I dunno, maybe I'm depressed or something, but coming out of the gym this morning, I just got thinking about the ideals of boxing, and how we fall so short of achieving those ideals.
This is like a romantic post and totally unrealistic.
Most boxers dont have other jobs besides boxing...boxing just doesnt allow you to do other things - it's too time consuming.
So that means boxers dont have health insurance, retirement accounts, PTO, or short/long-term disability.
Oh, and boxers can literally die on a shift at work...they can also suffer lingering injuries or develop conditions like Parkinsons.
So, yes, boxers fight for MONEY...that's why they call it PRIZEfighting.
The real issue is how many hands are in the pot...sanctioning bodies with independent rankings...its a joke and a cash grab. Now there's a 5th sanctioning belt. How can you have FIVE DIFFERENT "champs" at the same weight class. It don't make no sense.
Remove all sanctioning bodies. Make just The Ring belt. Now the fights you WANT to happen will be easy as only one person can claim "champ" status...no more prima donna stuff...you're either champ or you're not.
Easy as that.
not gonna lie, I am quite Romantic, reading Colin Wilson's The Outsider at the moment
What annoys me greatly is the lack of sportmanship in boxing, among fans too. And I dont mean the amount of **** that the keyboard warriors talk, but the thinking among many people that dirty tactics are OK if you can use them without referee seeing etc. Many people just think it as a gameplan and say that its referee's fault if he isn't doing anything, but that just punishes fair fighters just because of incompetent refs. I hate seeing headbutts thrown on purpose, low blows, all that. Should be penalized more easily in my opinion. I get that many fighters dont get along and all though I dont give a **** about some fight selling trash talk, real or not (most of the time its just to sell the fight since many people buy it), but intentional rule breaking is just a ***** move. Accidents happen, but when you break the rules, time after time and on purpose, you should get DQ. In some matches, some fighters have gotten through with some real bull****.
I am not asking fighters to be friends together but at least they could obey the rules. Many people forget it, but boxing is a sport, not a street fight.

Thank you Floyd Mayweather.
That whole zero statement came out to discredit T.B.E. & now you dudes are using it to support that discredit. Not many fighters have or end with a zero on the loss column so ya'll can kill that whole zero talk to discredt him just like that whole "best of this generation" talk too cuz that is the same thing being used to discredit Floyd as T.B.E. cuz he IS T.B.E.
:yeah:
:yeah:
:yeah:u
:yeah: TBE always waited to fight fighters in decline fought Manny after being knock out fought Mosley and Oscar when they were had been the public deserved Manny vs Floyd in 09 not in 2015 Or fighting Mosley 5 years before their fight
To a degree yes, but it's more of a knock of this type of fan speaking with some kind of authority that he is above other fans and knows more and feeling that they are qualified to discuss all-time great ratings when they don't even know the field. Instead just dismissing them as "bums" because they've never heard of them and trying to bring down their achievements (which they don't know) and/or just tell others they don't know these era's or fighters either just to feel better about themselves. Also, these "fans" openly admit to watching certain fights dozens of times so they aren't that put off by knowing the outcome. They simply only harbor an interest in a handful of boxers so they are boxer fans not boxing fans.
So, yes. Fake fan. Hardcore fanboy of a particular fighter but hardly a fan of the sport. Most of them aren't even real fans of their fighter since if they were they'd go to watch these fights and fighters live which they have admitted to me that haven't
It appears as if you are saying rewatching certain fights makes you a fan, even if you do it more than once, but rewatching other fights doesn't. That is extremely biased.
You seem mad because he took shots at you so you are labeling him a fake fan out of anger.
I just don't think there is only one way to be a true fan. While I agree fans should know something about the sport's history, not knowing Napoles or Griffith fought surely doesn't disqualify you from being a true fan.
Now if you want to say he is stupid for not even checking Google-well then you might have a valid point.
You left out something very important. A fighters health especially in the long run. Floyd laid out the blue print, fight twice a year, make a ton of money, and dont get hit.
You seriously question whether a fan is real based on if they watch historical fights on DVD? Some people just don't choose to watch old fights because they already know the outcome.
You are making way too much of him not knowing the exact period when these guys fought and using that as a measure of whether he is a real fan or not.
Loving the sport isn't just based on answering questions properly.

It's astonishing really just how little a lot of these "fans" who label true fans "casuals" know. Even Larry who I don't particularly mind, he seems like a nice enough man with a passion for the sport didn't know that Willie Pep was a world champion. It's the guys like Mcdonalds who think Napoles and Griffith were 30's fighters and that 2007 to now is the best era ever and anything prior to him becoming interested in boxing (mainly Mayweather and Pacquaio) sucked because he doesn't know them or has never cared to try and even research them or watch any of the fights. Those are the lame fans that make boxing fans look bad. Fake fans that have never bothered to go further than boxrec or wikipedia and use youtube just to watch their idols fights for the 100th time rather than watch some truly great, historical fighters from other era's let alone actually try and hunt down rare content.

Man, thanks for this, great post. I will do well to remember the grass-roots of boxing, the small clubs that turn boys into men, and the communities that exist around them. There are some real diamonds around, people who give of their time to coach, just 'cos they love the sport so much. This side of things is very inspiring. Obviously there's corruption in the amateurs too, but what can you do. Heart-breaking to see a kid get a sh#t decision sometimes; but that's life.
Boxing fans can be terrible sometimes, I remember one guy who started this conversation, watching the boxing together, 'Who was the most powerful puncher ever?', I said you gotta put Julian Jackson in there, and he replied, 'Who?' ... He'd been watching the boxing for years, smh. Anyway, yeah, I shall now cease with my b#tchy-whiney-mood haha

this basically applies to everything in the entire world
Boxing will never be as good as it was in generations prior. Look at a rankings and a resume from a fighter in the 60's and see the difference in resume's, especially the depth. The fighters simply earn more money which they totally deserve so they don't have to fight as much which is totally logical and good for them it decreases a lack of brain damage. The result of that is that there are far less "complete" boxers these days which is in part due to lack of action, lack of quality hungry fighters, training not being as good etc; which results in less quality fighters and lesser action for the most part which results in less general public interest for the average events. There's mega events now but they are for casuals which don't show up or care about fights like this weekends for example. A lot of "fans" of this ilk post here. I'd say a quarter, perhaps more don't know what fights are happening this weekend or next and certainly harbor little to no interest in watching them despite them being talented elite fighters.
Real boxing does exist it's just less people care about it. There casuals to hardcore ratio is bigger than ever and obviously most boxing fans are fanboys not real fans and this board is a microcosm of that. I was at Marquez-Pacquaio II and a Pacquaio fan asked me "do you think Manny will fight southpaw again tonight?' and at Marquez-Pacquaio III after the fight in the lobby there was a grown man in his 40's I'd assume wearing a Mayweather hat and he was almost in tears and you could hear it in his voice "Mar-keys won the fight! Mar-keys was robbed" and I said I agreed and asked how he scored it and he said to me he didn't see the fight. Those two people probably post here and reflect the level of fanboyism we have in the sport and those fanboys are the type that care more about the fighters purses and such things. Like the fighters are going to give them money (they won't) or that they'll hang out with them (they won't).
Over time the majority of boxing fans picked sides just liked politics and they just get caught up in that so much that it kills their general enthusiasm and passion for the game but it doesn't stop them saying they are the biggest and best fan who knows the most about the sport and everyone who doesn't agree is a "casual" when they are the definition of casual. Just started watching the sport when a certain guy was at the top and only takes interest in a handful of fighters and that is because they mainly associate it with the man they lust over than the actual sport.
There's hardcore fans out there. Fans who watch all the fights, attend the events, support the sport, respect it's history but we are more and more becoming extinct as you can see by this board. Fake fans, casuals and fanboys make up most of boxing's online fan base and are the average fan meaning we have the worst fans of all sports whereas the morons I've encountered who are paying customers who go to the fights is very limited to like the two idiots I referenced above. Well one idiot because one of them didn't even pay to go watch.

Boxing used to have manly fans, now we have fans like Robbie Barrett who take it up the arse.
LOL, he's definitely one of the poster boys for the type of "fan" I described. Same for mcdonalds who told me I (also) didn't know who Jose Napoles is (like him) and then he tried to explain that he was a 1930's bum LOL.
Boxing has had some terrible fan bases. Tyson loons, Roy Jones fans the type of fans that insist you must call them goat or you deserve to die and don't know the sport. Trinidad fans were insane and I am a huge Tito fan but felt ashamed seeing how bad some were. Joshua and Wilder fans are bad now so are Canelo and GGG fans but the worst we've ever seen by far as Pacquaio fans and the worst is Floyd fans. Both took stupid and ignorant to the next level and have decided how they are going to view the sport and who to root for moving forward based on the mean things the other fan base said about their celebrity crush.

I think its when fans argue over it that it becomes annoying. I understand promoters lying and trying to do whats best for their fighters financially wise but when fans take those antics and use them for bragging rites and as reasons not to demand the best fights as if they are getting a cut of the money it becomes too much. some fans are happy seeing their fighter get rich so they can brag on their money instead of seeing them fight the best!
Sometimes when posters talk about money, it's usually to support their point about which fighters are more popular. The guy who can't refute that then cries about the fan being "only about money", etc etc.
Take Floyd. You will have a poster state fans think floyd is boring. In response, a poster may point out Floyd has sold x amount of PPV's and made y amount of dollars to refute this point. Then the first poster responds "I don't care about money etc" and decides the 2nd poster is "a fan of money etc etc.
Just an example. there are others with other fighters as you know.
It's called prizefighting. Why are you surprised that the sport is about things associated with money?
You can't get that social media is used to build a profile, which attracts fans, which increases the amount of the prize you fight for?

yeah and sadly fans are more about these things than actual promoters. this site has been ruined by that. its like fans are hiding behind poilitcs, money, instagram followers, bragging on how much popular their fighter is, etc instead of demanding the best fights. fans now protect diva behavior to have bragging rights.... u can have a great fight and fans will sit and argue about how many people were in the arena and how nobody watched it. and on top of all that there is this race issue that some force on others because its an issue they have going on inside themselves... Its getting to be too much

Robbie is okay, the only thing I can disagree with him was the whole Aj ducking 50 million after asking for it thing....LMMFAO! Aj DID duck.:burnout:
