I just heard this on a credible boxing live stream but I need to find the YouTube video. Just putting this thread out here before I find it.
EDIT:
yammy25 found the video
Timestamped.
But you have to understand the different stages showtime and DAZN are in. Showtime is an established cable network, they live off advertising and subscriptions. They have to run a proper PnL, as it's part of a CBS corp.
DAZN is a funded company - They push money into the company NOW for gains LATER. There's a very big difference in this.
We all know american PPV money is dead for fighters like spence and mikey garcia. even the UFC has problems with PPV. Floyd Mayweather and Conor Mcgregor are the only PPV fighters in America right now.
and one of them is retired.
So if Wilder and Fury want 10million each which you'd imagine they do at least, they'll have to put it on dual ppv in UK and US. Currently the UK is a much better market to do a PPV, but how many will buy a fury fight at 6am in the morning? a few hundred thousand at best?
And Wilder vs Fury does.. 350k buys at best in the US?
The maths just don't add up for the network. And DAZN are right now in the same phase as PBC were when they came on the scene, except DAZN have a lot more funding and are not paying for air time, so the business model is fundamentally better especially as they have other sports than PBC i.e. more target audiences.
We will see how it plays out. What is this fox deal? I'm not too familiar with it.
I don't think it's beyond imaginable that DAZN get a mikey garcia or errol spence or that fight on DAZN in the next 6-12 months.
If Wilder vs Fury is priced at $70 bucks and does 350k buys? That would get them 10+ million each. It will do according to Hearn good numbers in the UK so that's additional 5-6 million in revenue. Then the live gate of 4-5 million plus international revenue? That gets it close to 25 million in revenue. 60/40 split for Wilder and he makes 15 million while Fury makes 10 million.
Spence is never leaving Haymon. Hearn will be going hard after Garcia, but he knows all his big opponents are at SHO or possibly ESPN in Crawford and Lomachenko.
Epic Sports would take whatever Hearn bids, and literally shove it in his face...
When will he learn? He literally can't get a card in NY. You'd think the dude would just shut his trap at some point.
That's where FOX comes in. So whatever budget SHO has, which is rumored to be around $50 million, FOX will likely have something similar or possibly a bit more. So that along with SHO and occasional PPVs will still be enough to keep the big names.
And this stuff about the money being dried up is hilarious. SHO puts on a crazy beginning of the year schedule out every year and then takes it easy during college football season and then tries to end strong. They will still have enough to put on fights like LSC/GRJ, Thurman's return, Hurd's return, etc. But even if it was the beginning of the year, Fury vs Wilder was always going to be on PPV. If both want 10+ million, then NO network even DAZN will be able to pay that. So that was PPV regardless. Spence vs Garcia is another fight due to how much both will want that will be on PPV. Now, DAZN would be able to afford this type of fight, but do you think they want this fight in front of AT BEST 100,000 subscribers? You take this type of fight so the winner takes the next step to stardom. So you may say well if they fight on PPV, they will only generate 100-200k buys anyways. Sure, but they would get more promotion on SHO leading up to the fight and then the fight would re-air the following week.
Will Hearn eventually get a big name? Maybe, but it is clear it won't be anytime soon.

I never said he is following the same model. But ESPN got a very solid deal by all accounts.
I'm not really getting you on the last part. Who isn't budging for 50 million?
Boxing on average doesn't provide the ratings UFC does. Hence why they won't get a similar deal to the one UFC had. And UFC has 550 fighters in their organization and need more dates to keep them busy. Haymon while having a lot of fighters, does not have nearly as many and has another platform in SHO.
But lets see when the details come out. Maybe they did get something crazy like 70-80 million per year. I just don't see it with them only having six or so featured cards per year.
agreed. necessity can make networks do crazy things though.
However Al definitely wont be looking at their deal as a model for his. fox sports has much space to cover in order to catch espn. Getting a better boxing stable is a major step in beating them content wise. also fox saw some revenue from maymac their not budging for 50 mil

Oh no, ESPN DOES have to fill space with their app. They need as much content as possible. There is a reason they just got rights to the Italian futbol league. Which DAZN needed to go hard after. But back to ESPN and ESPN+, they will be going hard after these leagues worldwide. But space aside, do you think Top Rank got a similar deal to the one UFC got yes or no?

HELLLLL NO. Top rank got a 360 deal espn is touching every piece of revenue that top rank is getting. However one part about there deal that interest me in how is top rank providing fights from other promoters? such as frank warren and lou dibella
And will these guys have the ability to provide fights for AL with FOX
ESPN isn't in the same position as fox. They don't need to fill space. Also with Fox getting billions from Disney soon I don't see why haymon/anyone wouldn't charge a little extra.

Well, if it is rumored they will put on 6-8 big shows, then plus lower level cards on FS1, that sounds about right. I don't think they will be getting as many dates as the UFC got. And the UFC is just a flat out bigger organization then the PBC or boxing in general. You think Top Rank got the same type of deal UFC just got with ESPN+? No way.

Why do you think the fox deal is only for 50 million? I would think theyd get the same amount as the UFC

It’s pretty much game over once the FOX deal goes through.
Of course it is :lol1:
Showtime has promised them the same fees via PPV. As soon as that dries up which will be quick, the fighters will look for the most money.
Thinking fighters who generally earn between 1-2mil will give away 3-4mil because of "profile" and "loyalty" is so far out there it's not even funny.
Go watch Angel Garcia. He sums it up.

All these people dissing Hearn saying he wants to promote wilder etc...if you're a wilder fan, you should want that. Hearn would do a much better job than currently is being done with wilder, and the aj fight would happen and be massive.
Dude, Wilder would then be fighting in front of a limited audience. It makes no sense for him or any other star to do that. If ESPN+ barely has 200k subscribers, how many do you think a start up streaming service with no other top sport will have? This isn't rocket science. Now, you can say if Wilder fights a lot of people will use their free trial on, but it will still not be nearly as same and him fighting on SHO.
Lets see how Hearn promotes in America. He's had three fights with Jacobs on HBO and I don't think his profile has risen one bit. All you could say is he has been more active. And HBO has 30 million subscribers.
I just don't get why you guys keep buying into Hearn's propaganda that Wilder can't sell or is being promoted terribly. Clearly he is one of the biggest names stateside and just did great numbers on SHO. And IMO, will end up doing better numbers on PPV vs Fury than folks think.
Broner is making around a million per fight. Hearn knows exactly what he making.
No, no he's not. Mikey Garcia's reported purse for Easter was 1 million and according to Hearn, he made around 3 million for the fight. Check by other thread I made on Al Haymon's side checks.

Ehh no. Here in the US, guys like Arum know what’s going on and what it’ll take financially to poach these guys. Yet they still haven’t been successful.
Does money play a part? Sure. But rather than listen to Angel Garcia, I advise you to listen to Jermall Charlo when he was asked about DAZN and said specifically, it’s NOT as simple as just getting more money. They don’t want to be seen as commodities anymore and they aren’t interested in signing any multi-fight deal. Hearn, the douchebag that he is, just doesn’t get it. And thus...Vargas-Dulorme.

You think it’s all about the money? If so, why haven’t more fighters signed to DAZN? Let your puny brain wrap your head around that.
