Just asking because people seem to think Jabs = body shots or are even superior.
IMO, Body shots > Jabs
Are BoxingScene posters aware of this, because it seems as though they aren't.
Judges will give body shots more respect than jabs when scoring a fight. Jabs are a tool to find range, and help set up body work or combinations.
They have several uses and are a great tool, but by themselves they get you few points. Unless it's the amateurs, but who gives a damn about the amateurs.
I voted jabs to get this party started. It depends if the body shots have no effect and doesn't hurt or slow up the other guy then they count as punches not some kind of superior weapon. The same for jabs. If the jabs don't confuse, disrupt or force the other guy to stop punching they are just scoring blows like the body punches I mentioned. The head is the primary scoring area for most judges. With both punches you have too look at the effects of the punch and are they doing what the boxer intends if you want to give them more credit. On one hand body shots are usually harder but most judges pay more attention to head punches. The majority of jabs are to the head. Larry Holmes had one of the best jabs in history. He used it to set up his offense and confuse his opponent. If you want to see how important jabs can be look at Larry's fights.
This. ^^^^^^
Yes Donkey. I'm in a fight right now. Fighting on whether or not replying to your stupid ass.
You’re overstepping buddy.
Slow down and learn boxing more first.
For development you don't say???? Wow I didn't realize that pros used it as a spring board.
No Shiiit guy.
What a Donkey lol
Have you ever even been to a fight before?
Here and there, but Canelo caught and blocked most. Canelo has great defense.
He does. It's much flashier too. Gennady doesnt get hit clean as often as people think, it's a subtler defense. His face just so happens to bruise easy. Not denying Canelo hit him enough, but people shouldn't be going off facial damage, especially when Ggg's face looked worse due to that 12th round elbow.
Ok then....
'May' as in 'may or may not'... it just depends doesn't it. The thrust of your argument appears to be that judges do or should score body punches more highly than jabs as a matter of course. What I'm trying to explain is that the advantages of body punching are not in the direct scoring but in the likelihood they'll slow and fatigue an opponent and allow you to win later rounds more easily, which of course will lead to you getting more points - but only if they do actually slow him.
Actual fighters give a damn about the amateurs... lmao.
I swear this forum is horrible.

This ^. Dudes invest to the body in the hope of gaining advantage down the line.. they pay dividends by tiring and weakening an opponent, but in and of themselves they ain't somehow automatically scored as more significant than other punches, even if their cumulative effect may be more devastating.
Ok then....
Thanks for posting that in slo mo. I never realized that the left hook Canelo landed at the end of that sequence wasn't a scoring punch. A scoring punch has to land with the knuckles. I've noticed that before with his body punches but I didn't realize he also slaps going to the head. Again many thanks..
This dumbass just exposed the fact he doesn't know what a boxing glove looks like when you ball your fist.
:lol1:
Canelo threw a lot of body shots in the 2nd fignt with GGG, but Gennady actually caught quite a bit of them. A good amount didn't even land. His jab kept landing so of course he's going to keep throwing them. And his jabs are solid. Still wish he threw more body shots. There was one he threw in the 8th that literally moved Canelo. What's done is done though. He wasn't going to get the win. In a months time, Canelo signed his contract. They had that planned even before the fight fight happened.

Those body shots drained GGG. GGG was running for his life because he had nothing left in the tank in the 12th. Canelo had to tell him to come take his beating like a man.

A power shot is any punch that isn't a jab. It could be a nothing punch thrown by a weak puncher its still called a power shot.
And on the flip side a fighter with a strong jab that lands more like a right hand rather than a jab isnt getting it scored as power shot even though it really is.
But even though the jab is landing to the head its not considered a "power shot" whereas a body shot is.

NO! Body Work gets overlooked big time by not just The Fake Hardcore Boxing Fans but Boxing MEDIA, Boxing Announcers and "So Called Boxing Experts" as well but it is the most one of the most EFFECTIVE punches in boxing also a High % Punch
Teddy Atlas have some incredible analysis on why "Going To The Basement" as he likes to call it is so important which I'm sure he learned from working under Cus D'Amato. Don't have great TEACHERS in boxing anymore, no more Cus D'Amato, Manuel Steward guys like that. Now it is just mostly Trainers who want to maintain friendship with their fighter and not get fired I guess :dunno:
He's right body shots can be devastating if the have an effect on the opponent. If they don't they are just another punch. What I think Teddy is saying is an accumulation of punches to the body can take the other guys legs away in the later rounds. Untill the effect of the punches show up a judge most likely score them as another punch because there is no guarantee the other fighter will wilt. There have been lots of fights where a fighter invests in the body early and gives away rounds to do it. Problem is if the other guy can take it he's screwed.
head shots have always been considered more important than body shots which is why the amateur scoring system was based around it. you all keep going on about canelos vicious body attack yet it was ggg who came on stronger in the 2nd half of the fight. how does that work?

Hmmm. Interesting question. I'm kind of torn because for the most part a good solid body shot is better than a jab BUT sometimes a fighter will land a real strong snappy jab that knocks the opponents head way back and sweat flies off so I feel like VISUALLY that resonates more with the judges and crowd.
Just my opinion.
