What are your thoughts on this? IMO the Philippines has produced some nice fighters who are HOF material, one being an ATG: Manny Pacquiao, Nonito Donaire, Donnie Nietes, and Brian Viloria. These 4 have fought in the same era but Pac's success has overshadowed the other 3 who also have a nice boxing career. All 4 have definitely earned their place in the Hall of Fame.
Bump.
Hopefully we see more top fighters coming from the Philippines once Pacquiao, Donaire, and Nietes leave the sport. Jerwin Ancajas seems promising, although he was disappointing in his last fight.
Donaire is definitely HOF. His body of work from 112-122 until he met Rigo is exceptional. 126 was way too heavy for him. He still has a title so right now he can only add to his legacy being in the WBSS as he wasn't expected to progress anyway. I hope he retires after his next loss however.
I don't think Viloria will get in but he'll be on the ballot at some point.
Nietes will be on the ballot and likely get in, I think if he were to unify at 115 then that would rubber stamp it.
Surprised that some people are still unsure about Nietes being HOF. Surely being a world champion for 10 years while also being consistent and going 4 weight classes and having a good longevity, especially for his weight class, should already be a shoe in. Ricardo Lopez and Orlando Canizales career was filled with a rather dull set of opposition but they were still reigning champions regardless and that was enough for them to be in. Mark Too Sharp Johnson’s overall resume was also pretty subpar but he got in anyways. The same can be said about Nietes and I have no doubt that he’s getting in at some point.
Nietes is really good but maybe has to do a little more. He's certainly skilled, very consistent and has great longevity especially for his weight class. Viloria I enjoyed too and has had a fine career but not quite hall of fame worthy.
Donaire is a shoe in and Pacquaio goes without saying. Pacquaio being the best Filipino fighter ever followed by Elorde and Villa with Donaire fourth.
No he’s not on the ballot unfortunately but I do think he might have a shot at some point in the distant future. I think, after his win over Ioka, Nietes has set himself as a sure lock for HOF.
Don't think Nietes is a lock at all.
Pacquaio obviously and Donaire is aswell.
Nietes? Good champion but definitely not a lock in my eyes.
He was a good fighter for sure and his win over Segura was exceptional but his resume just isn't strong enough.
Penalosa? He was pretty good. I wouldn't vote for him. Is he on the Ballot?
The only sure fire definite HOFers for me are obviously Pacquaio and also Donaire.

I’m hoping that’s not the case. Always found the Hawaiian Punch highly underrated, entertaining to watch. Also had a brief resurgence in his career despite having some bad luck. Still remembered when he stopped Segura, who was coming off 2 wins over Calderon.
What’s your opinion on Gerry Penalosa and his place as a potential HOFer?

Yeah, true.
Still, he won't get in I doubt he even gets on the ballot.

Thing is there have been plenty of fighters who have been inducted that most boxing fans outside of hardcore boxing aficionados have never heard of. Do you really think people here at Nonstop boxing would know anything about Brian Mitchell, Jung Koo Chang, Myung Woo Yuh, Hilario Zapata, Yoko Gushiken, etc? Probably not.
Viloria might or might not get in but he’s had worthy enough career for him to possibly be considered. You never know.
Yeah, true.

Nah. They didn't.
Gatti didn't achieve nearly enough to be in the HOF but Gatti is known for his amazing fights that's why he got in.
I'd be willing to bet most people who consider themselves Boxing fans don't even know who Viloria is.
Never say never, but he has about as much chance as Mayweather winning a nobel peace prize. It ain't happening.

Well, never say never. People said the same about Gatti and, well...
Nah. They didn't.

Given how low the bar has been set for HOF standards it’s not out of the question for Viloria to get in. I think his resume is underrated and has done enough to be HOF material.
Nah.
Not happening.
Never in a million years.
No way in hell does Viloria get into the HOF.
