A fighter gets rocked, his legs turn to jello, he is stumbling around, and he tries to clutch hold of his attacker. Despite taking more punishment, the fighter manages to stay on his feet the entire round. Should that be a 10-8 round? Does a fighter not get rewarded at all for pure heart and determination?
Wilder was seriously hurt in the 7th, yet he somehow managed to stay upright the whole time. By making it a 10-8 round anyway, Wilder should have just taken a knee. This isn't about Wilder though, it is about boxing.
Why encourage fighters to take a knee whenever they get stunned? Should the ability to stay upright and take the best punches of your opponent be worth anything?
I understand your point but if a boxer takes a bad beating I will still score the round 10 to 8. The round Ortiz hurt Wilder and had him out on his feet was a round I might score 10 to 8.
You could equally argue that a flash knockdown shouldn’t be a 10-8? For instance round 5 Ortiz was set to win the round then wilder hit him hard right near the bell. Should that have been a 10-8?
Unless the rules change then everyone knows what they are. For the record I don’t know anyone who didn’t score that particular round a 10-8 so I think people thought it was one-sided enough to justify it.
there needs to be more 10-8 and 10-10 rounds in boxing. there can be a round where neither guy does much and then one where one guy gets rocked around the ring and badly hurt but they are the same? the judges are going to give all those low action rounds to the a-side guy. we already know that. they know that too and thats why they fight that way. we need to encourage more rounds liek this and more even rounds where you dont win them just for not getting dominated. this way the first kovalev fight would be scored 7 rounds to 0 with 5 even.
