I think Joahnys Argilagos defected recently, so he should be a force to reckon with when he turns up in the pros. Maybe too small for most people to care though. Cruiserweight Frank Sanchez defected a while ago too. He was slated to debut last year but I can't find any info on whether it actually happened
Yeah, it sucks. Argilagos is a tiny kid. I feel bad for him. No one will care to watch him fight.
These Cuban defectors have a hard road. It’s difficult enough to pursue a boxing career, but these guys have it especially bad. The cream of the crop have eager promoters ready to sign them (and possibly take advantage of them), but the lesser talents have to find a way to put food in their stomachs and a roof over their heads first. They’re not offered the benefits of their more talented brethren.
You’re a real fan the Cubans in the 70s-90s were elite as hell but they could never defect just like the Soviet’s.. would of loved to see both kill everyone in the game.
Thanks. Reality bites sometimes.
We’ll never know how some of those athletes would’ve done. They never got a chance. It goes on to this day with the Cubans.
Unless Robeisy Ramirez and De la Cruz decide to turn pro soon Cuban boxing is pretty much done right now
What weight is Robeisy?
Guy has serious skills.

Although I’m not a fan of Lara, I was hoping he’d stop the Cuban bleeding. We’re at a low now, and I don’t see a savior on the horizon. Ugas isn’t it. There are a couple of very young guys in the pros right now who really aren’t worth mentioning yet. The guys we’ve got that have championship potential are stuck on the island. It’s probably gonna be a couple of years before another Cuban makes some noise.

Every Cuban boxer is old and past their prime.
My thought precisely. Pretty much all the top Cuban ams who defected and turned Pro did so around 2008-9, and none of them were kids then (Rances was probably the youngest at 21) and most were well into their 20s. That's 10 years ago, man. Most of these guys are in their late 30s now.
Cuban boxing is DEAD! Bunch of loooooosers
It might be officially a loss. To me though a gallant effort like that is never a loss in my eyes. I would like to see them fight again.
