisks beside any of his successes, while he always provided action when he climbed through the ring ropes. Entertainment might be overlooked factor when it comes to making such picks as well and Gonzalez was involved in mostly thrilling battles, including a Fight of the Decade contender against Rungvisai in 2017.
Simply put, Gonzalez has a better resume over the entire past decade than any one else in contention.
Good article , thanks for that share. I agree with that article. It speaks facts. Whatever weight that happened at who else is doing that kind of stuff the last decade ?? The guy should have atleast been mentioned in the talks, that's what outrages me . I dont think hes FOTD. But he deserves a mention if pac and ward do .

Although I wouldn't have him as FOTD, he should be in any discussions for sure. He was a fantastic fighter.
A lot of the guys he gets hate from also seem to be people who say they don't follow the lower weights. There was a video of this kind the other day, I think it was Stephen Edwards who was schooling someone who was dismissing Gonzalez.
I think him fighting at a lower weight, as well as being past best by the time his fights were being aired on HBO, turned some people away from his career somewhat.
Had he beaten SRR he probably has a serious case considering Roman Gonzalez is an ATG.
Everyone knows he beat him the first tho. That "Loss" rattled him.
Yea i hate how people used those losses to discredit him.
Firstly he arguably won the first fight
2nd he got knocked out in a war vs a bigger guy in a higher division
Im curious about him mentally, does he still have his champion mentality left
Ya man , physically aswell hes looked a bit questionable ( altho not vs anyone worth a mention ) and his injuries . But mentally iam not sure . Yafai may be fighting a shell .
Fair enuff I guess we will see more of what he has left in this yafai fight if hes not completely shot this should be a winnable fight for him.

His resume is trash.
As a #1 P4P fighter, placed there forcefully by writers who were in love with the lower weights, he fought some dude with a 29-29 record, while being hailed as the #1 fighter after Floyd retired. He goes on to fight a couple of dudes who used to be good, Sosa and Viloria. His cherrypicking parade finally comes to an end with Rungvisai, some unknown guy who had a resume full of nothing and was outfought and outworked by him and then KTFO.
He beat like 3 good fighters all decade.
He shouldn’t even be in the top 10 FOTD.
Exactly. He just hasn't been active enough to make the fans forget. "What have you done for me lately?" is how boxing operates. Let's see how Gonzalez performs against Yafai.
100% too bad to yafai fight didnt come together before 2020 like it was talked about . That could have been huge for him in this conversation .....but it didnt haha
But Pac came back and made up for it.
Roman haven't really done enough to rinse that bad taste away.
Fair enuff I guess we will see more of what he has left in this yafai fight if hes not completely shot this should be a winnable fight for him.
Yea its like Donaire he had enough time overshadow his brutal losses.
But Roman, that KO loss too fresh in everyone's head. To the point people forget he had picked up Ws after

It was actually 4 weight classes. Pretty sure he made at least one defence of his 105 lb title this decade.
He shouldn’t win FOTD, but he should be an honourable mention.
There were a few guys he could have fought, he damn sure didn’t duck anyone but fights with Nietes, Ioka, Segura, Joyi, Inoue etc could have happened and some definitely should have. Unfortunately due to lack of finances, we often don’t see the best matchups in the lower weights.
