joe waited for years for a really poor champion to come along, giving anyone decent a wide berth. Then failed Olympian Jeff came along and he pounced, winning his first big world title at the age of 34.
To be fair, however average Jeff was (after all, 40 year old roy jones tore him up), Joe still beat a titlist, which was the greatest accomplishment of his career up to that point.
He still had two decent wins to come - Kessler (who I believe was one handed that night), and Bika, before he was given Froch as a mandatory and curiously left the division and dumped the titles quicker than you can say Rachel Cordingley.
As to Jeffs best win - theres just an ageing robin reid as a claim.
whos crawford beat of note? The post you were replying to is correct, you can change the narrative very quickly. If crawford got whooped it would be easy to revise things and say, maybe he was overhyped cause his best wins were guys who hadnt beaten anyone themselves (indongo, burns, diaz). Thats what happens on this site, people hype fighters, when they lose they throw them on the dungheap (broner and j rock are good examples) then they start hyping the new kid on the block who they are so sure of being the real deal 'hes not like the last one'....
Terrence Crawford has cleaned put two divisions.
Jeff Lacy hasn't even beaten a ranked fighter.
Not even close to comparable.
You guys are too much... It was a great win for Joe, because of Lacy's popularity throughout the boxing world. He was a feared boxer, that had been predicted to become the next big thing. Imagine the confidence this boxer must have had - Then imagine taking a loss like that to a so called (in his own words) "slapper". It was devastating, it ruined him mentality to the point where he would never become the same again.
Just because he didn't beat anyone big or great, there might be other reasons for him not pulling through. I believe that the beatdown was the reason.
So basically Lacy was a beast but Calzaghe ruined him which is why we never saw him be a beast?
He was about as bad as Lemieux. He was definitely hyped. Calzaghe did hold quite a bit in the beginning and zapped Lacy's energy and confidence. I have never been a fan of Calzaghe but I do rate his win over a Kessler. He basically lost to Hopkins and beat a badly faded RJJ.
the writers over at doghouse predictions: only 1 for joe
the writers over at thesweetscience predictions: only 1 for joe
the boxingscene predictions: 6 for joe
and none of those who picked joe were even confident in their picks. it was all mostly close decisions. and the atmosphere with fans back then was that joe will get obliterated..you can google all these predictions since you cant post links on here.
its too easy to change the narrative after so many years. calling lacy a joke and clowing his resume.
if crawford gets beat at 147 i can also trash him saying "who he beat?".. if loma destroys mikey i can ask who mikey beat. you can do this to alot of fighters. and i keep going back not just to joe winning but HOW he won. you call lacy a joke because he didn't turn out to be special. and what im saying is thats because he took a career ending beating that night.
around 2009 mosley vs berto was being cooked up. berto was the next great thing. he was destined to take over. sadly he pulled out due to the earthquake but lets say the fight took place and mosley had destroyed him. you can easily say "who berto beat" to not give shane credit.
its a pathetic thing to do. the lacy victory solidified calzaghe as the best smw in the world. period.
You can't compare Lacy to Mikey Garcia or Terrence Crawford two of the top P4P fighters in the world.
Lacy literally beat no one of note and the only guy he fought he was half decent he struggles with. That's a fact.
Fair play for beating the hype job in Lacy but the fact remains the guy is terrible.

He was a hypejob from the get go kinda like Lucian Bute. He didnt beat anybody good in particular but then he looked good in beating them so hype train was on.
I dont give calzaghe too much credit. Calzaghe slaps like a girl. Fuk calzaghe
Mate, facking say that to Joe's facking face in facking Newbridge you facking wankah! Joe was the facking best super facking middle facking weight of all facking time! Facking Jones and facking 'opkins were facking afraid to fight Joe in 'is facking prime!
Yet the odds were basically split down the middle?
We are talking about a guy who barely beat a shot Omar Sheika and that was literally the only fringe contender he fought.

Im a brit unfortunately but I don't care for lacy but the majority of sheeple over here would hold lacy in high esteem purely because calzaghe beat him which for some reason I can't comprehend propels lacy to goat opponent level for calzaghe/some brit fans not all though including myself.
Lacy was unproven and calslappy ovverrated and protected. Struggled to win and got dropped by a 43 year old hopkins that says it all
Why are you unfortunate to be a brit? Or are you just trying to get some american fans on here? Show some patriotism for God's sake.
Let me translate this question - "Lacy was rubbish and Calzaghe shouldn't get credit for beating him."
Reality is Lacy was much more highly regarded in the US back then than he was here. In a division where Calzaghe had beaten pretty much everyone except Kessler, Lacy was the next best thing. PLus he had genuine KO power.
Calzaghe didnt just beat him, he humiliated him. To retroactively act like Lacy was a nobody is stupid.
It's not like he got credit for beating Gatti...
Gatti is in the Hall of Fame somehow.
You reckon that Jeff Lacy will ever make it in?
lacy was ruined that night. not just beat. he was RUINED. so if your excuse for downplaying that win from joe is to say lacy didn't turn out to be nothing special. give joe credit for that. lacys career got ended that night. the trainer left him in taking a beating with the hope lacy would connect a KO blow that never came. horrible gamble. you can still google the predictions and count on one hand those who picked calzaghe. even "experts" from the UK had lacy winning by demolition.
i remember how one writer described lacy "mike tyson power with mayweather speed". calzaghe was seen as washed up. he was coming in with like 18 title defenses and heavily criticized for never fighting in America. he was called a "slapper". i was one of those that had to eat my words also. theres no need in playing stupid now. that was hands down joes best performance and lacys career was finished.

They hail him as a hypejob, not a great fighter.
Similar to Broner before Maidana beat him. Broner was seen as the next big thing before that. Now 3 losses later he is regarded as a B fighter / gatekeeper

And why do the Brits hold him in such high regard?

Thanks man, and just being realistic I think the majority of brit fighters are vastly overrated mainly by us brits. I suppose it happens in most places. But seems more pronounced over here due to media coverage and things like sky tv with paid shills like bellew spouting absolute bollocks to the casuals lol
respect to a fan of boxing! i salute you.
Could have sworn the majority of the sports journos and even the guys that write for this site had lacy knocking seven shade of **** out of Joe.
They aren't British... Buy shoulder loves turning it into a country Vs country thing. There were plenty of boxing "experts" from the us side of the pond thinking lacy would demolish him
You damn well know Calzaghe is one of the greatest of all time. Beating a completely shot RJJ, and slapping a 43 year old b-hop to a bs decision completely solidifies that. Incredible resume.
Yep, B-Hop was well into his safety first phase.
i have no prob with joe really...he was a very good fighter....but we all know jeff wasnt sheit really....i met jeff months before at the winky/soliman fight....was a nice enough guy...but he was all physique...he looked the part....but wasnt a boxer....
