The fact of the matter is this. Every single American claimed Jeff Lacy was the 2nd/3rd/4th coming of a prime Mike Tyson. No exceptions. There were no hipster Americans who were going against Lacy. Every single one was on his band wagon. He was getting the star treatment, there was no doubt he was an All-time Great in the making. Yet, many of you fat Yanks on here try to say you knew Lacy was a hypejob and knew Joe was gonna win, and his win ain't chit. It's a middling trollpost, but it makes no sense. Most of you either didn't know what Boxing was back then, or you were up Lacy's ass. There's no shame in admitting the truth. A poll back then asking about if Lacy was heading to the HOF would have gotten a 100% positive response from Americans. But now, the same poll "did you think he was?" would get a 100% negative response. People just don't have the class and humility to admit the truth. So maybe I was a bit rude to Big Dunn. But it's impossible to believe one fat Yanks claims, when the majority of you lie about this topic.
I think Joe was great and doesn't get enough credit but TBH, Americans love to bash their own and this idea that Calzaghe would be idolized is BS. He'd get bashed just as much. Look at another SMW/LHW in Andre Ward, who had 5x the resume as Joe, was a gold medalist, and also undefeated. He get bashed too.
Amen to the bold. I was one of those. I couldn't stand him until later on in his career. I'm cool with Dre now! Green K for that.

No question. I don't know any Americans that like Ward. None. And I grew up in the Bay Area. :lol1:

I think Calzaghe was a great fighter for sure. I think Brits overrate him and US fans underrate him. I think he had a lot of stretches in his career were the competition was poor and he seemed uninterested and the fights were poor. He did rise to the occasion when he stepped up though. I think he'd have beaten Hopkins earlier had Hopkins not ducked that fight in 2002 or 2003. People forget that Calzaghe also wasn't prime in 2008. That perhaps would elevate him further though I don't see him beating the best of Roy Jones.
I rate Calzaghe somewhere towards the lower end of the top 10 fighters of the last 25 years, the greatest ever at 168, probably around 5 or 6 on the all-time British list and I'd imagine somewhere around 80-100 on the all-time pound for pound list. I think that sounds most fair when assessing Joe's career IMO.

Good one.
No doubt about it.
If Joe was an American, this thread wouldn't go this far. He wouldn't be shit, even with his complexion.
Calzaghe's overall accomplishments aren't as compelling as you'd like to believe. In the US, he'd be the real Average Joe of boxing.
He's one of the most over-rated fighters of the last 25 years. Hid away from the best fighters in his division until they were over the hill and he could pick them off. Lacy was garbage, Kessler a close fight that could have gone either way.
The rest was d-list trash like Tocker Pudwell and Peter Manfredo etc. His resume is basically straight garbage and 2 past prime HoF'ers in RJJ and BHop, both of whom would have embarassed him had he fought them in 2000/2001 rather than 2007/8
This is true and his "win" over Bernard Hopkins is the most disputed (argued about) outcome of the last 20 years. Dan Rafael, Kevin Iole, the Associated Press, BBC radio and countless others had Hopkins winning.
When Calzaghe could have cemented his legacy by rematching Hopkins and/or defeating a prime young lion like Chad Dawson he opted to retire. That is not the act of an "ATG" in this sport. Joe Calzaghe is the guy who gets up a few thousand dollars at the poker table and then runs out the door right before the playing field levels up.

Good post, by the way.

I was big on this guy back then. I'd say higher than D. C+?
Apology for what? You making outlandish claims, with no way for them to be disproved?
How is he the one making outlandish claims when you are the one in here saying if Joe was American he would be hailed the best of all time?
All Big Dunn said was Joe did not have a big list of prime names under his belt = true, along with he fought in a more obscure division which is also true.

So you are calling him a liar and saying he made up a lie on something as unimportant as where Joe rates among the greatest boxers of all time. I believe him and think you are being rude to him. I am sure he is not the only American who thought Lacy was overrated and Joe was underrated and bet on Joe to win. Another poster from LA, California says he bet on Joe to beat Lacy and you are not calling him a liar.
I agree with this whole post. The Big Dunn is a cool dude and knows his boxing.
You are an Englishman and like some English boxing fans you are bias in favor of boxers from the UK. Joe was good but not even close to being the greatest of all time. Why in hell would he be recognized as the greatest of all time when he wasn't? To be recognized as the greatest fighter of all time you have to actually be the greatest and Joe was not even close to being the best boxer in history and that wouldn't change if he was born in the USA. He just did not have the fighting ability to be the greatest of all time. He was not a big puncher and to be the greatest of all time you need to be more than a quick handed boxer. He did not beat Kesler, if I spelled his name right, by much and nobody calls Kesler an all time great. Ward beat him better than Joe did. Either Jones or Hopkins could beat Joe prime against prime. This notion that Joe is the best boxer in history is just an English fantasy and I doubt anybody on here who is not English will agree with you. Joe is one of the 100 best and possibly top 50 but no way is he the best fighter in history pound for pound. If English fighters are good they get the same respect as good American fighters. Lennox Lewis is very respected as are Benn and Eubank.
Excellent post. The truth!
You just missed one 's' in Kessler.
Another little known fact that can only make the fat Yanks even more jealous. Joe Calzaghe done little to no sparring throughout his entire career. Usually only against members of his gym, behind closed doors. Some of those fights in which Joe scored flawless victories, he done no sparring in the lead-up. That is crazy.
If he was American he would still be remembered the same.
If he was African American he would still be remembered the same. He didn't rock the world with his opponents or his performances. Lennox Lewis did. This applies to Lennox Lewis not Joe Calzaghe. Another example is Larry Holmes and he's American.
The best example of underrated is Micheal Splnks he was undefeated as a light heavyweight champ and soundly beat everyone. We all know Joe Calzaghe would NOT have beaten Larry Holmes or Gerry Cooney. He would have ***** himself if he saw a Prime Mike Tyson in the ring. Calzaghe's name should not even be mentioned with Micheal Spinks.
Not one American picked Calzaghe, not one. Implying you did is like saying you've been hit by lightning 6 or 7 times. Never happened so stop bullchitting. So you are calling him a liar and saying he made up a lie on something as unimportant as where Joe rates among the greatest boxers of all time.
