This is spot on. With Mike Tyson, you could guarantee public interest regardless of the opponent.
Canelo is certainly a top dog in the sport right now, but the state of the game is very different to what it once was.
If the number of 1.3MM is accurate than it shows me two things IMO.
Golovkin has a decent size fan base, and for a guy with no demographic advantage who came to the states at 30 he's done incredibly well, but all that said it just isn't that big. It isn't Cotto level. Not sure where I'd put it in a historical perspective. But that really isn't surprising.
What I do think though is this might show that Canelo's popularity has leveled off in the States. His fight drew 1K more than the Chavez fight. In the biggest and most dangerous fight of his career he did the same against Chavez who really hasn't accomplished much in his career.
We'll see if the 1.3MM holds up but if it does I feel like Canelo might have already hit his peak popularity in the US.
Mayweather can probably make the case, but barely, that he could carry a fight by himself for a million.
The only guy who I feel comfortable saying he could do a million PPV (and adjusted for the times) was Mike Tyson. He could fight just about anyone for a while and bring in the equivalent of a million buys.

Doesn't ggg have his own promotion? Loeffler license is tied to k2 or something like that but there is no current ties between ggg and k2?
If he's getting a fighters purse and some kind of ceo share from the promoters share, he might even be making more money than we think.
There is almost no chance he made less. These guys know what they are doing. Don't let some guy posting on forum with zip knowledge of actual convince you Golovkin's isn't ecstatic about his payday. He isn't saying dang I should have taken that flat fee. If indeed that was even real.
how do you do hindsight without any of the facts??? you dont know if the offer was real. you dont know the split of the ppvs, the split of the live gate, etc...this is futile and only reveals your bias because without the facts your bias just filled in the blanks.
Lots of fill in the blanks.
The chances that Golovkin made less than $15MM is highly unlikely.
Wasn't this the same guy saying the fight wasn't even going to do 1MM buys just a day ago? I may be mistaken.
Canelo v Liam Smith did 300k
Canelo v Amir Khan did just under 600k
No, Canelo does not draw a million by himself.

The offer was for a fight on Sept 16th 2017.
What part of that don't you understand?
this is the guy that thinks ggg ducked ward because he fails to look at the timeline. same problem. ward wanted a tune up and then the ggg fight but wbc already said cotto-canelo winner had to face ggg next so ward wanted to fight him at the same exact time as that fight. obv a no. he doesnt care though. he expects fighters to do dumb things just for him i guess.
If GGG had accepted an offer to fight in Sept 2017 that would have made the fight happen in May 2017........
:Thinkingo
Yea...gb never had any intention of making the fight any sooner, which is a damn shame. As a fan, i really wish promoters didn't have to waste so much time "marinating" fights just to pander to casual fans and the uninformed general public. The ideal time for that fight was soon after canelo beat cotto...they could have shared a card for their next fights, and then faced eachother right after. But instead we go canelo vs khan, smith and chavez jr...and ggg vs wade and brook. All worthless fights.

Yes, if Golovkin has accepted the flat fee offer, not only would the fight have happened, it likely happens May 2017.
HBO's main goal, for basically the last three years, has been to will Golovkin into becoming a PPV attraction. With the money agreed to, HBO would put the lean on Alvarez and get the fight that they actually wanted.
4 months earlier? What about the other year? Good thing ggg held out then.

With money no longer being the issue,I have no doubt that HBO would've put their thumb on the scale to adjust the timing of the fight.

Except 2m = 160m so your 40m off to start before you get into the rest of your agenda driven made up figures.
Fait to assume since the purse split was 63/37 that would be how some of the other splits would work out rather than use B.S figures.
Except it's 1.3 million lol
Events can under-deliver, watch seems to have now been the case here.
Hindsight being 20/20, if the question was take the rumored $15m or simply get his share from K2 off of the 1.3m PPV homes and the gate, the $15m likely put more money in his pocket.

better question is...does anyone think there would have actually been a fight if the alleged flat fee was accepted...or was there even a flat fee offer at all? after canelo beat cotto, there was only one roadblock keeping the ggg fight from happening...and that roadblock has been known to indulge in cocaine and womens undergarments.

Good point/question.
There's a reason why big names in big fights don't take flat fees.
