I have always agreed with this statement. But can’t argue that there hasn’t been a general shift across all weight divisions away from America. Not to say there aren’t still great US fighters lower down or that they aren’t still the biggest boxing nation, but they are no where near as dominant as they were.
It is most pronounced at HW due to what Arum mentioned, but that isn’t all that is happening here.
Gary russell jr doesn't belong in the same sentence with that fraud Chris Eubank Jr. Gary lost one fight to P4P #1, come on now. Eubank JR is domestic level.
Fair comment, I agree
Chris Eubank Jr, Gary Russel Jr come to mind

Why is size and athleticism requirements for boxing? No matter how big or small you are there is a weight class for you in boxing. Athleticism isnt even a requirement for boxing look at mikey garcia for example...Soft asss mushy body, didnt play other sports, admitted by his trainer and himself to never have done a push up or sit up all he does is run and spar to get ready for fights. As you can see he is very low on the athleticism list but yet in boxing hes an ELITE.
I agree with you I'm sure if alot of nba nfl players boxed as kids there would be a few greats here and there but I just dont think its as much as arum claims. Boxing is much more than just size, strength and athleticism though those are good attributes to have and a good starting point to build off of.
There are no guarantees to Arum's claims, but it goes like everything else. If you increase the Gene Pool in boxing, the chances of one being a great increases. Boxing used to be a primary sport, with many more fighters than there are now. These days less and less get into it. The talent pool suffers as a result. Look at all the great fighters from Eastern Europe and the UK who are finding success now. It is directly related to the popularity to the sport in those locations. Mexico is still strong and popular with it. The US though is not nearly as dominant. Why? Less youngsters getting into it.
Exactly, but, the size and athleticism are requirements. Imaging if lets say 500 large pro athletes in the NBA and NFL over the years, started out boxing instead at a young age. There is a very good change you could get 20 good fighters and maybe a few great fighters among them.
That is what Arum is talking about. Athletes in general gravitate towards other sports these days.

Exactly. Fighting sports require MORE than just being big and athletic. Remember Seth Mitchell? the michigan st football player HBO tried to hype up lol

Soccer has always been popular. Doesn't change that soccer is a much more popular sport in the majority of countries and most athletes go to it. Boxing was mostly an American sport that's why you dominated, like most sports that provide competition America quits and goes to play by itself in the NFL. :lol1:
You have no sports for your smaller athletes that's why you are still relevant in boxing at all.
Boxing was mostly an American sport? England invented it. Someone else just did it better.
Kind of like with soccer. :lol1:
All the other nations great smaller fighters are playing soccer......
Did the other nations dominate the smaller divisions for a century then suddenly stop because soccer became popular?
Arum is right for once. Deontay Wilder played basketball growing up and was going to play Division I college football.
He decided to start boxing late instead. And now he's heavyweight champion of the world.
I watch the fight he lost the fight the other guys he fought were Butterbean type opponents
Boxrec says Ed "Too Tall" Jones was 6-0 with 5KOs. :dunce:
Iran Barkley Nephew is one of the best Running Backs in the NFL!
It is kinda true NBA and NFL are far more popular sports in the US, also can make Millions in those sports FASTER compared to boxing. The best athletes will ALWAYS pick those sports over boxing. Typically the guys who are too short for the NFL and NBA may go the Boxing Route because they never grew big enough to play those other sports
I'm sure there would be a couple pro fighters to find in those ranks, but I'm going to go with sheer numbers and assume that these mythical HW greats are just working a regular job somewhere.
--- Too Tall has an undefeated boxing record.

Just because someone can play ball doesn’t mean they can fight. Take a look at Ed Too Tall Jones 6’9 gets knock out by a small White dude who was 6’1 . Even though Mark Gastenau was White he was athletic as hell Mr Sack Man yet he couldn’t fight his way out of a paper bag. Pure BS just making excuses
Well of course not. Nothing is guaranteed. What arum meant was getting the best athletes (such as Lebron) to take up boxing. Not all will be great, but many can be. Right now boxing is like the 4th option for many young kids. American Football, Basketball, baseball, even soccer is getting better athletes.
