Ward is retired and has not fought in over a year...Usyk is far bigger naturally as Ward had to give up size to Kovalev... Not really a realistic fight
ward didn't give up a lot of size to kovalev...they have the same height and reach and ward was a big smw. he would be giving up considerable size to usyk tho. but ward has one thing that usyk hasn't really shown...the ability to make it a dog fight inside and make it dirty. he'd need a fight or 2 at cruiser tho and since usyk is talking about going to hw, it aint gonna happen.
Usyk is most likely too big but for so called boxing fans to act like ward would get smoked with zero comp is terrible. Also to act like all he does is low blow and cheat to win is terrible... He isnt the first dirty boxer the sport has seen guys
Ward worked Kovalev's body both fights causing him to gas, Usyk had serious trouble even establishing his jab and didn't land anything clean until the very end of the 5th when Bellew got careless.
There is a massive gap in skill between Sergey & Bellew, there are A LOT of guys better than Bellew at LHW.
Bellew's career was over at LHW until he revived it in a weak cruiser division. Even when a shot Cleverly moved up to fight him at cruiser he could barley beat him by a SD, so it's not like he transformed into this completely different fighter.
Bellew gassed largely because he hadn't fought at cruiser in 2 years and is already 35, this wasn't even the best version of Bellew, it was one of the weakest.
not sure about Kovalev being massively more skilled than Bellew. Even if he is, Usyk is clearly above Kovalev in most areas apart the punch power.
Usyk wasn’t trying to establish jab, he was waving his lead (right) arm in front of Bellew while bending at the waist. It was very effective as it drained Bellew’s mental and physical energy. It should be noted that Bellew has an excellent jab and he wasn’t able to land anything on Usyk (look at Usyk’s face after the fight). My impression is that Usyk was doing exactly what he wanted. He followed the game plan. He was a hunter (against a bigger puncher) and was pressing Bellew very effectively. It was only a matter of time, when he switched up the tempo (to go with Bellew not being able to sustain the energy), when he finished Tony. I found the whole approach very methodical and pleasing to watch.
For the point that Bellew was the worst version of himself... Again I cannot agree. Most fighters said this was one of Bellew’s best perfromances and I certainly agree. He did all he could. Usyk is just that much better.
Usyk has a phenomenal footwork, amazing stamina (moving + hands up all the time) and is very fluid. The only thing that goes against him is that he is not the biggest puncher and that’s why I am not sure about his HW future. I cannot see Ward having much chance against him. I don’t see many things going for Ward in that matchup.
Ok. I guess we will see how good usyk is.
But the idea he is a different class than the p4p top 5-10 fighters ward fought is insane.... The idea his record is even comparable to ward is insane.
Gassiev isn't even top 50 p4p in my book. He couldn't get a belt at lhw or hw. It's only because he fights in cw! The weakest division in boxing.
P4P doesn't mean sht. It's all fantasy.
How do you rate how good is CW compared to LHW and HW?
There is no barometer, benchmark for that.
It's all about the eye test and from the eye test Usyk is a better boxer than Kovalev, Jack or Stevenson.
Usyk succeeded in ams where Kovalev failed, he also unified his division while Kovalev failed to do so (not fighting The Pimp) and lost his titles to a SMW.
All i know is Usyk beat everybody in his division in ams and pros and NOT A LOT OF FIGHTER CAN SAY THAT IN THE GAME.
There is no doubt that Usyk is P4P a better fighter than Kovalev let alone "per se", he's also a bigger test to Ward PERIOD

What a well thought, reasonable argument.
This is mind blowing...
I agree here, but in terms of skills but also physics, Usyk is a completely different class than all of Ward's opponents.
Ward talked about Bellew and never talked about Usyk for a reason.

Based on how poor Usyk looked against a 35 year old Tony Bellew that hasn't made cruiser in 2 years. He didn't exactly impress against Briedis either.
LHW is a whole lot stronger than cruiser.
Bellew couldn't even clearly out box a shot Nathan Cleverly at cruiser, but he was out boxing Usyk. In terms of skill Ward is a completely different class than all of Usyk's opponents, especially Bellew.

LOL it's the same ggg argument! Better amateur record than ward. Are you kidding me? Ward the gold medalist who hasn't lost since he's 12...usyk would be a good fight solely because usyk is much bigger than ward but usyk ain't atg amateur or whatever you make him out to be. He wasn't Loma either who is a atg amateur.
And are you comparing the weakest division in boxing to when ward cleaned out smw when it was the top 2 division in boxing.... Gtfo with your fanboyism. Name one p4p top 25 or even 50 in cw..... Just one other than usyk
Usyk is world, europe and olympic gold.
His record is better than Ward's as an amateur.
CW was one of the hottest division too before the tournament.
But since they all took a loss from Usyk CW stock went down, simple as that.
Not surprising to see you ride on this.
Gassiev was rated high before Usyk shut him down.
Regarding Ward I don't see Froch slow arse as some P4P top 10 material either if you want to play the P4P argument, P4P being all fantasy match up.
Usyk will be too much for Andre Ward. He will actually hurt him. The size differential and size disparity would just be too great to overcome. So therefore, allow the man to stay retired. He has nothing to prove by fighting Oleksandr at this point of his career. Ward has been here and done that.
Based on what? Usyk isn't miles away from Ward's accomplishments in boxing. He's more decorated as an amateur, as a pro also cleaned up his own division winning a tournament,
he just lacks the 2 division title IMO
Ward couldn't clearly outbox Kovalev, went life and death for 20 rounds before scoring a TKO,
he's not outboxing Usyk who is a more fundamentally sound fighter than Kovalev and has a lot of reach.
He's not either bullying Usyk who is far bigger than Kovalev.
Unless Ward brings back increased unseen special power at CW he's not beating that guy.

Well.. Kovalev was winning most rounds against Ward before gassing out in the 1st fight and even put him down. Similar, in the 2nd fight it was pretty balanced before he gassed. And kovalev is not the most skilled fighter, huge puncher, but not a skilled master...
Bellew put everything in the first 4-5 rounds. Paulie had it spot on - Bellew had a great game plan, throwing every 20-30 secs with loads of movement, hoping for an opening. However, that gameplan cost him draining himself in the first 1/3 of the fight, while Usyk didn’t even switched to the 2nd gear.
Ward couldn't best Kovalev in a jab war or at the distance. Only when he got inside, he manage to get a success. I don’t think that gives him most chance against much more skilled and much bigger Usyk (compared to Kovalev).
Ward worked Kovalev's body both fights causing him to gas, Usyk had serious trouble even establishing his jab and didn't land anything clean until the very end of the 5th when Bellew got careless.

Well lets not pretend that Kovalev didn’t put Ward down and arguably won the first fight. Even in the second fight it was pretty even until Kovalev fully gassed.
We all saw that Kovalev has serious issues. Just listen his trainer at the time - he was drunk during his camp.
Well done for Ward, he is a HOF no doubt, but lets be realistic. His chances against Usyk would be very slim. That doesn’t take anything from him. If they were the same size, that would have been an interesting match-up. I still think Ward would struggle with a high output though..
Realistic answer here. Nice job.
Ward (immediately after the Kovalev fight) by UD, this wasn't even prime Bellew in there and he managed to steal 4 rounds before gassing out. Bellew hadn't even fought at cruiser in 2 years, and the skill gap between him and Ward is so massive it wouldn't even be fair.

he's already an atg in the minds of people who ignore that he was a huge cheating piece of crap
This bitter shtick you have going is embarrassing at this point.
All humour it totally gone it's just sad as hell now.
just 1? he needed 2 just to fight ggg and 3 for kovalev. you are more confident than ward himself. lets give him 10 tune ups to see where hes at
Say Wha? He needed 2 to adjust to moving up to 175. Guess winning multiple belts at different weight classes against ranked top 5 p4p fighters at the time wasn't enough for you.
Ggg did you just make that up? I thought he needed 1 since he had that layoff due to promoter issues. But doesn't matter since ggg ran away so fast from taking that L.
Ward was a small light heavy even though he beat up Kovalev, doubt he would do as good at cruiserweight.
"beat up" is a great way to describe stopping someone with a literal 5 punch combination to the balls.
