You can't pass a torch when no one really cares about your sport. Women's boxing is a niche market, and will never rival or even come close to men's boxing. You may get a few high profile fights here and there, but by and large they are mismatches and the talent pool isn't deep enough. Besides, Ann Wolfe would have wiped the ring with both of them. Laila had her daddy's name to help sustain her career while beating up Denny's waitresses.
I hate the way they're handling women's boxing as well, being that there ARE a few good ones with names and actually don't look half bad. Also, if it's a championship fight, those rounds need to be 3 mins, not 2.
I won't go on record and say I'm clamoring for these fights, but damn, at least make a big deal when the fights can be made. Shields/Hammer is for sure THE biggest fight in women's boxing in a while.
We also have Alicia Napolean, Cecilia Brækhus, Hanna Gabriel, Serrano....make some of these fights happen and hype them up.
It's actually even worse than that. Shields first weight class (168) has 21 active female boxers in the world per BoxRec. Her second weight class (160) has 31.
Yea, I knew it was something ridiculous. I mean, if you’re a “world champion” of 31 people, what does it really mean?
Yup, the lack of power makes the fights very uninteresting.
Not to mention the talent pool in women’s boxing is pretty shallow. I remember hearing on a broadcast for one of her fights that there was less than 50 registered pro female boxers at 168lbs in the world or something like that. It’s questionable if these are even elite athletes, let alone elite boxers.
I disagree. Shields says the reason women's boxing isn't on that level is because they (Ali or Wolfe) won't pass the torch. The reason is people just aren't that interested in women's boxing. It just isn't that exciting to people.
Shields can’t crack an egg. She lands flush power shots for 10 rounds straight on women that look like they just walked in off the street, and can’t get them out of there.
