Marquez is 1 of my favorites ever but after Saturday, I truly think Garcia is above Marquez in the skill department, main reason is footwork. Everything else as far as boxing skill is about even.
Thoughts?
I hate fantasy fight debates because.. well "fantasy".
but if i had to pick in this matchup I'll pick JMM to stop Mikey late.
I don't even think Mikey is as good as Barrera.
Not a chance IMO. His offense is far more predictable and repetitive than Marquez'. Marquez had amazing punch selection and combinations whereas Mikey is far more plodding and basic. His right hand is slow but I think he has a better left hook than Marquez. Both are accurate but Marquez is sharper and did it against a much higher caliber and variety of styles. Garcia has been very selective with his opposition.
Marquez had excellent use of combination punches and counter punches. Garcia is not near that level and as far as feet Marquez had far the better footwork too.
Agreed on all points. I will point out though that defensively, Garcia may have the edge because his hands are always protecting his chin whereas JMM got dropped a bunch of times.
Marquez was a better boxer. Great offensive skills, amazing counter punching an those combinations...he was able to throw 4, 5, 6 punches with an exceptional fluidity. And he was one of the few that I've seen capable of throwing such complex combinations while going backwards.
All this plus his warrior attitude made him a joy to watch.
Legend!
Mikey has followed the Adrien Broner model to a T. Cherry pick your way to becoming a 4 division champion while facing no elite opposition.
Garcia has never fought the #1 fighter or #2 fighter(If Garcia was ranked first) in any weight class he has campaigned his entire career.
He fought everybody that was anybody, over rated my ass JMM is one of the greatest counter punches in history, so text book correct and a heart the size of a Racehorse.
Over rated lol you people must have just started following this sport.
Great post ..
You gotta understand that majority of the posters on here are noobs.. skinny jeans era
That’s why I dont talk serious boxing here.

No way!
Look how Marquez KOd Pac-Man. Could Garcia KO a prime pac??????
Quite a bit. I followed his career and saw him live a dozen or so times. Also been in his training camp and saw him work from the ring apron.
Mayweather was the only one who outboxed him. When he fought Bradley he was 40 and way above his better weights.
Marquez sometimes had problems with movement (Wheeler is a guy who gave him problems in an earlier fight) because he was often very patient and is a natural counter puncher. Even the John and Norwood robberies wasn’t so much a case of being outboxed in spells it was the movement and defensive style that made those fairly close.
Get your head out your ass and judging by your portrayal of Marquez as basically just a blood and guts fighter Id say wtf do you know?
Mikey is too stationary and slow on his feet not to mention predictable. He’d feed into Marquez. It’s a great opponent for him.
You're only seeing Garcia as he is now, he was much more fluid on his feet than Marquez in his prime, a better puncher, a better jab, better defense and most importantly he was and is just more technical than Marquez. Right now he's basically a physical slob and just getting by with his fundamental and technical skills, Marquez on the other hand is such a technical beast he's been knocked down about 10 times, wobbled just as many and eats punches like candy, literally all his career, just less in his prime because he had his feet to keep him out of range, that's basically no different than roy jones except Marquez has a chin. Why does this happen to him? Because he's so technical he has an open guard (his hands are in the air, you can basically get through with anything, hooks esspecially get in easy), his only defenses are keeping out of range, moving his head (not great neither, he's always been stiff) or parrying, mainly with his hands, this is exactly why if you just get in range and sneak in potshots there's not much he can do, this is essentially what happens anytime someone doesnt just feed Marquez endless aggression, it's not the movement, it's enough pressure for him to get off his combo's and his problem isnt "oh he's just so patient and smart, so when a guy doesnt feed him offense he just turns into a statue" it's he's not good enough to create an offense, his offensive jab isnt good enough, his sliding in and out isnt good enough or hell, a different style, if he had he would have had a much easier time with these guys, because norwood and bradley stood right in front of him, if Marquez can't fight on the backfoot he basically suks *** because there goes most of his counter-punching on people regaining their balance and his defense is exploited because he doesnt have much of a defense unless he's keeping range. That open guard even gets him in trouble inside, why can't this guy change his guard, he seriously only has a single stance/guard and style wow, technical genius. I see you're from the dumbassess school of thought that being a counter-puncher and having some boring fights means you're a technical savant, but it doesn't. The smartest thing Marquez does is feint the mixup of the body and head, but for all I know he can only do that because of Beristeins drills. Marquez is a great student, doesn't clinch, doesn't panic, he's almost like a machine how he always stays in his style, it's weird as fuk, but it explains his indomitable will.
The people saying Marquez is a more Fluid puncher and has a more varried offense, that's absolutely true, but that doesnt mean Marquez is better technically lol, Marquez is undoubtedly a better combination puncher, Garcia is mainly a 1-2 guy, but you know why he gets away with it? Because he's smart, and he's got his fundamentals in tight, Floyd's offense also consisted mainly of a straight right in a lot of fights.
Kid, I made several statements in the post. I know severe inbreeding has left you at a disadvantage but when you refuse to specify which part of the post you were talking about, I can't help you.
It's like when your mom takes you to McDonald's and you point at the colorful pictures on the wall and say, "That one". You gotta be specific honey.
I wasn't asking. I was telling you. The answer is nobody.
Damn you are such a snob. You act like nobody knows boxing as well as you do. Mikey has good fundamentals, we all know that but is he close to Marquez in skill? no way.
Yeah I mean also part of the reason Mikey is able to still be unbeaten and be as dominant is that he’s had a lot of say in who he fights. He’s generally steered away from defense minded boxers or movers. It’s not like he’s taken chances or has a stellar list of opponents. I don’t think Mikey has ever fought an opponent the public demanded either.
You guys that don't understand the science and can't see what Mikey is doing should stop embarrassing yourselves by screaming it out loud.
Amazes me how many people can't see the way the guy controls his opponents with distance and footwork. All these goofs understand is big punches and aggressive body language. Learn the fundamentals and you'll see why Mikey is not only undefeated, but highly respected.

It’s clear Mikey is skilled and does a lot of subtle things in there. I think he has good positioning but slow feet and predictable/repetitive offense.
Mikey is highly respected but far less than what Marquez was would you not agree? So whilst your telling people they are dumb to not see Mikey as a phenomenal talent then surely you must be missing something regarding Marquez considering you call him overrated/rate him below Garcia?
Marquez fought at a much higher level. Garcia hasn’t even fought anybody as good as the version of Gainer or Medina that Marquez fought let alone the big Marquez fights.
lol no way. Marquez would beat the crap out of mickey hoecia. it's not even close. mickey hasn't even fought anyone on MAB level, let alone Marquez.
easter isn't even good and mickey hoecia couldn't even take him out after hurting him badly early in the fight. easter wouldn't even have lasted 5 with Marquez
Mikey has "incredible talent" but Marquez is overrated. wow...

Juan was really talented but a bit overrated by the fans. Mikey has not only incredible talent, but is really gifted in terms of boxing instinct. He measures distances like few I've ever seen.

Mikey is Broner without losses to date. Cherry picking, beating nobody elite and begging for people to respect him.
