Ok so Maidana is throwing his hat back in the ring, so to speak. As a fighter the guy took Floyd to the woodshed (many thought he even won the first match), not at Floyd's favorite weight, but he showed the chops of a throwback pressure fighter with hard hands. Reminded me a bit of one of my favorite fighters of all time, El Matador Mayorga!! I thought it might be interesting to compare and contrast the two. Mayorga never really was able to come back but when he was at the height of his glory I thought he was spectacular.
His explosive punching was phenomenal and he had a sense of attacking with real vitrol and in the manner of one who had nothing to lose. Mayorga was imo funny, endearing in his own way, often apologizing after the match, but with some of the funniest smack talking... I feel like if he could have been managed better he had a lot of talent and could have gone further, but the apex of his career was the victories over Forrest who was an incredible fighter in his own right.
Mayorga went by the idiom that the best defense was to knock your opponents head off, and to make sure you got in that head before the fight, talking about family, and what you would do to them. Mayorga had skills but was one dimensional... If one took Artoro Gatti and had stuck a lamp cord up his posterior before fight and plugged it in...one would have Mayorga on a typical day. But like the way he fought, his star burned bright and soon.
Maidana was another guy coming up from the trenches...Neither Maidana, nor Mayorga fought in the prevailing style of the many Mexican fighters they would have been exposed to as, Central and South Americans. This is an interesting point. And while Mayorga was all about the explosive offense, Maidana was more circumspect, a careful pressure fighter with a suprisingly good jab.
Both guys fight/fought offensively and have/had good power and have managed to notch some impressive wins (Morales and Broner for Maidana). Both guys are old school, willing to mix it up. Both guys were succesful against very talented boxers, Forrest and Mayweather... And while one guy was not very succesful coming back, the horizon is open regarding Maidana's come back attempt!
Do you have a preference? BTW when Mayorga beat Six Heads Louis the first time, Louis was a very hot prospect. He also handled an always dangerous Nando...
Maidana is light years beyond Mayorga as a fighter
I was a fan of Mayorga but he was essentially at the right place right time when he beat down Forest who looked like was more concerned with being a rapper before the first fight then a
Actual boxer and Mayorga was able to capitalize on his unfocused approach to the fight. But Mayorga was never anything more then maybe a C+ fighter at best but he was able make a career from the results of the Forest fight by pulling off a huge unexpected upset and win the rematch but The rest of career can be summed up as being a classless disrespectful ghetto no f.ucks given Sh.ithead who loved to play the villain and was used as a b-sidefighter who would get beat down by Top Level Fighters he fought but they could capitalize off his name and antics but didn’t and never posed a serious threat of getting the W off them and usually he’d get battered KD or KO and while his attitude was that he wanted to And thrived from boxing matches that would turn into actual fights he really was never able to make it happen in any of the big fights he fought and be successful at it
Maidana is completely different his career wasn’t a result of being the first fighter to break Ortiz and showing everyfignter the blueprint for Beating Victor was his lack of heart and inability to go into deep waters if needed . Maidana didn’t use pulling off a unexpected upset and just ride that wave to get big fights just to get beat up . With the exception of the Devon fight where he looked like sh.it and admited he was ready to quit the sport . Maidana was probably one of the best in his era as far as showing heart and balls , fighting on no matter what still trying to get a W regardless and thrived when boxing matches got turned into a actiual fights something most fighters cant hamdle but Chino thrived off that type of fight and more often then not was able to make his fights those kind of fights , when the situation got difficult he still gave it his all
when most fighters would quit . Most fighters don’t have a 1/10 of the stones Maidana showed in his career and would buckle if they faced some of the same situations Maidana went through in his career and not only did he continue but often excelled after the situations. Whether that’s getting up from that Khan body shot in the first round I think where it looked
He got shot and going on to not getting the decision but winning the fight if that makes sense and being the one who was actually beating up and hurting Khan , that round where he laid a absolute drubbing on Amir battering from pillar to post the whole round was awesome and should have been 10-8 . His absolute war with Josesito Lopez basically having 2 fighters Willing to lay it all on the line and it was just a matter of who’s body gave out first to see who would win. Being the guy to kill the
Broner hype because Broner had no answer for a guy with relentless pressure from the time the opening bell rang who was constantly Throwing punches from odd angles
And who was willing to throw everything he had even the kitchen sink to get the W that night. He is the only guy I can remember who had Mayweather lose his cool and visibly frustrated in between rounds because Mayweather was hurt something I don’t think Mayweather ever enjoyed and probably because he hadn’t figured out a way to nullify Maidana attack even after 4-5’rounds who Maidana was able to make the first 4-5 rounds of the first fight not only competitive but he was winning the fight up to that point because he showed Mayweather absolutely no respect and was willing and wanted to make the fight a dirty f.uck the rules let’s make this a street fight not A boxing match and Mayweather committed to how he said he’d fight in the lead up and not just out box but stay and fight Maidana so it took almost half the fight to figure out and neutralize Maidana and
Didn’t start taking over until the second half of the fight but it was Maidana that made it A great fight
when he couldn’t make it a real fight and was
Forced to box the whole way through he often looked avg. Devon looked like a f.ucking HOF when he beat a unmotivated Chino. Mayweather with the exception of that Bomb that Chino landed at the end of the round was able easily out box and cruise to Viictory in the rematch. And Moreales was able to use veteran tactics to keep that fight close. Maidana unlike Mayora never got just get brutally assaulted when he fought and while Mayorga easily faced the better competition compared to Maidana because King had no issues with throwing Mayorga in with a steady stream of future HOFers from that era I can only assume
To make as much $ as possible from him not really caring about giving him a good career but just to have him used as B side fighter who’d just get beat down from the greats of his
Era . Mayorga never showed he could really hang with the best or even the second tier and possibly even the third tier fighters of his era. If
You forget about the Alexander fight where
He didn’t get beat up just painfully outboxed Maidana almost always showed he deserved to be in the same ring as whoever he fought the same can’t be said about Mayorga
If Maidana brings even 3/4 of the stones and let’s make it a WAr never give up type attitude in his comeback he might be able to make some of the PBC young guns at WW life difficult because I can’t recall any of the top WWs over there that have been forced and dragged into a dirty all out War. Maidana might be able to make it difficult for a couple of them if he ever fights them.
Look at referee Bayless coming to Mayweather's rescue for no reason and not letting Maidana follow up his hard punch to Mayweather's chest. Mayweather gets his own personal referee.
Look where?
What are you talking about?

I love Mayorga, he was pure entertainment and pure balls in the ring.
That said, Maidana is one of my favorite fighters active or not, and I love watching him fight. Old school, throwback slugger who can box, and make adjustments, and smells blood in the water like a shark. No phucks given type of prize fighter who gives guys problems in any era. Showed you could take a defensive wizard and boxing master like Floyd to deep, dark waters and make him fight for his life. A true champion who is willing to go out on his shield, if he doesn't send you away on yours.
I wouldn't be surprised if he is aware of Fury's comeback and has been inspired by it, even if he already had plans of returning. I am betting on Maidana shaking up a division soft and ripe for the picking, current champs haven't been battle tested by a live dog of Chinos caliber. Mayorga was better at his best but his best only lasted less than two years as I recall. Then he lost to Spinks who wasn't very good and then he really went down hill. To me he became an annoying clown. A trash talking, cigarette smoking, hard punching clown who won the little fights and lost the big fights. Maidana was always a hard trainer and a serious fighter who fought his heart out and never trash talked or disrespected his opponents outside the ring. Maidana kept getting better and peaked for Mayweather. I was a Maidana fan but not a Mayorga fan.

Mayorga at his peak was very unconventional and dangerous but he was easier to figure out imo.. i cant imagine Floyd struggling with mayorga.
Maidana is wild himself but there is more method to his madness. He has more weapons than Mayorga and overall higher boxing IQ.
