The guy's got the the look, and the fight to back it up I can't help but think if he spoke english at least well as Oscar De La Hoya did he'd be one of the bigger sports figures in the country?
Look at Conor McGregor not even American but one of the best known athletes still.
I think more Americans would embrace Canelo if he could speak the language.

Of course. If he could speak English then he could be marketed across more platforms. More platforms equals more exposure. More exposure equals more fans.canelo can speak English
But I think he chooses not to..
Alot of mofos in nsb cant even speak or write english and they are american...

This exactly
Being able to speak english makes people relate to him more so it’s certainly a plus.
Prior to GG fight, during postfight interview he shouted , “ hey GG my friend where are you “ in this heavy ass Mexican accent and that just killed it. Lol. He sounded real gay.
It wouldnt hurt to speak english
Disagree Mayweather and McGregor are big big names even among casual sport fans.
There is a dearth of relatable combat sports figures is the issue. Mayweather is big in the black community and McGregor has a huge following among the white boy frat types.
Nobody relates to the awkward mumbling 6'7" beanpole Wilder for example.
Canelo however has those all-american looks doesn't look like a "******" as the stereotype many Americans have towards mexicans.
He could be big in mainstream america if he could just communicate in English.
I don't think speaking English would really make much of a difference. People tend to dislike him because he's always getting controversial decisions in his favor. I went to see Golovkin vs Canelo 2 at the movie theater. I live in a very white area, not one single person was rooting for Canelo. He definitely looks more white/American than Golovkin haha.
I'm not even sure how Canelo being mainstream in America would benefit boxing. You would just get more mismatches to keep the milk flowing from the cash cow.

No, I think that most people just don't care about combat sports. It's pretty rare for me to hear people discussing boxing or MMA in public.
Also, De La Hoya won a gold medal in the Olympics. Back then, the Olympics was definitely more popular and the boxing wasn't shown on some random channel like NBC sports at 2am or whatever.
