Respect to Kovalev

Kovalev is (was?) one of the most exciting fighters of the present era. He was colourful, entertaing, and never ducked a challenge. Boxing needs more men like the Krusher.

Yeah, I'm not buying it. He talked about beating up black people on the streets in Russia when he fought Sillakh. He had the banana photo aimed at Stevenson. I don't need an interpreter to to tell me he has some racist tendencies. This. I’ve enjoyed watching him get his arse kicked lately. Hope he keeps fighting.

I agree. He will go down in history as one of the better light heavyweight champions. He might be done at the top level at 35 but than doesn't make his many good wins and KOs disappear. He had a damn good run as a feared world champion.

Yeah Kovalev has experienced some skullduggary in the ring but in this case he was totally hoodwinked by Alvarez's crazed but actually intimidated ploys. Then in the ring Alvarez continued this ploy with just enough hits to the body to keep Kovalev complacent and off guard against that sudden massive overhand right

and no one seems to think that he was caught and did not try to survive the round by holding, which would have been the smart thing to do at the time, he kept trying to fight. He was ahead on all cards. First real loss he’s had in my opinion. True. Decisive win for Alvarez. Kudos to him.

Respect to K as a fighter. He is a very good fighter and you don’t beat him without being good. I feel he just got beat by maybe the best fighter he has faced ever at 175lbs. That isn’t to say Alvarez is the best P4P fighter. K is always dangerous with his power. His power in my opinion is what won him the first Ward fight (in my book which is the only one I count).

Somebody has to lose and it’s a sad thing. Alvarez had a lot riding on that fight too, maybe more. I hope Kovalev has been smart with his money

It is a loss. But let;s not overlook the fact that Kovalev was actually winning decisively before that KO. It wasnt Pac-Barrera I unexpected domination. Um no he was’t winning that fight decisively. It was a close fight and yes he had taken the momentum but Alvarez upped up his attack and took over.

I don't see the Bivol or Beterbiev fights ever happening now which is a shame

I had a feeling Alvarez was going to be a tough fight but I thought Kovalev would pull it off especially with the 14 month layoff. Kova deserves respect but he's not the fighter he once was, his chin is gone, took too many shots in his career.

Agreed. Very good fighter at his best and i still feel he should have an official win over Ward. No matter who you felt won that, he was neck and neck with with one of the very best of a generation at that point. Ward had him figured out by the 2nd fight, with or without the low blows. That's what separates real great fighter from the very good but Kovalev was an excellent fighter at his best. I think he relied on that fearsome reputation and feeling of invincibility. As soon as he lost that, it was over for him. Besides, he's 35 now. Not everyone can be Hopkins. He's at an age where you would really expect him to be on the way to being done at the top level.
