Is GGG past his prime? Let's look at video evidence comparing each of his punches

To be fair, Canelo TOOK lil'G's prime AND his soul in that first fight. He took an uppercut from hell and he has never been the same since. Brook gave him one too

I honestly think GGG was shocked by Canelo's speed, slickness and movement. Must of thrown him off big time, especially in the first few rounds. I think he will be much better prepared this time. Hopefully he has figured out how to time Canelo with his right hand because every time he threw it, he just missed as Canelo was evasive. No doubt if he lands it clean, Ginger will be sleeping early in Las Vegas.

I expect a tight fight, like last time, but imagine if we were to see those first few rds of the first fight version of GGG the whole fight Saturday? It will be a much wider fight if that happens. Not saying it will. I wouldn't bet on it. But I believe its a possible outcome here if that last Canelo beginning was a sign of things to come. Randomly I'm also not sure what to make of GGG's self-hyped up attitude for this fight. He's been a fairly stoic type cat he's whole run. Idk that I like that type of cat to be all hyped up & wanting revenge & all these emotional things running through his veins. Idk if that means he's gonna use up too much energy early in the fight & perhaps gas out early or be more risk taking for no good reason. Maybe he goes old school Russian gangster on Canelo & goes super stoic & business-like once they hit the ring & all these emotions he's never shown much of in the past all go away idk. But him being less stoic & more emotional this time out has me questioning how that could impact his performance Saturday. And also I kinda feel that way with Canelo to for full disclosure cuz they are saying they flipped up his whole thing upside down so idk wtf that means, but when you get to the highest point of this sport doing a, b & c it almost always is a bad idea to start doing x, y & z in your biggest fight. Not to say it never works out or anything. Well said. And good observations. Your pretty much spot on. This will either help drive GGG to a career defining win or its going to back fire. Both have alot riding on this fight. I loved the last fight and am certain their will be some fireworks esp. early on. Two great boxers putting it all out their for us fans.

I think he just pushes forward these days. I think he’s less refined than he used to be. But until he loses who can say he needs to do more than that.

To GGG's credit he started turning things around after those first few rounds, but if he still looked very un-GGG-like in those first couple rds & I've never seen him look that worn/old/out of it. I think its a possibility we see something similar in this fight cuz Canelo is a much more adaptable fighter & if he gots his stamina improved to fight 3mins of each rd I think its possible that Byrd card last time out could be a legit score this time out. Possible not probable for the fanboys who might wanna freak out over my last remark with their dummy ass. Firstly, I am a massive GGG fan - he is my favorite fighter. I do agree with you though. I thought GGG won this fight 8-4 / 7-5 but it was definitely the worst he ever looked. He was slow, sloppy, wild and his body punching/ring cutting abilities were absent. This was very strange. Even though the Jacobs fight was close, GGG was still technically sound and fought well. Jacobs was just a great challenger. In my opinion, part of it has do with the skill of Canelo but something was off with that fight. Even the Vanes fight, he looked pretty good. It could of just been an off night for GGG. I fully expect him to come out and show us the GGG we used to know. A sharp solid jab, regular body punches, left hooks and a much better job at cutting off the ring.

Whether the big occasion and bright lights or maybe the build up to the fight or quite possibly the age factor but certainly he lacked a step. We will all see the truth this weekend. For me i hope GGG succeeds but I really can only see Canelo winning a tight fight.

Of course he is past his prime. He started to deteriorate after David Lemieux fight. However, in saying that, he is still an elite fighter and the number one Middleweight in the world. Even a 36 year old GGG can still probably beat all top middleweights and contenders as we speak.

Danny Jacobs? He had nothing to gain by doing that. Dude has a knockout loss and was a lesser name... Canelo “waited” 4 whole fights...two of those four were big fights (Chavez and Cotto), one was a title fight at 54.. and of those 4 only one was over 15. Yawn. Jacobs was ordered to fight him by WBA because he was regular champ. Something Sturm paid WBA off for. Golovkin was calling out big names for almost a decade. The dude gave up ALL the advantages against Canelo, and was on the record multiple times saying he'll give up advantages for a big fight. He called out Floyd at 154. He called out Cotto at 154. He wanted to fight both Froch and Ward at 168. He called out Canelo at 154, before getting a mandatory shot. Get that bull**** out of here. I absolutely blame all of those guys for ducking Golovkin, or rather rightly deeming him high risk / low reward. The only guy I don't blame for ducking Golovkin was Martinez, and that's because Martinez was shot to sht by that time. It wouldn't be pretty or fun. And no, the world doesn't owe Golovkin anything. He dumbed down and simplified his style compared to his amateur days. Started relying on power punches more The way he fought Canelo (and Lemieux and Jacobs) showed intelligence, not loading up on power. Boxing technique and ring IQ are two different things. I do agree that Golovkin has a rather basic technical approach. That doesn't take away from his ring IQ though. The fact that he known how to work within that limited repertoire by being measured and consistent, and still beat a guy who is a better boxer without just using force, said a lot about his ring IQ. While I do think Canelo looks stronger, faster, and slicker, GG was simply smarter. I was really impressed by that.

Don't hold your breath. GGG isn't moving up to 168 at age 36 and beyond. But I get where you stand on Golovkin. And yes, overstating and inflating an opposing point of view (GGG is a "modern legend!") so you can shoot it down more easily (no he isn't! Jeez that's crazy!) is a straw man argument. Floyd is a modern legend. Pacquaio is a modern legend. Golovkin is a dominant fighter in an era of weak middleweights. If he's truly got the power and it hasn't just been weak opposition folding, then I think he's going to hold up fine. GG fans raged on me when I pointed out the fact that they're abandoning him and it's sad to see the frequent preemptive excuses coming out of people here. If he's truly a modern legend he's going to handle Canelo. Even at 35 GG showed fantastic stamina and he also showed something he didn't have 10 years ago; tremendous ring smarts. That's what made the difference for me in the first fight, Golovkin fought smarter. They both have a feel for each other now and the truth will come out. May the best man win. This sounds like a straw man argument. Do many credible boxing people really think Golovkin is a "modern legend?" That's a bit much. I think he's a helluva fighter who's most definitely past his prime, but still viable. He could lose to Canelo -- probably by close decision -- and still have a distinguished (possibly HOF) career. Thirty-six is getting up there for a guy who eats punches with his face. That's not what a "strawman" argument is. What you just tried is though, by inferring things I never implied. I don't need to qualify whether the hardcore Golovkin fanbase here are credible posters, nor did I make any claims as to whether they were. There's a great number of people who have (aggressively) told me over the last few years how great Golovkin is. I'm not going to pretend they don't exist. As to whether they are credible or if I agree with them or not is besides the point. There's a lot of them so I'll respect that fact and not discredit them as a whole. I don't see him leaving much legacy if he loses this because his resume is a list of cats who never went on to accomplish much of anything. In GGs prime, the best fighters in the division flat out avoided him. The fact that he was denied a Canelo victory the first time is a real shame. Fighter is in mid 30s. Other high caliber fighters in his division finally willing to fight him. Fights are closer in scoring than his previous 5 years where he was younger and having trouble getting the champions to fight him. What exactly is the point of this thread?

Sure, he’s aged. As the person above said. We get it. Coincidentally starts looking “human” when he’s fighting the best fighters he’s ever fought. Not the first time we’ve seen guys look different when the competition hits back and makes you miss/think. Ggg is no spring chicken though...that much is true. He’s not shot though or anywhere near. Or perhaps those 'best fighters he's ever fought' are fighting him because he's past his prime?

I will just watch film of his past fights. That's much easier and more entertaining.

If so, that would make GGG-Canelo just the latest in a long run of "superfights" that was made far past its "best by" date either due to the ducking of one fighter, or due to the major business interests in boxing wanting to wait until one fighter declines in order to ensure the one they want to win is able to do just that. This trend ruins all competitive integrity of the sport. It ruins fighters' legacies, and it takes all the hope and excitement of boxing fans and stomps all over it, leading to extremely disappointing, anti-climatic "superfights" stained, seemingly, by corruption, one after the other, disenfranchising hardcore boxing fans and turning casual sports fans off of boxing for good. It ruins the fight, it stalls out and ruins careers, it drives fans away and in so doing, keeps boxing's mid-to-long-term financial potential forever capped to the ground floor, but they keep doing it anyway to protect their short term interests and, in other cases, seemingly to feed their biases towards American boxers, "they" being the boxing establishment in the U.S. GGG-Canelo was supposed to be the exception, the antidote. It was supposed to be boxing making up for Mayweather-Pacquiao. That matchup was ruined by waiting too long, so GGG-Canelo was supposed to be different. Left uppercut, straight right, overhand right, all the same in his prime fights. But in his fights now, such as vs Canelo, you see something very different.Boxers are strongest and fastest at age 24 to age 29 and they all start to slow down after that including Hopkins. How much they slow down each year varies a lot from man to man and how they take care of themselves as well. GGG is 36 so he is many years past prime. I think he is still the best middleweight in the world. We will see how much he has slowed down this coming Saturday night. I am picking GGG to win.
