The guy is criminally overrated and I'm stunned he was never beaten down like Bute. Probably because he never fought anyone
No matter how you scored his fight with Hopkins though it was still neck and neck so even if you had Hopkins winning Joe was still very much in the fight.
That is honestly one of the worst fights to watch ever though. It's criminally hard to score with all the nonsense that went on...holding, low output, blocked/missed punches, weak/soft landing punches.
I recognize his talent but vicious punching and Calzaghe doesn't belong in the same sentence? What's next? Fireworks from Andre Ward? Boxing clinic by Provodnikov? That granite chin of Amir Khan? Unmatched will and warrior mentality of Nicholas Walters?
It's far more likely that you've seen less than 10 Joe Calzaghe fights
i haven't seen any of his fights are they good? i've only seen the last 5 seconds when he's slapping at air and the fights are stopped. you think that might taint my view of him?
Well at least they were very effective because it worked for him. His style was so awkward and when you add in the weird angles, footwork and the fact that he was also a southpaw. It made it almost impossible to defend against.
His fights were available in the video trading block subforum years ago, I watched all of his pro bouts and the first 20 or so of Prince Naseem's *shrug*
When heJoe sat down on his punches he definitely had power and for more than just a few fights. You're posting cherry-picked highlights of his slapping.
oh i guess he never sat down on his punches then?
Obviously he adjusted his punching technique once he started breaking his hands and yeah we know he started out looking like a flashy amateur not a KO artist, but for awhile he had power in both hands, just ask Enzo Maccarinelli his longtime sparring partner, or Chris Eubank who Joe put on his back in the opening round, and many many others.
Chris Eubank ''The main thing I remember about Calzaghe was how hard he punched. I thought he had bricks in his gloves at one point.
On top of that, he puts me down in the opening 15 seconds, for only the second clean knockdown of my life. (Laughs) .''
''I've never been knocked down in the first round before Joe hit me with a powerful left-hand punch, within half a minute of the bell ringing I was having to pick myself up and deal with the realization that I was in for a long night. That punch really hurt and thereafter it was a tough fight.''
Enzo Maccarinelli ''A lot of people think Joe can't punch but he's actually very heavy handed''
Richie Woodhall "Calzaghe slaps? well, he slaps hard"
Karl Barwise ''I thought I'd been hit by a lorry''
Andy Flute ''I've never been hit so hard and so often''
Tony Quigley "After working with Robin Reid last month I was already buzzing, but when the call came to work with Joe, well he's the best on the planet,"
"I was invited down to work with Joe for five days and I've enjoyed every minute. This has been a fantastic opportunity for me.
"I can see why he's the champ now. Joe punches hard and fast''
Nicky Piper ''Calzaghe can punch very hard''
Tony Booth ''I started out with the Ingles. I used to do a lot of body sparring with the likes of Bomber Graham, Johnny Nelson and Naseem Hamed. Nelson never had any bottle: he used to nick fights running away. But Naz was ****ing brilliant - so elusive and he hit really hard. Even when he were just 15, he told my uncle to get his autograph 'cos he were going to be a superstar.
Nigel Benn used me seven times over in Tenerife, including for the Gerald McClellan fight. I had a big bet, three figures, on McClellan to win in the first round at about 10-1. And he would've if the ref hadn't kept interrupting. Nige and me would spar half-an-hour a day, then both go out on the ****. We always had a headguard and 16 oz gloves and often I'd outjab him. Nigel weren't a liberty-taker.
But the best I've been inside the ring with was Joe Calzaghe in sparring. Beforehand, I thought he were quite boring to watch and looked as if he slapped but, **** me, he punches hard. If he slapped, Bernard Hopkins would've stood toe-to-toe with Joe, but he got on his bike, didn't he? If Joe and Nigel had fought, I think Joe would have been able to take the pain and would've ended up hurting Nigel, bit like Michael Watson did.''
You win, not reading all that BS!
how is it obvious? i keep posting videos of him flailing around like a dead fish from his early fights. he never adjusted anything. thats called a lie.
when was this though? in sparring or something?
i've seen paulie malignaggi knock down opponents so i'm not sure thats the bets indicator of power.

Most of Calzaghe's "knockouts" were early stoppages on slap flurries. He had very quick hands but he never knocked out any great opposition. He did slap the **** out of Lacy and outboxed a prime Kessler which was very impressive.
Known for his Handspeed for sure but "POWER" absolutely NOT, did he have "SOME" yeah...VS Inferior Competition absolutelyObviously he adjusted his punching technique once he started breaking his hands and yeah we know he started out looking like a flashy amateur not a KO artist, but for awhile he had power in both hands, just ask Enzo Maccarinelli his longtime sparring partner, or Chris Eubank who Joe put on his back in the opening round, and many many others.
