Following on from the Porter beating Usyk thread, i thought it might be a fun thread to make one about fights you can't imagine now that actually took place in the amateurs.
I heard Nonito Donaire beat James Kirkland as an amateur.
Also Calzaghe stopped Chris Byrd as an amateur around 1992.
Floyd Mayweather Jr. lost an Olympic trials match to Augie Sanchez. Sanchez had a mini Hagler-Hearns-Lite with Naseem Hamed, then fell apart and was out of the sport on a stretcher in a few years. I believe Sanchez is training fighters in Nevada now.
Who he beat twice, he lost to Khan after being a year away from boxing and returned back only to get a payday against Khan who was a extremely good amateur, beat the european champion at the olympics and was the only boxer in the games that scored two stoppages during the 2004 games, so is not like Khan was your average 17 year old, he was literally the second best lightweight in the world during that time.
Word, i knew he was at the end of his career, but didnt know he was not boxing for 1 year lol. that was pretty huge over here at the time, remember watching it on primetime free TV as a kid.
Ivan Calderon beat Miguel Cotto
Francisco Bojado fought Edwin Valero and Rocky Juarez
Shawn Porter also fought Daniel Jacobs, James DeGale, Shawn Estrada and Dominic Wade
Gary Russell beat Sadam Ali
Tyson Fury lost to David Price
Oscar Dela Hoya beat Robert Garcia
Keith Thurman lost to Demetrious Andrade
Gerald McClellan beat Roy Jones
Michael Grogan beat Evander Holyfield, Virgill Hill and Michael Nunn
Tommy Hearns beat Aaron Pryor and both of them lost to Howard Davis
Mario Kindelan beat Amir Khan, Miguel Cotto, Felix Trinidad, Felix Diaz, Somluck Kamsing (olympic champion) and Frankie Gavin
Andre Berto fought Vanes Martirosyan and Austin Trout
Amir Khan stopped Victor Ortiz
Terence Crawford lost to Yordenis Ugas
Stevie Johnston faced Winky Wright, Vernon Forrest and Shane Mosley
I have plenty more and a list of fighters that fought each other both as pros and amateurs.
Why is that strange? Kindelan is one of the GOAT Cuban amateurs ?
what's strange is he lost to a 17 year old Amir khan.
Ryan Farrag beat Luke Campbell, not too long before Campbell won Olympic gold. Pretty Sure Juergen Braehmer knocked out Ricky Hatton inside a round also
