I'm not a fan of fighters jabbing to the body. It rarely sets up a big shot and leaves you open to straight counters. Anyone agree? If not, who uses it well?
Andre Ward has the best jab to the body for me personally. I know Andre stopped Kovalev but Kovalev is a beast with it also. So friggin spiteful. Just couldn't out jab a Gold medalist.
Lennox Lewis used it to control the range fairly well & as a feint for his straight right. He set the precedent for how a super HW should fight. It's actually my favourite punch I made a thread about this in the history section.
This^. Ward created so many problems for his opponents with that body jab. It's problematic because you can't just ignore it. But, when you go to block or counter it, you leave yourself open. Either way, you lose. Granted, not everyone can implement it well. But, those who do can be extremely effective with it.
TS, if you think it rarely sets up a big shot, watch Andre Ward.
When I was actively sparring I would catch guys all the time with both the body jab and straight right to the body. People just don't expect it and it throws them off.
Great minds think alike lol. Posted a minute before mine.
Lol, we made the same points too
Basically what I've learned about the jab to the body is mostly from a youtube video. The guy who made the video was saying that it's an important punch and that it's not utilized as much as it should be.
Great Punch if used correctly, but it is used to get your opponent in a habit of Dropping his hands to anticipated Guarding it only to come BACK upstairs with something big when he doesn't expect it...

Leads to this as you can seen Khan Dropping BOTH of his hands Anticipating body shots while Canelo came high instead and BOOM...

Mayweather uses it well!
Jabbing to the body means you can feint to the body in order to land big shots upstairs. I think Maidana got Broner like this and scored a KD, if I remember correctly

It's risky, but Floyd used to do it very well. Saps the opponent's energy and keeps them guessing. You can disguise other punches with it, like how Maidana did to Broner. I'm sure Khan has a good body jab too.
