I do not rate Joshua, however his bigger criticisms are the parts i disagree with most. 1 being he has a glass chin, i actually think he has got a excellent chin which is why someone with such poor defense has kept his belts thus far, 2) ducking, i disagree with this as well, yes he thought inactive povetkin and Wlad well out of their primes, but throwing in Dillon whyte and Joseph Parker, his resume beats Wilder by a mile and is arguably better than Furys.
However the main point of this thread is not whether Joshua has a good chin, it is whether his punch resistance survives the next 4 years. The wlad fight however way you spin it was brutal for him, he was effectively concussed twice in that fight. His fight with Povetkin a 6 ft 2 39 year old he shipped so many left hooks it wasn't funny. Round one he got wobbled. Dillon Whyte he shipped a brutal left hook, and if Dillon was not so out of shape could have got him out of there. Throw in the fact hes been knocked out in the amateurs and brutally in sparring(David Price) .
My question is in 2020/2021 if he does fight Usyk,(Usyk beats him now imo) will Joshua punch resistance be okay after Wilder, Pulev, Fury, Whyte etc all in rematches?
IMO for only 22 fights he has shipped a whole lotta punishment, and imo his defense and ring generalship is getting WORSE, not better.
thoughts?
Deotay Wilder is flawed, however with a reasonable chin, okay cardio, underated and improving jab and incredible right hand, i now favour him to beat Joshua 60-40. Joshua defence is terrible.
Joshua will and should despose of c level fighter Garcia, however his distance judgement as shown against Povetkin was terrible. His defense was only good in the Parker fight as the ref dived in every time Parker was about to dismantle him.
Wilder is fav on my cards and if he is underdog v Joshua than i will be betting on him.
No it was a left hook in the 5th that knocked him for six against Wlad Imo Round 5 was a 10-9 round as joshua was taking left hook and even uppercuts.
Joshua cardios/chin fine, its his woeful skills and defence thats not sustainable...
He overexerted himself after he thought he had Klitchko down for the count and was moving sluggishly afterwards. It's pretty obvious.
Joshua has fought good opposition and of course he's took punches. So far he's found a way to win like all champions have to. The one time wilder stepped up, he was a New York doctor away from being stopped himself.
WLAD carried Povetkin, we all know that, and kncoked down Povekin(a prime active one at that) at will.
Joshua was appalling against out of Prime Povetkin, was getting tagged constantly.
I saw an interview Joshua claiming he is fighting for 10 years, well he will be lucky to survive the next 2 years the amount of power shots he ships.
The Wlad fight which concussed him badly was his "learning2 fight where he can show his improvement onwards...he should be making a mockey of Povetkin, and instead he took left hook after left hook...
Stopped reading at "Wlad carried Povetkin"
Get a life, mate.
He only got caught against Wlad because he punched himself out. He had Wlad hurt got too excited and tired himself out. He learned from that.
I think the real issue is that he has struggled more fighting shorter 'rush in' fighters - Povetkin and Takam rushed in underneath the head.
It seems that he figured it out a bit in the late rounds vs Povetkin.
His head movement is still limited but he's his only real competition in my opinion is Fury.
Fury could box the **** out of him.
I think at this point he's still strong and no serious damage occurred.

Povetkin was better than anybody AJ has fought so far, apart from Wlad.
Nobody has ever KO'd Povetkin before .. not even Wlad.
Like Fury said, that was a terrific performance by AJ against a very dangerous opponent. Imo, Fury and AJ are the only 2 active HWs who could beat Povetkin.

But hes not improving. He shipped 47 power shots against Povetkin. Povetkin was a 6 ft 2 39 year old who was inactive.Which makes a mockery of how he was ahead on the cards
You keep repeating it, but how was povetkin inactive? If he was inactive than most boxers are inative.

This is a very good assessment. You know your boxing, mate!
AJ is improving. The reason he isn't looking as spectacular and explosive lately is that he is fighting more carefully to preserve energy and avoid gassing the way he did against Wlad.

I think his poise is impressive.
Seems like the TS has an elevated standard of what he should be.
AJ isn’t that good that he could neutralise someone like Povetkin. And actually trying to fight tall seemed like it was putting him in the zone for the big arcing hooks. He wasn’t doing brilliantly offensively either. He bent his knees and changed the angle of attack and got him.
He can’t have known that was going to be the way for him to win until he got in there. Povetkin was quick and explosive and he couldn’t hit him with a jab. He took his lumps for a few rounds and then mixed it up.
AJ isn’t that much better than the others. Might not even be better than Wilder or Fury.
But of course he’s getting better.
I think he does a lot of thinking in there and I don’t agree about AJ’s gas tank. I think he has to be very careful and he is. It does empty.

i think joshua is good and getting up from that klit shot showed something as well, the fight with wilder will prove how good, i hear he is finally offering wilder a percentage, i mean when it comes out im half expecting it to be low, like 20% or something lolz, this fight needs to happen next april
and the Joshua now if he fought the 2016 active Povetkin would have been KOED. Povetkin was fresher and more active.
Face it, to show improvement he should have made an example of Povetkin, not lose brain cells every round to then stop him eventually.
Like someone said, if he is literally retiring in the next few years then i can kinda accept that, but if he trying to cement any legacy/wordl records then i am afraid he will struggle to beat Dillon Wyhte/Parker with his decline let alone UYSK/FURY,PULEV OR Wilder.
He is like the US budget deficit and the China property market, his style is not sustainable for more than 2/3 years at best.
Povetkin is much, much better than you think he is.
I agree with what Tyson Fury said about AJ vs Povetkin - that AJ fought a terrific fight against a very dangerous guy.
I think his poise is impressive.

Agree with this, don't know WTF everyone else is talking about, massive over analysing. First time he'd been in with a fighter like Povetkin (short, fast) of that quality, even if he is past prime. He had to make adjustments as you pointed out, but unless Joshua caught him early Povetkin was always going to have his moments. I think people taking his level of opposition for granted, and overrating Joshua maybe.
You can't bulldoze fighters at this level so it's natural he takes a more careful approach. I think he can be aggressive when he needs to be, I don't think that Klitschko fight has taken anything away from him physically or mentally, in fact on the contrary, I think he learned a lot, and realised he can go to a dark place if he needs to.
I think Joshua is the most well rounded fighter in the division but I agree that doesn't make him the best, they'll have to get in the ring and prove it.
Why do you say he is shipping too many punches instead of saying he stops too many punches or he gets hit too much? I have never heard anyone say a boxer is shipping too many punches before. I don't think he gets hit that much and his chin is not that bad. Wlad can knock anybody down.
Me too never herd shipping a punch how are they punching AJ via fed ex ups or USPS mail ?
I think his poise is impressive.

He got dropped by Wlad and wobbled by Whyte. Wlad is a colossal puncher and a truly amazing fighter, not much anyone could do about that outside Fury who has a diff style. Aj does seem a bit disinterested since Wlad tbh.
He had a dream scenario against a legend, I’m not sure anyone will ever bring him to such a high again and that seems to be how hes behaving.
He was in an absolutely electric arena fighting a legend and it turned into classic fight with him having to dig deep and show his mettle and getting the stop later. Wilder and the current Fury will probably never get him that high. It seems like he’s reached the pinnacle and he’s gone through the motions the last two fights.
He doesnt get hit that often and if we’re honest, Povetkin is his second best win behind Wlad, even an old Povetkin. Behind Wilder and (huge maybe) Fury, the division is a waste land. I cant see other guys competing with the winner of the fury-wilder-aj...even on bad nights. Neither Wilder or AJ have the class imo to hold the division hostage for the next decade...AJ is akilled no doubt but I dont think he’ll be around for more than 10 fight. He’s a smart guy and has a lot going for him with his image/popularity. We’ll see though. He’s gritty and has a dog in him with a big mean streak so maybe he just wants to fight for as long as he can
he has a decent chin, thing is he always is guaranteed to get caught, but who doesn't? he usually survives but if he gets hit vs the wrong guy and wobbled I think he will be finished, and imo that wrong guy is Wilder. But hes doing what he has to with whos in front of him and is currently the best HW we have resume wise, but imo hes digressed since the klits fight due to the fact he was knocked downj so its constantly in the back of his mind.... Hopefully we get a chance to see these 2 fight before one is out of prime or is KOd because both wilder and AJ get hit.
