There's a belt for the Lineal champ, correct? Why hasn't Tyson Fury walked out with that belt in recent fights? Or did I completely miss that?
It's kinda odd for him to to be considered the lineal champ after he was out for 2 years for his issues, come back, and somehow is still the 'man'. I understand he is still undefeated but just weird to come back and claim it.
This is not an attempt to bash him or anything, I'm just genuinely curious. Second part of this post is just my opinion. First part is more what I'm wanting to know about
I barely noticed the response for this thread today! Thanks for those responses, facts, opinions etc. I'll probably go through them after Muay Thai training :)
That's not true. Fury remains the Lineal champion and Ring Magazine recognise him as exactly that.
Not really true, they’re two different things
The lineal champ is nothing official, just a status when you’re the man who beat the man. That’s all it means.
Ring magazine does not determine anything, it’s just their own personal ratings and opinion. Being the Ring magazine champ really is not anything different to being a BoxRec champ in theory, it’s just it has more value and credibility historically. It’s just holding a belt to say you’re rated number 1 by a magazine.
Bingo.
And if it was vacated when Lennox retired, why was it not vacated when Tyson retired? Because he came back? If Lennox announced a charity comeback fight would it be for the lineal title? Calling Tyson the lineal champ is absurd.
By that logic, the lineal title ended with Gene Tunney over 100 years ago and could never be re-established after his retirement.
Here's the truth:
When a lineal fighter retires the lineage is re-established again by the no.1 and no.2 ranked fighters facing one another and that happened when Vitali beat Corrie Sanders and when Wladimir beat Pulev.
Fury became lineal when he beat Wladimir and has not lost since and didn't retire.
The end.

there is no lineal champ belt
Lennox Lewis was the man and nobody beat him so how did Klitschko become the man without beating the man?

No, there's no official belt for the lineal title but at one time if you had 'The Ring' belt, you were considered the true champ of the division.
Yes he is, he's the man who beat the man.
The lineage has been broken so many times it's pointless. Lennox Lewis was the man and nobody beat him so how did Klitschko become the man without beating the man?

... nope... the Ring HW champ position is vacant right now... Fury is ranked as #1, but not as "champ"... :)

I don’t think there is an actual physical belt for it. I know ring magazine has one but not sure if that belt is given to the lineal or undisputed champion of a weight class.
It is just a mythical title not a real world title. Ring magazine may have lineal title belts but those belts have no real value or bring in even a dime. You can't just do nothing for years and stay even mythical or Ring magazine lineal champ, Fury won the lineal title by beating consensus lineal champ Wlad and rightfully so. Ring recognized him as lineal champ back then. Then Fury retired from boxing for personal problem for almost 3 years and Ring no longer recognized him as lineal champion. They have that title vacant. They will crown a lineal champion only when one man holds all the belts. That could happen if Wilder fights the winner of the AJ-Ruiz fight. Until Fury wins a world title he is no longer in the running for the lineal heavyweight title.
