What does NSB think of Banks as a trainer?
I was not impressed in the least. Let's look at a few categories, I'm comparing him to how he was under Sanchez.. not in absolutes.
-Conditoning = C. Looked far worse than G ever looked under Sanchez. It's possible that he was sick and it played a huge role in it, but we'll never know.
-Power = D. One of the most surprising things in this fight is how many times G landed cleanly and Sergiy didn't even buckle. Usually with that amount of clear punches landed, the guy would be in deep trouble. Where did the power go?
-Technique = C-. I didn't see many stylistic changes in this version of G from previously. He tried to move his head in the first 2 rounds, but quickly abandoned it. He stopped jabbing which was very surprising. Or rather, he got outjabbed by shorter stockier fighter. He settled in and his defense got better in 2nd half, but he was still incapable of getting out of the way of the flurries. He boxed well off the backfoot like he did in 2nd Canelo fight, but was turned around a lot more. He didn't control the ring well, at all.
Adjustments = F. Golovkin didn't make many adjustments under Sanchez, but he didn't need to. He was able to force others fight his fight. He made adjustments during 2nd Canelo fight to go off the back foot, but during last 3-4 rounds he was back to being the same aggressor. During this fight, Banks contributed absolutely nothing. His advice in the corner was 'jab more', and NOTHING else. Dude was talking about how G was afraid to pull the trigger (hello Wlad vs. Fury) and how he needs to jab. Really?
Motivation = B-. Sanchez was able to keep his guy pumped and give solid advice in the corner. Banks was just slow, methodical, and steadfast. It's a great quality, but he needed to do a little more to keep his guy in it. Golovkin also said several times that he lost focus. What/how/why could that ever happen? Weird to hear.

Well power jumps out for me. Jacobs had aapproximately an 80% knockout ratio about the time of his fight and he only managed to knock Derev down in the first round and win a split decision. So is it surprising Golovkin couldn't knock him out. No..
His technique was poor that's for sure.
Corner advice poor. Don't know didn't pay attention to the corner.
If he was sick it would explain quite a bit.
People thought Golovkin at age 37 would just walk through this guy after he changed his trainer I didn't see that happening before the fight.
Banks says he is only going to fine tune him but he appears to want to make a lot of changes at once.
fighters who switch trainers late in their career only do it to place blame elsewhere, their style will not change as they are who they already are.

That's ridiculous. Fighters change trainers for all sorts of reasons. Financial, difference in philosophies, trying to recapture their glory days boredom etc.
You can't teach an old dog new tricks. GGG has regressed - Abel sucks as a tactician but at least he is one of the best conditioning trainers in all of boxing.
GGG ain't slick and he never will be. He should focus on power and conditioning - Banks will be his ruin, he's delusional. Abel is imo the best trainer GGG could have - he just needs someone else telling him what to do in the ring.
I don't like how Banks's comments about Chenko and the fight. I dunno if he was asked specifically about Chenko's performance or if he brought it up himself but to me it sounded like (A) Banks doesn't give a **** and isn't invested in GGG 100% or (B) Banks is incredibly naive to think public comments like this won't bite him in the ass and tense up his and GGG's work relationship.
Manny used to be able to light a fire in his fighters and so far we haven't seen Banks do that with GGG or Wlad
Just like Andre Ward for example, didn't have the physical abilities of some of the past greats but he took some stuff out of Mayweather and B-Hop's book, he knew how to position himself in close, left shoulder under his opponent's chin whilst tying up their left arm and working short uppercuts to the mid section, that stuff accumulates. We look at these punches and think nothing of them because we're so used to reacting to hard punches and half the time commentators get it wrong because that stuff gets blocked a lot and so the one tiring is the guy throwing the shot.
Those short shots inside that go unnoticed, fighters need to develop that. By the way, Duran was definitely the master at that and greatest inside operator I've ever seen. Add Pernell Whitaker on to that list, for as great of a boxer he was he was also an exceptional inside fighter.
I was surprised at how slick Duran was in sum of his fights. He could really slip punches in that pocket at his best. He moved up so high in weight, and had that smooth physique, u don’t really expect it. I love Trinidad but when his plan A didn’t work his plan B is to refer to plan A. That’s what I see in GGG, it worked for a long time, but now the cost is much higher. I just imagine Papa Trinidad in GGGs corner “Good. Just keep doing what ur doing but now do it better.”
Cant teach him nothing? Maybe, but at least give him some useful advice, the dude didnt even tried to do it.
Didnt like it. And I dont see GGG changing him. 2 or 3 more wars and thats it guys.
I really dislike Banks as his trainer.
All this nonsense about fighting till he's 65 and fighting Canelo at a very old age.
I mean WTF is he talking about.
The guy is a bit brain damaged imho.
GGG needs to get rid of him ASAP.
Can't teach a old dog new tricks
GGG is what he is, it is laughable to try and change him and his style at 37 years old and this far in his career. Not a fan of Abel Sanchez, I think he is extremely overrated as a trainer BUT GGG looked better with him. Nothing against Johnathan Banks, very good trainer being a former fighter himself and working with and under the Great Emmanuel Steward. However, he is getting at 37 year old coming off of tough fights vs Jacobs and twice vs Canelo.
Trainers are just that TRAINERS, not Miracle Workers!
He's expecting too much. List of things he wants to accomplish.
1. Always fight going forward.
2. Throw combinations.
3. Increase your frequency of jabs.
4. Bob and weave and be conscious of your defense.
5 increase your pace and pressure.
I don't know if Golovkin was expected to do all these things but the man is 37. Increasing the pace could backfire if his legs are gone and as far as the others on the list old habits die hard. These things are great but trying to do all of them against a dangerous opponent like Derev didn't work. Plus Golovkin was apparently sick. I thought he lost that fight if you look at it over all. Fights are won by rounds and I had him losing by rounds won also. Some vere very close so.....
He should just concentrate on one or two things for now. Body work and his jabs.
I like what Banks is trying to accomplish but take baby steps.
I think Banks stinks and is a stupid person and a lousy trainer and GGG should get a new better trainer. Banks seemed to blame GGG for not doing better by following his instructions. Worst yet he goes public praising the hell out of Dervy and trashing his own boxer. He said the score should have been closer and damn near said he thought Dervy won. It's OK for him to think that but he should keep those thoughts to himself. A good trainer supports his boxer and never goes public saying he thinks his boxer lost or came close to losing. He always says his boxer did well and deserved the win by the amount he won or more even if he doesn't really believe it. I have never heard a trainer praise the other boxer so much and say his fighter fought poorly and should not have won by the amount he did and maybe even should have lost. Never. GGG should fires this guy now. He doesn't need to pay a trainer to tell the world he is no good and just lost a fight he won.
I was stunned at Banks' comments. He praised Dervy more when his own guy made it hell for Dervy too. Banks did nothing during the fight. He needs to go. Accurate analysis of technique, power and adjustments. Banks adds nothing and added nothing.

A. I learn that GGG can fight till 75 years old.
B. I also learn that GGG has some untapped abilities waiting to be unearth.
C. And recently GGG is to increase his offensive output while maximizing defense. This impregnable defense was demonstrated with banks' envisioning a Gatti-Ward scenario against Derevyanchenko.
Do this all make any sense? .. The answer is in GGG's cheapness.
This is what GGG wanted when he didn't want Sanchez because he was too expensive. There he have it, a cheap trainer with a bridge to sell. Banks do come in real cheap and his services is bundled with his nonsense and brain damage too.
Is that why all the others guys left Sanchez before Golovkin did?

he wasn't cutting off the ring as usual, and his jab wasn't as sharp... he was always good but never great imo, but hes worn out, all those armature fights plus pro career, hes older... it happens
I don't see much change but I do hear better corner work. Problem is, it's still not the solution for Golovkin. Calling for more defense and more output (literally what he asked for) doesn't mean a whole lot. If it were that easy, everyone would just do more of both.
Duran also got knocked the **** out many time something which ggg has yet to do at even 37.
Yeah that's one trait he shouldn't emulate. He also blew up in weight between fights partied and generally did whatever he without regard for his health.
