I miss HBO Boxing; I really do. That was a classy, intelligent presentation. I miss Lampley and Kellerman. I miss hearing the music when HBO Boxing started. I miss the way HBO seemed to have the air, the history, the tradition, and the credibility of a good boxing gym.
All except for Lampley.
Unprofessional as hell and stupid about the sport. Always making wrong calls. How did he even have a job
Yeah blaming the Cold War on why Sergey Kovalev lost to Andre Ward & calling Gennady Golovkin a latter day Ali is laughable $h1t
Back in the day when HBO actually gave a **** and put on quality fights it was the pinnacle. By so ****ing far it's not even funny. The production value, the announcing team, the best fighting the best. It felt like an event you couldn't miss. I miss those days big time.
HBO was the greatest...as soon as the theme music came on I'd find myself getting amp'd. Their production quality was heads and shoulders above everything else's. It's a shame it's gone...and I can easily forgive them for their faults (re the bias) when I compare them to the alternatives now.
HBO really knew how to put on a show. Seeing these other services stumble their way through broadcasts, you realize how effortless HBO made it look. They were the Mayweather of broadcasters. We complained about them but now that they're gone you look back and realize, "Damn, they really knew what the fuk they were doing and nobody else was really close."
The HBO boxing writers/back room knew how to garner interest of aspiring young boxers. Utilizing percussion sounds mixed in with visuals of key moments of combat only a fighter would deem important is how they did it. And they'd use real fighters for some of these moments. Roy throwing a cross was one of them, Gatti doing a shuffle was another. On Showtime, when they'd show upcoming fights, they'd have a corridor in the background with Hatton shadowboxing in slo-mo. So, at least Showtime/Shobox? is still in the picture, mega props to them for that. We have that to be thankful for.
I cancelled HBO after 30 years when they decided to leave boxing.
Considered it myself. But real time and other shows I can’t give up. I was close though. Glad showtime still have boxing.
If this is what you think of lampley I really would like to know what you think of sergio mora because that guy shouldnt be within 10 feet of a microphone! He is absolutely atrocious.
Not sure he’s atrocious but yea they shouldn’t give him the mic.
Yeah no Network was better at build up STARS than HBO and DAZN, PBC/FOX/Showtime, Top Rank/ESPN will never be able to match or duplicate their incredible history and contribution to the sport
I just wanted Jim Lampley to go away, not for the entire Network to walk away from boxing. Looking at boxing ratings from ESPN and Showtime...Peter Nelson and HBO made the right call, they got out of the boxing business at the right time and probably have ZERO Regrets. Fighters asking for A LOT of money regardless if they're a Draw or Not and DAZN is giving guys a lot of damn Money so it was no way HBO would be able to compete with that so they bowed out gracefully
I muted the commentary on HBO lots of times.
I liked Roy Jones, sometimes he seemed like he was the only one watching the fight. Lampley and Kellerman always seem to talk too much and miss what was happening in the fight. I'd love it when they'd be talking some BS and all of a sudden Roy would break in with,"Oooh that was a great body shot".
That said, DAZN needs a total makeover, especially their broadcast team. Kenny's OK but Todd and Mora should look for some other line of work.

Co-sign to the fullest!

I cant disagree with you. maybe were all just being nostalgic, cuz of all the memories and big fights.
one thing i have to say and im trying not to sound like a hater, but honestly most PBC productions look outright amateurish compared to HBO. Like i know we cant expect much out of a FS1 broadcast but even the PBC PPV looked like it was FNF
Sometimes I think it's nostalgia but then I listen to the banter between commentators today and I realise I'm not wearing rise tinted glasses. I'm witnessing sh**te. I need Lampley's energy and Merchants snidey quips. It was a wonderful combo although I didn't appreciate it at the time and hated them at times.

I missed HBO Boxing before HBO Boxing was gone. That was the problem.
HBO Boxing wasn't what it used to be for years before they disappeared.
Agreed. That said. Even hbo at its worst sh it’s on dazn and fox. Royal sh it’s.
I miss HBO Championship boxing & boxing after dark, too!
They were EVENTS! I'd have a people over for fights every month, sometimes 2 times a month for their fights! Their matchmakers were great. Its a shame cause I dont get that same feeling as I did for these new boxing channels/promoters.
TR/ESPN just aint got it. DAZN is meh. And PBC/Fox/Show, for all the the boxers they have just arent making the quality fights that everyone wants to see; or if they are, theyre drowning the market with too many ppv's.
I guess we got what we wished for....more boxing but not enough quality or too many ppv's
