Is Thurman doing to Spence what Mayweather did to Pacquiao?

Enough with the mayweather-pac debate. Mayweather is yesterday's news. He is irrelevant now.

By going on "vacation" and stalling the Spence fight, Thurman achieves several things. 1. Everyone starts calling him out more (all attention is good attention) and begging for his return. 2. He gets to watch Spence and Crawford expose and damage each other while he rests his body and mind. 3. He can choose to come back when the other guy's momentum has run its course and he himself is well rested. 4. By stalling, he is making the fight bigger financially. 5. When he finally fights and beats Spence, it will be more dramatic because everyone thought he was ducking. Make no mistake, the Spence Thurman fight WILL happen. But, Thurman wants to do it at a time that is most beneficial to HIM. This sh1t is exactly what Mayweather did to Pacquiao. Why is Thurman not at his best? He's been out of the ring for ages, has had his operation and should be well on his way to recuperating if he hasnt already. PLus he is having a tune up, which doesnt make sense in the modern boxing world, when guys barely fight twice a year. A tune up used to be an easy fight before fighting 3 or 4 times at the world level. In fairness to OP's horrible comparison I do think Thurman would gladly be "scared of needles" if it helps him keep his 0 while fighting guys beneath him or that he beat already and avoiding Spence. Hahahaa you must be a ton of fun at a party. Spence just won his first world title. Thurman has been out injured. They're gonna clear mandatories this year and then fight early next year. Relax.

Why would anyone who watches boxing expect us to get this fight quickly? Spence & Thurman are 1 & 2 in what is still a glamour division. Neither of them are 30. They are going to make us wait for this. 2019 is optimistic.There is no they making us wait only Thurman making us wait. Spence would love to fight Thurman now and he has wanted to fight Thurman and has been asking Thurman to fight him for at least the last two years or longer.

You are wrong about one important detail in my opinion. Thurman won't ever beat Spence because Spence is a better and younger fighter. All the resting while Spence is fighting stuff and having Spence lose momentum stuff and fighting Spence at the perfect time stuff won't work. The day he gets his courage up to fight Spence will be the day Spence knocks Thurman out. Spence doesn't care. He will go merrily on his way KOing the best boxers who will fight him 2 or 3 times a year and be respected as the world's best welterweight even if Thurman avoids him until the day Thurman retires.

Not even close. For one thing, Thurman has fought the best in his division at their prime...Garcia and Porter back to back. Something Floyd never accomplished. For another, Thurman would likely be the one to age and deteriorate faster than Spence if he chose to "marinate" this fight for five years. I think this fight happens in 2019 so long as they are both champions. Not even in the same universe. Mayweather came up with so many excuses (money, drugs, pac's record, his PPV#s, the Marquez KO, Bob Arum etc) he had his own self confused.

Nah. There's no reason to suppose Spence will be like Pacquaio and become a congressman, or discover a Lord Jesus he didn't know before, or start a singing hobby, or a basketball hobby. Spence is going to be focused on boxing for a long time. A better analogy would be a fighter waiting for another, rather a large fighter for his class, to move up to another weight division.

This is not May/Pac. And so many folks have no clue as to what really happened to draw out that fight so long. Folks still think it was all Floyd delaying. I think Floyd would have fought him in 2009 and again in 2012. But somewhere along the way- and with all of Arum's and Manny's excuses- Floyd figured out that interest was never going to die for the fight and he could cash out big-time whenever it happened. Thurman/Spence isn't that in any way, shape, or form. Even if you think Floyd avoided the fight for 6 years (which he clearly did not) this isn't Thurman avoiding a fight because he wants it to marinate for more money. This isn't Keith needing to heal. The difference is that Thurman won't be waiting until Spence is shot and/or previously KO'd. Spence keeps getting better and is younger and bigger than Keith. Both fighters will still be in their prime in 2019, so it's not remotely close to the same thing.
