He is the real MW king. He would throw combinations that GGG would just cover up from. And Sergio had the stamina and consistency to win comfortably, maybe a couple shaky moments.
Canelo doesn't have the footwork to cut the ring off Martinez nor does he have the work rate. Martinez would have prob get hit with some flashy punches from time to time but his speed and stamina and angles would make Canelo look lost.
Also Martinez had KO power with his speed and timing that both GGG and Canelo would respect to not take too many risks

I'm without words from that 3 piece you touched me with..
So he wasn't in his prime when he fought Macklin but was in his prime when he fought Chaves. So what your telling me is Martinez prime is Williams-Pavlik. This is like when people choose when to call bernard hopkins prime. Martinez was an exicting fighter just leave it at that. Don't say he would beat ATGs bc his prime lasted 3 fights.
Read my previous post, he sold his belt to both Chavez and cotto, Cotto took his opportunity, chavez fat as" didn't. Martinez had a short peak at 160. He had the same issues as GGG when no one would give him a chance at 154. Do some of you guy even study the history of boxing?
Boxing didn't start in 2012 when GGG beats Proksa you know.

I think Canelo and GGG both beat martinez. Martinez was not that durable and inside fighting by both Canelo and GGG would wear him down.
Martinez could have possibly outworked Canelo. I would confidently pick Canelo to win if he had better cardio and didn't fight in spurts. I think Canelo would have dropped Sergio with the shots he landed on GGG.
Golovkin on the other hand would have stopped Martinez late. Martinez had faster feet than Canelo, but wasn't a hard target to hit. His defense relied on his feet. Canelo is more of a complete defensive fighter than Martinez, he could use his feet, duck and slip punches a lot better. That's why he had success against GGG that I can't see Martinez having.
Martinez also didn't have no where near as good of a chin as Canelo. Martinez would win the early rounds, but GGG would close the distance and batter Martinez to a late stoppage, dropping multiple times along the way. He's smaller and only fought at 160 because 154 didn't have good fights for him.
I love Martinez, but he's retired and now people want to overrate him and say he whoops the two best middleweights currently. He didn't even always look dominant when he was fighting guys who were the same level of opponents Golovkin was destroying. He was a great athlete and an exciting fighter, but he wasn't an ATG who could be a champ in any era.
Prime Sergio Martinez would of whooped both Canelo and GGG that night.
He is the real MW king. He would throw combinations...
I'd rather agree... :) But GGG called him out!!! and, and... :)
I loved Martinez, i was a big fan. Really liked his style.
I think he's skilled enough to keep away from GGG for a while, but it think GGG would eventually break him down and stop him late. Martinez could be a bit chinny.
Again, i think Sergio's skill set could make Canelo look clumsy and slow. But eventually i think Canelo would get into the fight.
I'd probably pick Canelo on points.
They'd be good fights though. Prime Martinez was very good.
If you think Martinez that fought Macklin was prime then you don't know much about boxing...Sorry.

Of course it would have been a great fight, Martinez peaked around the williams fight. After that he was done with injuries, even his fight with Macklin you could see he wasn't himself anymore. He had to fight low level competition and cash out with both chavez and cotto when he had his chance, this was after getting denied a chance at Vernon Forrest.
extremely short peak 1 year.
I think GGG peaked against Proksa and has been slowly on the decline physically due to age, but still he is 80% of his absolute prime because his boxing IQ likely went up (even if by a little) but his physical prime is now at least 5 years removed.
I mean I'm a Martinez fanboy but c'mon lettuce be real. Prime Martinez was struggling to beat Macklin in what world does he beat either Canelo or Golovkin.

I guess that's true, but still a prime sergio vs a prime golovkin would be a hell of a fight, i still favor Golovkin, current golovkin isn't prime to me at least not physically prime.

Nah that was a cripple Martinez. And i don't blame him for fighting Murray and Cotto. He paid his due and was done by then.

Lol. Martin Murray (one of Golovkin's KO victim) was arguably robbed against Sergio Martinez and was at times, more than holding his own in their fight and Martinez ended up in a very close fight against him. Yet somehow Martinez will defeat Golovkin with that much ease and such a big margin?
Golovkin does a repeat on Sergio Martinez as what he did to Martin Murray. He would break Martinez down by stalking him and applying pressure and then stop him late.
ironically Sergio had the chance to fight GGG he chose not to, so i can only go by the fact that Sergio in his prime chose not to fight GGG in his prime.
But its always nice to see these threads of what fighter A in his prime would do to Fighter B who he avoided.
He probably knew that he didn't have the mobility anymore, and decided against it.

Man, Sergio in his prime while brief, was such a formidable fighter. I have a hard time picking against him at his peak. The angles, power, speed, southpaw stance, will to win, all of it was spectacular. I bet the fights with Canelo and Golovkin would be special though.
Very special, i was just thinking about the prime days of Martinez (Which was brief like you pointed out), and i could see the hands down, shoulders moving, back left foot on the canvas moving etc, eyes fixed looking for the opponent to throw so he could counter with his superior speed.
