TRY to put your love/hate for the guy aside for a sec. Assuming they did the normal they did the normal thing and gave themselves the ability to get out of the contract, would you back out of the Canelo deal if you were working at DAZN and trying to get to profitable?
DAZN overpaid Canelo because they wanted to fast-track their way into the streaming biz. There's a lot of speculation that the Jacobs event failed to bring in major subs, and now the guy doesn't want to fight GG (which was why they brought GG onboard) and there's talks about guys like Munguia. DAZN can't be happy.
I don't have a real opinion as I don't know enough about their metrics. Curious to hear what people here would do though.

I don’t think you consider dropping him at this point.
I think you have to face the realization that if you want Americans to buy Dazn you need to have the biggest draw fight quality American opponents.
I don’t think the us audience wants to see any more fights with British fighters they don’t know. I also don’t think us fans want to see cw fights with guys they think are washed up.
You keep Canelo and use your vast resources to make fights with Americans .
I expected a few more posts like these, but I think that's because I do all the purchasing for my biz so my mind is constantly thinking about profit. I don't see how they can make profit paying him 32 million to fight guys who have no value.
But, I also see the "he's all they have" argument. That's valid. But, if he's all they have and they can't make profit on him, then they don't have a business. His worth is not unlimited. That's why no one else was willing to pay that money.
Anyhow, I think it's just an interesting subject. There's no right answers.
Same here, the bottom line and the spread is what its about. Burn rate being cool and all when your investors have deep pockets but you can't burn forever. It's an issue that plagues a ton of businesses especially tech. You can't rely on one product to have longevity, yeah you can make a ton of cash on it but the odds are against it. DAZN can't be the Canelo network either, they have to be known as the go-to place for fights, not just his fights. I think they were trying to achieve that reputation of the go to place but that 32 million can go far being spread out intelligently. In the end it'll come down to how long before Oscar fks this situation up anyway.
It depends on how the contract is set up. If they could get out of it then I think they should. It was an 11 fight deal for 365 million and he has nine fights left. I don't think he will be fighting for 9 more fights. He could lose to a number of top fighters and then the magic and super stardom and franchise championship are gone.
Money is not everything brah. Look at the Charlo twins. They've been given lucrative offers by DAZN and GBP, but they chose to stay home sweet home with their uncle Al. Tell me why?
I assure you Canelo couldn't care less about getting dropped by any promotional company at this stage of his career. He probably wishes he could get out of his contract just to avoid getting stalked by this GGG guy. Like he said, "There's nothing in my contract that binds me to the Golovkin trilogy." Which is understandable because who would have thought GGG would sign with DAZN? Golovkin disappeared for a year without a trace and was given offers by competing companies.
Some of you guys act genuinely stupid. No one else was willing to pay Canelo anything like this and there's a reason the amount shocked the industry and made headlines. Canelo thanks god every night that DAZN was willing to pay him such crazy money.
I'm not saying he hasn't earned it. If someone is willing to pay it, then he's earned it. But, Canelo phags would have you believing it's privilege to pay him money. IDK why people have such a hard time with the concept that he's only drawing so many subs and there's a strong chance they might lose money on him. DAZN has been pretty fast and loose with their money thus far.

They are getting return from the money they gave Canelo.
The bad investment is going to turn out to be Golovkin. They are paying him like a PPV star...on a service that doesn't do PPV...with no big buzz or subscriber increases to show for it.
At 32 million per fight? From a business point of view.....Yes. Do one off with guys in the sport who should be fighting each other and aren't. Tell me people here wouldn't sign up to watch Spence vs Crawford. Make each fighter and their promoter a ten million dollar offer and take that ten and spend 3 million of it on 5 barn burner fights between them lower weight dudes with huge motors.
Honestly, I don't partake in the money talk in boxing but For ten million clean Spence and Crawford would fight each other in a porta potty.
Yeah Canelo is the biggest draw in the sport but that's a whole lot of money on one guy hoping life, health, etc don't bring him down. I'd rather be known for putting on good fights that nobody else can make rather than the guy who controls Canelo's career. One man can't be bigger than your network, otherwise...you fkd up.
I’d do the math. If Canelo won’t do the fights subscribers want to see what choice would I have but to terminate? Of course, without seeing the contract I don’t know my options or Canelo’s obligations.

No way Canelo signed a contract that lets DAZN dictate who he fights. They needed him more than he needed them.
He does have incentives based on how many subs his fights bring in.
The Cash Cow fights who he wants when he wants.

Ok but if they drop Canelo they should drop GGG as well because they're paying him $100 because they want him to fight Canelo. So without Canelo, GGG is useless to them. And he's not even bringing subs like Canelo
I just finished writing a reply to Pandas that kinda mirrors your second point. Having a lot of money in boxing means nothing. The boxing graveyard is littered with people who threw good money after bad trying to spend their way to success. Boxing is so attractive from the outside looking in. Sign the biggest star. Sign his counterpart to fight him. Align yourself with the promoter of the top HW and offer his counterpart big money to join. Listen to that promoter tell you he's going to get you this big list of guys who aren't tied to a promotional company if you give him the money.
But what DAZN didn't know, and Hearn didn't know about America, it's not about how much money you have. It's about knowing the intricate politics of boxing. If you don't understand the politics of boxing you're wasting money. WE knew it would be a hassle making Canelo/GGG III because of their history of bad blood. And after the second fight Canelo said that chapter was closed. He went to DAZN to chart his own course for the rest of his career. Now here comes GGG following him and they're trying to make him fight GGG again when that chapter is closed for Canelo.
The only way GG made sense, at that price, was to get a big fight for Canelo. I think they must be pulling their hair out right now.
Interesting, but not surprised DAZN is making moves with more popular sports in any way they can right now.
As a non-major sports guy is this redzone sh^t something that attracts fans or is it just a novelty thing &/or for people who don't got 3 hrs to spend watching the whole game? Or basically is this something that could pull in fans or is it just filler for now til they do acquire full games as I suspect it is?
It could become handy as time goes on, they need to start filling up more sports though. Theyve got multi-screen coming. So for example, you could be watching boxing on one screen, and have the redzones open on other screens, wired in on all types of ****. But its not a great selling point as it stands.
Drop the biggest Draw in boxing and the only Draw on their App Currently? If DAZN was to do something like that they might as well Close their Doors to boxing all together like HBO did :nonono:
If they drop Canelo they may as well drop boxing. He is boxing on DAZN.
He's the draw, for sure. But, I don't know if they're going to see the return on their investment. I think, the DAZN approach is all or nothing. If they fail, it's because they did things like overpaying Canelo. Likewise, if they make it, it's because they were willing to overpay Canelo. I think their future weighs on that risky investment.
People just assume that having the biggest draw equals success. But, business fail all the time because they over-spent and didn't get their returns.
If they are gonna be viable in the US I think they got to eventually.
They picked up Japanese baseball awhile back & that got them to be a big deal in Japan. I don't think they become a big deal in the US til they got a major sport or two here. And with how they are dividing up rights these days among more platforms then ever I don't think its a crazy thing to suggest they'll acquire them. Its just a matter of when.
Looks like theyre working on something with the NBA, similar to the MLB thing they do https://sportsbybrooks.com/sources-dazn-exploring-possible-nba-redzone-style-show/
