I love it when counter programming hurts the sport, too!
Remains to be seen how much it hurts Showtime viewership, but in terms of ticket sales, it seems New York clearly chose the PBC fight. The competition from Kovalev might have resulted in the loss of a few hundred ticket sales, but can't be much more than that.
As for counter programming hurting the sport, an argument could be made that it could actually help the sport in the long run. If PBC (and/or ESPN) can bully HBO out of the business, the sport would benefit. Two universes was already bad enough. Three is awful.
I will agree on this part. I cant remember the last time an American heavyweight sold out big arenas.
I think we have to go back to Evander Holyfield to find an American heavyweight that sold more than more than 15K tickets.
Correct. Wilder is the most popular American heavyweight since Holyfield.
Look up the attendance numbers for some of those Byrd title defenses, or Ruiz title defense, or Brewster, or Briggs, etc.
Wilder inherited scorched earth. He may never make the huge huge money, but the next guy who does will owe a lot to him for repairing so much of the damage that had been done.
Where did I say anything negative about Wilder or blame him for anything in my post?
If I misinterpreted your previous post and it was a criticism of American boxing and not of Wilder, I apologize. Wilder is the most popular American heavyweight in decades, so you can understand my confusion when so many on this site try to claim that he isn't popular.
But if you want to compare him to a US based Eastern European champion ... it's a shame Deontay can't draw fans in NY the way GGG can.
Again, just because Deontay isn't one of the two most popular boxers in the US doesn't mean he isn't popular.
Now that Floyd is retired, the biggest draw in US boxing is Canelo. GGG is likely #2. Wilder is likely in the top 5. So when posters from other countries act like Wilder is some sort of failure, I think they have a very skewed perspective of what boxing is like in America. In terms of US born fighters, Wilder is, by far, one of the most popular we have. His popularity just doesn't compare to a guy like AJ because boxing isn't a popular sport in the US and AJ is a huge megastar in his country.
this is what you said gimp
"$50 - that's £36 in real money - to watch an American world HW champion defend his title in NYC, and they still have tickets unsold the day before the fight.
Unbelievable."
who else were u talking about?
whats it like to be such a sad troll? like how do you actually get through the day being such a pathetic POS...oh wait...by trolling......its sad....but carry on...you gotta do what you gotta to get by...i understand

IDK why they just had to have that fight on the same day as Wilder-Ortiz.
It’s the idiot that runs hbo sports, he’s doing it on purpose in attempt to drop some of the wilder showtime ratings and it’s funny cause max helped with the promo for the wilder fight by interviewing wilder on first take :lol1:
Well whoever is in NY show some support for the sport you say you love. Get out there and watch some fights!
If I was within a few hours Id be there, unfortunately Texas doesnt have a lot of fights like these. I did go to the Canelo/Smith fight at Cowboy stadium a few years ago and I paid $178 a ticket for pretty bleh seats. I bet that would buy pretty decent seats at either of these fights.
I didn't mention Wilder or put forward any argument in my comment, it was just a generalized observation about poor ticket sales for boxing events in NY this weekend.
What are you Wilder fans so hypersensitive and defensive about?

No, SHO has a much better talent roster than HBO. As far as I am concerned, HBO is garbage.
I was comparing why the different arenas have the different stats. I prefer SHO too.
Wilder is headlining a major NBA arena. He's the first American heavyweight in decades that can come close to filling a major NBA arena. You have to consider the conditions of the marketplace that he inherited. American heavyweight boxing was essentially dead before he came along. The previous American heavyweight champions, Briggs, Byrd, Oquendo, Brewster, etc were fighting in front of very small crowds.
So wouldn't it make more sense to praise Wilder for how much he's improved things here instead of blaming him for the poor conditions that existed before he came along?

i made my point and my argument you dumb twat
what part did you miss you ****stick?
i said no american born fighters are selling out arenas in the US.....US fight fans understand that the UK fight fans are more into boxing and more rabid
yet outside of the UK most fighters want to come to the US still.....canelo over here....golovkin over here...all the EE guys are over here fighting or living......
what was your point or argument again other than taking a shot at wilder for no reason you dumb POS?

Kafkod, let's try to discuss this reasonably. Everything is relative. We're both well aware that Anthony Joshua is one of the biggest stars in boxing, if not the biggest. We can't compare everyone else to him and say that all others are failures.
Kovalev is fighting the same night, in the same city, and they're giving away so many free tickets that it's driven the price down to $9. For a show in a very small venue.

Golovkin does have a very good promotional team behind him doe.
When you have no argument - play the race card.
Wherever did you get that idea from Cuck ... oops sorry, I meant Curt. Silly me.

there arent many US boxers from any class that are selling out arenas in the states....US fight fans are not as rabid as they are in the UK....we know this and acknowledge it fully.....i figured you didnt need to point out the obvious but you just couldnt resist taking a dig at wilder because you are a pathetic POS who hates people based on nationality and race

Awesome man! Enjoy the fight. I just got my credentials this morning. I'll be in the 5th row of press row. Haven't been this excited for a fight in a very long time.

boxing is not wildly popular in the US....no US born fighter is selling out arenas
Surely Kovalev could make more money fighting in Russia than the US .. and not get robbed and cheated by corrupt refs and judges in the process.
If that’s the then duva is a terrible promoter for not fighting in Russia. Her and her (billionaire backers)
