Saul Alvarez: I'll Drop To 150 For Floyd Mayweather Jr.
WBC junior middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (39-0-1, 29KOs) is willing to drop a few pounds to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. (42-0, 26KOs). Mayweather is the World Boxing Council's champion at 147-pounds. Alvarez has no problem facing Mayweather at a catch-weight of 150-pounds.
Last Saturday in Mexico City, Alvarez retained his title with a fifth round technical knockout of former champion Kermit Cintron.
After his win, Alvarez challenged Mayweather on national television. Mayweather is scheduled to fight on May 5th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Alvarez approached Oscar De La Hoya, President of Golden Boy Promotions, and requested a fight with Mayweather.
"It's what I want, the Mayweather fight. That's what we put on the table. I feel more mature and for that I am willing to go down to 150 pounds," said Canelo to Sal Rodriguez. "De la Hoya said he was going to pursue the Mayweather fight . We are ready for it. It's what people want, for me to fight someone like ."

and thats 2 lbs lower than 152 that they agreed upon
:dunce:
he also said that 2 years before they actually fought. so fights are negotiated on the basis of something a guy said 2 years before?
either way...good on canelo for making a concession to get the fight done and good on mayweather for fighting above his weight.

I don't need to defend it...it's simply the fair way to do a fight like that. Why should one guy have 100% of the advantage?
Why does anyone not ask for a cw for one fighter but asks for it with another? Why did Floyd fight cotto at 154, but try to make Canelo come to 147 then finally agree on a cw?

hahahaha wow look at you defending the catchweight.
so why didnt he need cws for froch and chavez?
thats hypocritical

well would a ward fight at 164 not have been between 154-168? fights are negotiated on a one off basis...not by blanket statement.

ok.....
did any of those fighters mention that no one wants to fight them and to get in the ring theyll fight anyone from 154-168 lbs?

except that's not an answer to...why is it unfair for 2 fighters in different divisions to meet in the middle? take all the hate/fanboy bs out of it.
Because one fighter is much better than the other two. I already explained it. If it makes you feel better Golovkin said in an interview that talks with Ward never got into serious negotiations. They were just talking back and forth. If there are titles involved I don't believe in catchweight fights. If two guys want to fight at a catchweight to make some money fine.
in a sense yes...but it would also have been a higher risk fight with more on the table. let's not act like no other fighters have ever taken different positions negotiating with different fighters.

Champions get exposed in the ring during a fight not in an interview after the fight. All I saw was GGG scoring a devastating KO over a guy who has never been knocked down before. If he ever loses a fight then he may have been exposed.
Before the Golovkin KO, Vanes had been knocked down twice. Ouma and Saul Roman both had him down in their losses to him.
hahaha...he never pursued fights with froch and chavez? even signed his name on a contract to fight chavez? that didnt happen
i know youll stand by your "but he never moved up so its not the same"...at least, in the end, youll always have that card to play idiotically
youre right though...he never moved up..just brought up guys from two classes below and fought jr mws and guys with 0 wins at MW(in his career defining legacy fight)!!!
it's still nothing like the situation you mentioned. I get that you hate ggg...but there's more than enough ammunition to use against him without having to fabricate straw man arguments.:lol1:
well that's not the same situation at all...when did ggg fight at 168? he's still fighting at 160...it's not like he even had plans to move up.

either way...what if ward went up and fought barrera and brand at 175 but then said "not kovalev...hes way better than those guys...gotta be 171 for him"?
well that's not the same situation at all...when did ggg fight at 168? he's still fighting at 160...it's not like he even had plans to move up.
It's not unfair. So why didn't the Triple Duck meet Kell Brook @ 154lbs?
idk...maybe ask ward why he didn't meet ggg at 164 and apply that reasoning to this situation.
depends who you believe I guess...

if memory serves me correct didnt canelo actually suggest the 152 first? i think he might have and floyd called him out on it and made him stick to his word.....canelo said he'd do it to get the fight

if ward planned on staying at 168, then what would have been wrong with facing kovalev at a cw? so, why did Floyd fight cotto at 154 and canelo at 152 if different fights didn't call for different negotiating positions? they tried to make canelo come all the way down to 147 at first...why not just take the fight at 154?

i love this excuse...its almost as good as all the other ones around...the many others
"ward too good...he better than froch and chavez so naturally my hero lil g didnt want a challenge"
imagine ward saying "hey kovalev meet me at 171"...imagine having to listening to all these whiney *****es out here
