What’s your verdict on this one?
I used to think we’re just in awe of how the Floyd’s and the manny’s from the previous era were beautifully marketed by HBO and showtime (esp in the social media age) that we miss the greatness and potential of the new comers.
But few years had passed since their time and come to think of it.
Cotto and Margarito were not even as highly regarded as Spence right now at welter but 10 years ago they would have beaten Mikey Garcia who climbed two weight classes like a drum at welter.
Even Prime Hatton would have outmuscled and wrestled Mikey to submission at welter.
Fossil Mosley 10 years ago would have dropped past prime Khan like a bag of potatoes.
I hope I’m wrong but the window for the current welters to acquire greatness as the prev era, let alone the eras before that, is fast closing as most of them are already in their 30s.
Thoughts?
It's sad seeing this era compared to the 2 before it. Vernon Forrest, Ike Quartey, Pernell Whitaker, Felix Trinidad, Oscar De La Hoya, Floyd Mayweather Jr., Manny Pacquiao, Miguel Cotto, Shane Mosley, etc... were some tremendous fighters. I would pick any of them at their best at 147lbs. to beat Crawford, Thurman, Porter, and Danny Garcia. I would pick almost any of them at their best to beat Spence also.
I agree 100%
previous era was better talent pool you can even throw JMM in there too maybe maidana aswell as he was leaving the scene as the new era heated up at the top
look at the hell old man collazo from that era gave thurman while it lasted , old man manny handled broner easier than prime porter just small glimpses that the current batch are average at best
only crawford and spence could have made waves if they fought in that era
malignaggi was never a good welterweight. his only notable win was over senchenko who never beat anyone himself. he couldnt even beat cano legit
Paulie was never good period Daggum.
The current batch is terrible. Crawford wouldve held his own against prime Floyd and prime Manny. Hes literally the only one.
The jury isn't out on Spencer yet. Solid prospect, but hes 29 and still just a prospect. And he takes every opportunity to act like a promoter to stop the Crawford fight from happening. Dude looks shook like Mikey did Gamboa
MMAporter is horrible and would be Andre Berto level 10 years ago. Danny Garcia is horrible and would be Judah level. Thurman is like a Malignaggi honestly.
The last batch of Mosley, Cotto, Floyd, Manny, Bradley, Margarito, Paul Williams, and Malignaggi was definitely better...4 first ballot HOF with 1-2 other HOF possibilities (Bradley, etc.)

Lets see them all fight each other and lets also see how they do after they all fight each other. All are fairly young and are in or still close to their Prime as fighters so only time will tell
Base on their competition and performances on their last fights, given they’re on their primes and given the opponents, they do pale.
Put 2007-08 Cotto in there and he’d blast both Past prime amir and chubby Mikey
And like I said Cotto, ain’t even rated as high as spence or crawford in the peak of his career
No need to even go way back to the hearns and the leonards
I'm not sure Cotto would blast past both specially Mikey Garcia cotto had close fights against worse opposition in his prime
Margarito Cotto Clottey are not better than Thurman Crawford Spence let's stop being stupid take Floyd Mayweather out of it and this current WW are better
I really think the WW division has held up and didn't weaken like everyone predicted. Problem is, the matchmaking. It's bad. The true talents aren't able to shine and the gatekeepers are in the spotlight because they're the ones fighting the champs. It makes the div look like a joke but that's boxing in general right now. Tons of talent but nothing exciting happening.
Prime Cotto would beat any top 10 welterweight today.
Base on their recent performances, I agree. He puts chubby mikey and past prime amir earlier as well
Hell no.Past boxers are always rated ahead of the new guys. Spence and Crawford are excellent and don't pale next to any past welterweights. They might not beat prime Hearns and Leonard but those are all time great welterweights who crushed the best other welterweights of that era.
