Well, we've touched upon this subject a number of times, but is it really true or is it the media just pushing one perspective ?
Since I've been a part of NSB, I've grown to realize that many men surpass my general knowledge of boxing and boxing history.
Still, I am unable to find peers in everyday life that are aware of contenders, prospects, or even many title fights that are coming up.
Is it where I live ? (doubt it) Is it just the USA ?
And if boxing really is "dead" in the US, does the article properly explain why, and will it change in either direction ?
At any rate, I'm thankful for this forum discussion, despite some of its downfalls.
Peace.:headbang:
Honestly I have read only the first four posts..at least so far.
Most likely I will be the most qualified here to talk about this topic.
Boxing is and ISN'T "dead".
Let's take a look.
Lets look back. Lets look at now.
Back....to 1971. Why '71? Of course that's easy analysis.
Ali-Frazier 1. "The" Fight of the Century.
Was boxing dead then? Well....it was not "well". But..that was *special fight. It was (indeed) a CROSSOVER ATTRACTION.
Is Boxing dead in 2019? According to any "crossover index" boxing is dormant if not dead.
The world population has MORE THAN DOUBLED since '71. The crossover interest hardly existed at all in '71. But...Ali-Frazier 1 (as we are saying) was a special fight.
Now....we'll find still the "nitch interest". Die hards like myself seak out sites like this one. But, even a fight as "nifty" as Fury-Wilder gonna be utterly ignored by vast majority of the "GENERAL media".
In one word..it's the General media representing "the cross over".
Now....I'm only talking FIELD STUFF so far.
"Specilization" only cure known. That will be to FIX PROBLEMS. What are Boxing's problems modern day? There's only three reoccurring that I KNOW CAN-BE SOLVED. That...don't yet have proper pressure on it. Judgeing fights is "problem" at times but......I don't count it. It is a rather rarity and has "constant presure" on it already.
-we cont this conversation- Anyone here know anything?
By the way.....I'll "hold my own" as History buff too. Ah....I KNOW their many lot greater than I am on that but....."learning" recent years true buffs a hard one to find too.
Jokes on this mfer. Newspapers are dead.
Except the article is pretty spot on about boxing in AMERICA, notice how he made an emphasis to say America and not globally. He torched Canelo pretty badly thou LOL.
I actually did join a baseball forum recently. Haha. Bu that's the first time I ever have, which maybe is a bad sign. It's just been so blah in the boxing world for a while. I mean, hell, the only fights worth talking about this year are Ruiz-Joshua and Pac-Thurman and if those fights had gone like most assumed, this would be the dullest year in a while. It's been saved by upsets but those fights were intended not to be. I mean, Pac-Thurman was kind of close going in but very few thought Ruiz would beat Joshua. So the matchmaking just isn't cutting it. However, I will say that Beterbiev-Gvozdyk should be excellent. I think it will be a barnburner and somebody's getting KO'd in a unification. Now that's what sells tickets and keeps us coming back for more. Spence-Porter is okay but it's not great. Most are expecting Spence to beat Porter and that it won't be that hard. Monster-Donaire would be much more interesting if Donaire was five years younger but I don't think most are giving him a chance. Again, just not very exciting. Guys today make a lot for giving little while guys of the past gave all and made little. Can't we find a happy medium? Haha. I don't know, man. I think boxing shoots itself in the foot more than most sports. In the end, two guys hitting each other will never die out but damn, this isn't exactly a golden era. More like an aluminum era- wrap up another showcase BS fight in aluminum foil and throw it on the grill. It'll get done but there won't be much flavor.
I like the food analogy, relatable to all and accurate. To add to that we are usually just given bread as undercards. I’d love to see cards again where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. See sum of the champs at the rarely publicized lighter weights get on sum undercards against #1 contenders. It would be a nice bone to true fans. I like seeing the young prospects but they’re usually against carefully matched opposition.
"Boxing can-but won't- provide that."
Sadly, I think he's right.
The average American has no idea who the players are or what's going on. All this hate about "casual" fans on here has shown the price that is paid. No one cares. I'm a casual fan of a lot of sports and a big reason I am now is because of boxing's sagging structure that doesn't have the best fight the best. In other sports, the best have to take on the best. They don't have a choice. That's how it should be. I know boxing is different, but at the end of the day as a fan, why should I care? It's like I'm supposed to be patient and prop up the sport that is supposed to entertain me? Hell, I can just go watch a baseball or basketball or hockey game. Why even bother? Boxing has made some stupid deicsion and then Saudi Arabia one is about as dumb as you can get. AJ and Ruiz will not build their names over there. Very stupid. And like he says, there are very few fights to look forward to. I'm glad Spence and Porter are fighting but who expects Porter to win? We need those 50/50 fights. Without them, boxing may not die but it sure takes a nap and induces us into one...until we find othr sports to watch. I've even been watching some UFC lately. I used to never do that, but well, what else is going on?
Great post, my friend.
Are u a member of a baseball, hockey, basketball forum though? I hear ya. I think boxing doesn’t do itself any favours. It milks the loyal fans while always trying to cater to the casuals. I’m just glad in today’s cancel culture it’s not being attacked. It’s a truly international sport and that helps. I know I’d rather even talk boxing than watch a lot of sports. “Dead” is just a typical buzzword to grab attention. U only write an article claiming a sport is dead knowing it isn’t cause ur hoping to stir controversy. I mean we’re talking about it on here. Money drives narratives, until the top boxers don’t earn giant purses even compared to other sports stars it will be far from dead.

I say B.S! I attended the Murphy's boxing card in Massachusetts yesterday and it was a large and excited crowd. I attend many cards from different promoters and generally the crowds are large. Will boxing ever be as popular as MLB or the NFL? No but that was never the case. What does hurt the sport is that promoters need to do a better job of working together. The best fighters need to fight each other. Period! Spence/Crawford, Ramirez/Prograis, Wilder/Ruiz, etc!
The transition from Floyd to nothingness has been hard too. Floyd was the GOAT entertainer in boxing...commercials, tv shows, music production, celebrity friends, controversial in media, and a damn good fighter.
The next best thing is...nothing. Canelo fights are great, but they've lost their luster since switching to DAZN. There are no other stars tbh
Floyd is the one who killed boxing with his antics. But anyway, the only important thing man has done in the last 70 years is dead, and that my friend, is Rock music. Everything else is nothing!
Not Completely WRONG! Boxing is Dead to the Mainstream Absolutely! It is not a topic of conversation at all by the Average person, it rarely comes up. In fact it only comes up for big upsets like Andy Ruiz or if Mayweather is attached to it. Canelo gets some attention from Casuals but not anything close to the level of how it was for Pacquiao and Mayweather
This Divide among fans, Networks/Apps and Promoters which is indeed Politics, is no question burying the sport even further. Fighters are Scattered around on different networks and platforms. The Casual Sports fans is not chasing down a sport they're not even really a fan of nor are they going to spend money on it. So again I do think this sport needs to be on for FREE like on Fox or even ESPN (which automatically comes with Basic Cable Packages). In American it is not popular enough to make people pay monthly for a APP to consume it
In the US, boxing as a major sport, comparable to baseball, basketball, hockey, and football has been dead for a while. It'a a niche sport similiar to MMA and WWE.
Years ago, when the baseball and football seasons were shorter and there wasn't a lot of competition from other sports, boxing was huge. It was made for TV, with it's 3 minute rounds and time for a commercial break.
Now, competition from other sports is fierce and boxing, with it's lack of any central authority, is an example of capitalism gone wild. Who, but the most hardcore fan, came name the 70+ champions the alphabets have come up with.
Boxing will never die though. It's been with us since there were only 3 men on eath. Two of them got into a fight and the third one cheered.:D
What is the point in this thread? If boxing is dead to some people then so what. YOU being a supporter of boxing is your choice, seriously what is going on here? 'Time and time again I continually keep seeing these threads, and I think they are completely pointless. Boxing is boxing, it is a individual sport where the popularity spikes and dips depending on which characters are in the game. 'NFL, NBA, SOCCER these sports are brands which sell themselves, there is not much pressure on the actual athletes to be interesting 'That tribal, group think mentality of team-sports fans ensures that teams will always have followers' The Athletes are just slaves to the teams.
I have stated this before on this site? Boxing and most of all the original Olympic sports will out live, the New age civilized sports which are predominately classed as mainstream. One of the major reasons why Boxing and certain Olympic Sports are not the biggest sports in the world anymore, is down to how society has culturally changed 'We live in a society now where the herd mentality, is more evident and contagious then ever' 'We live in a society where people just want to be liked, so easiest way to achieve this is to pretend to like whatever is popular'.
Team sports are save, because you are in a team. There are certain schools out there that in certain environments, individual sports are banned 'In some primary schools, there are no longer sports days' usually these are sports events where kids are competing against each other individually in various athletic events.
Bringing this all back to boxing, it is ancient sport. Boxing is a archaic/violent sport 'It is not a civilized sport, and it never will be'. But we are living in a society where humans are aspiring to progress in the other direction. All of these social changes have affected the popularity of boxing, the world has changed and people don't have to fight anymore 'The so called mainstream sports in their embryonic stage where historically classed as leisure activities' For example Soccer was just a leisure activity, where as boxing was a risky job that could ether get you killed, earn you a living, and sit you up among royalty.
Boxing is not going to die out, it will always be around in some form or another because it is fundamental primal sport. 'If we where living right now, in a post apocalyptic world the only things that would really matter are 'Can you fight, and how fast can you run'.
If people want to write meaningless articles about boxing dying out, let them do it.
I used to watch boxing with my brothers and some friends,
now I'm the only one watching.
At work, not even one out of probably a hundred males
don't give a crap about the sport.
That's how unpopular it has become.
"3 years ago I predicted boxing was dead"
Says some guy after the last 100 guys who said it was dead.
I think there is a cottage industry of boxing is dead articles. It's a lazy topic that you'd hear on sports radio during a holiday weekend of no sports- like "should Pete Rose be in the baseball hall of fame?" or "name your 3 greatest bball players of all time."
No evidence was presented, no numbers, nothing that I saw...just an anecdotal article using the attendance at press conference on a Wednesday afternoon as evidence that boxing is dead. I mean there is probably more evidence that journalism is dead from that article than boxing. Maybe there is case to be made, wasn't done there.
