OK. Given the lack of decent fights out of the US or Europe this weekend, we were going to leave doing a Pick 'em this week, but then it was came to my attention that there is in fact two world title fights in Japan on Sunday.
Sunday 15, April 2018
Arena, Yokohama, Kanagawa, Japan
promoter Teiken Promotions - Akihiko Honda
World Boxing Council World Flyweight Title
Daigo Higa 15 0 0 vs Cristofer Rosales 26 3 0
World Boxing Association World Middleweight Title
Ryota Murata 13 1 0 vs Emanuele Felice Blandamura 27 2 0
The Murata fight ain't really an issue, cos it's a secondary title and Blandamura ain't really anyone's idea of a quality opponent, however the Flyweight match-up is for the WBC title and matches the recognised #2 in the division with a top 10 opponent. My thinking is that if this fight had been in a different division and a different time zone we would have had no hesitation in including it as a pick 'em.... It may not be to everyone's taste, but if we really are boxing fans, perhaps we should give it a go?
Fellas,
Let’s skip this weekend please. Let’s keep it to major fights that are worth it. I almost feel like this is a way to mess everyone up, if anything. I appreciate the fact that you all want to keep rolling at a face pace but, let’s slow the roll this weekend please. 4/21 quadruple header is enough to keep er body happy! Lol
Well that was kind of the point of this thread - to find out if people thought it was worth it. By our normal criteria Higa vs Rosales absolutely qualifies being a title fight between a #2 and #9 fighter in their division. Simple fact is most people would have been happy to have a lower level fight if it'd been a US broadcast between fighters they knew though, so do we go for quality or popularity?
Seems like it's about 50/50 in this case.

OK. I think we left this one long enough. While a majority of the votes cast went in favour of making a pick 'em for this fight (17:13) the number of total votes cast in favour fell short of the 20 votes I had (a little arbitrarily but with some rationale) decided would indicate sufficient player interest to go ahead.
RESULT: No pick 'em for this week.
For future votes I'll propose a similar sort of set up, although the poll will be made public and a quorum figure of roughly 50% of active players will be required to validate the poll and around 33% (and a majority) to action any results.
I guess I'm a casual who started watching boxing at age 5, but their seems to be a lot of pickems for fighters I've never heard of or know nothing about.
It takes all sorts, man. Use your vote and make your voice heard if you ain't in favour... no one's trying to criticise anyone, we're just trying to find out what the players want.
The "No's" are catching up !
Indeed. And anyway the plan was not to do it unless the 'aye's reached 20 (and a majority of course). Gonna leave it another hour or two to see whether it shifts at all, but as of right now I don't think we've received a sufficient level of support.

lol.
I say it because, when I look at the tally, I see a lot of people aren't playing all the events. This makes it kinda meaningless to me, when you just have a few people consistently doing it. Having fights people aren't watching will make people even less inclined to participate.
This poll is of course going to get a majority of Yes's because a lot of people not interested in it aren't going to click on anything related to this fight, and this pickem will have an unfortunately low participation. :(
It's a tricky one - you are of course right that people who ain't heard of either of the fighters might well just not bother voting, this is why I kinda loosely set a minimum threshold for positive votes at 20 which is about a third the number of active players (about 60 or so each week). As it stands we got 28 votes and we're at 16 to 12, which for me isn't quite enough. As pointed out by Siablo above though, I really should have made the vote public so we could ensure we were getting the opinions of the regular players.
Bear in mind that this is an unusual occurrence, though. On the vast majority of weeks we've been able to find a fight which most people are interested in, and that is likely to continue. The only reason this fight was considered for this week is not because somehow we felt the need to put a fight up to fill the void - believe me I'd be more than happy to take a break - but because it was a legitimate relatively high level match-up. The chances of this situation arising again are in fact slim. I'd actually be surprised if it happens more than once or twice of the year (I'd expect it again for the traditional big Japanese end of year cards, when no one else is fighting, of course), so I shouldn't worry too much about the pick 'em being overun by the hardcore nerds.
Anyway. Let's see how the vote goes. I personally think it's a good idea, but I'm certainly not about trying to force through unpopular fights, just thought it was worth seeing how people felt about it.
Agreed. I mean, yeah, I'm a geek for boxing but I also have a life... this doesn't need to turn into Dungeons'n'Dragons or some super-complex Fantasy Football league, with hundreds of rules etc. Keep it simple, keep it fun
lol.

I fear that the pick em is going to become a thing that just a few nerds play if we include too many obscure fights

I fear that the pick em is going to become a thing that just a few nerds play if we include too many obscure fights. Definitely needs more fights than last year, but let's make sure they have at least one fairly well known boxer, so participation will stay up.
You reckon we got enough of a consensus yet? I was aiming for 20 yeses, as it is we got 16 yeses against 10 nos, total 26 votes... just shy of half the regular players (assuming the voters are regular players). Let's just hold off another few hours til all the 9 - 5 folk in the US have time to get their asses home and logged in.
Cool..............
Cool. So the Pick 'em should be put up tonight?
