first off, jack reiss did a great job reffing last saturday i think
kenny bayless is a great ref too no doubt but i think his style of refereeing puts a fighter whose specialty is inside fighting at a disadvantage given he is known to break a clinch very quickly...now , it wouldn't matter much if porter was fighting scrubs like paulie :439:.....
i checked porter's fights with quality fighters and i think kenny was never the ref in any of them ( i could be wrong coz i did not check all of em) remember, team floyd slammed tony weeks in the first maidana fight and requested kenny bayless for the rematch and it made a huge difference...
i don't exactly know how they pick refs for a fight but obviously floyd was able to pull some strings to put kenny in there and i think future porter opponents should try to do the same and porter should also try to not have kenny as the ref....or do they already know this?..
just curious what you all think
In a fight like that...the refs who are able to just use verbal warnings to keep the action flowing and as clean as possible will help the fight build and build....some might even step in to unhook arms during inside action to keep it continuous.
The styles of the fighters have to matchup too - both those guys know their way around on the inside and they knew it was a dogfight so there no time to worry about potential fouls when another 2-3 shots are incoming
As far as Bayless in that situation, I definitely get what you mean about his style (especially with Floyd) - but I don't think he'd really be interested in trying to stepping between that scrap!
Refs can make a difference. It seems the more powerful the fighter, the more they can dictate who will or won't referee.
Some refs are known for letting the fighters go, and also not stopping a fight early. I think Carlos Padilla was one of those.
Others were known to be intrusive. Oddly Richard Steele was both. He'd keep shouting 'Punch and get out' but he'd break fighters, stop fights early. Joey Curtis was booed in the ring every time he was introduced because he stopped a fight way too early, and never lived it down.
Then you have the guys who never had a chance to live something down -- Mitch Halpern who seemed like a very good referee, and Richard Green. Some say their suicides were over guilt at not stopping a fight fast enough.
Mills Lane seemed like a good referee, as was Frank Cappucino, but sometimes it's the fighters who can make a ref look bad, by not following instructions, daring a ref to take a point, or engaging in a lot of semi-legal holding. Ali was always holding behind the head and a ref wouldn't do much about it.
Every ref is bound to have a fight that is controversial. Jack's "long count" on Tyson Fury after Wilder decked him, was questionable, but he's put together so many good fights (many where he simply stayed far away and was invisible) that he's still regarded as one of the best today.
PS, a ref shouldn't try to become famous with a catch-phrase. That goes for Joe "I'm Firm But I'm Fair" Cortez. It was a bit weird when Mills Lane autographed a photo for me and added "Let's Get It On!"
I think last Saturday a referee like Bayless would have benefited Porter not Spence. It was Spence throwing most of the low blows and it was Spence more than Porter leading with his head.
I thought Reiss could have done a better job early in the fight. He talked to Spence but it didn’t look like he warned him. Overall though, he did a good job so far as I could tell.
Good call
That chit started in the mid rounds , both were warned
Few rounds later is when Spence figured out that he could lean on Porter , play that game , bully the bully , so to say
That imo took a lot out of Porter
Pretty impressive though how Porter in the earlier rounds would just spin Spence around like a rag ( footwork )

hmmm interesting but wasn't porter winning the inside game that kenny would've stalled?..i did see a couple of low blows by spence , yes
i thought jack reiss did....not really sure about his resume but i think he did great last saturday
there's a couple of fights where i think tony weeks was inconsistent tho so i could understand team floyd for their concerns.....mathysse vs garcia and floyd vs maidana were conducted by 1 ref but 2 different styles...maybe weeks really hates floyd haha
He’s not the first and won’t be the last person to hate Floyd
All in all what I can say is yeah Reiss did do ok , he didn’t make it about him so that’s always a plus with a ref
Not sure why he didn’t penalize both of them for low blows especially after warning both
Pretty sure Porter is still feeling it today lol

Jack Reiss was alright
But found that he wouldn’t let them fight out of a clinch
Imo , a ref should always give the fighters a few seconds before intervening
See if they’ll fight out of it or hug it out
I can’t recall , maybe you can but didn’t Reiss have a couple of stains on his resume
I can’t recall the fight , but one in particular he looked real shady

Yes reffing styles make a huge difference. This is why alot of the classic fights are because of a lax ref who allows the fights to happen.
it does, doesn't it?
i think the reffing that involves an inside fighter in duran vs leonard was excellent, a perfect blue print imo
