Cuba came in first place in the 2017 AIBA World Boxing Championships, with five gold medals and two silver. Pretty impressive, when you consider there were only ten weight divisions.
This year's edition was held in Hamburg, Germany, from August 25 to September 2. Uzbekistan came in second place with six total medals (1 gold, 3 silver, 2 bronze), and Kazakhstan came in third with six medals as well (1 gold, 2 silver, 3 bronze). The United States came in seventh, with 1 silver and 2 bronze.
Well done, Cubanos. :fing02:
Gaming terms.
Often they will release an item/class/character etc etc that is op (overpowered) then the community will cry to get it nerfed in the next patch (update). In other words, nerf = reduce/weaken the power of such item/class/character etc.
Haha Thanks for the translation. I get exactly what he meant now. I had to look up "nerfed." (I definite sign of aging. Lmao) I just didn't get exactly how Dok meant it. But, yeah, Cuba definitely was overpowered for this last WC. Five of ten possible golds is tremendous. It's like the old days.
Hope they get nerfed in the next patch.
?? What do you mean? Lol

Ukrainian team is definitely on the down swing, all the of 2012 class talk about how the new talent on the team is just lacking...
There are some issues with funding etc...since the Ukrainian revolution all those gangsters that were in power fled to Russia and guess what....all those gangsters loved to spend money on sport, be it boxing or soccer. Now the country is too busy rebuilding politically and sport is suffering, but I guess I'll take the tradeoff for now.
Will have to see how the current crop develops before the next Olympics.
But Cuba is back strong as ever :boxing:
As a native Cuban, I totally get it, man. Sorry on the one hand, glad on the other. Political shifts benefit some and hurt others. First and foremost, I wish your people the best. And I hope your sports recover ASAP. Still three years to prepare for the next summer games.
Frankly, I'm surprised Ukraine didn't do better, but they did bring home a gold medal. That put them in a tie for fifth place with France, and on top of the US, which had one silver and two bronze, but no gold.

Congrats to Cuba, good to see them do well :) A lot of medals they took home.
Ukraine didn't do so well, they won the Euros but at the Worlds they failed.
Man I'm already waiting for the next Olympics.

ah ok, fair enough
well I hope Ramirez makes some money outta the ams at the very least
I wish all these guys the best. Scores of great Cuban athletes have died on the vine because of governmental policies. Some of the ones lucky enough to get off the island were not quite as young as one would've liked. The wheels of change grind slowly.
They were easier for a moment. After Trump took over, things became different, and are liable to change further. I'm not up on all the wrinkles. I just know it's not easy.

Have recent changes in Cuba not made things easier?

Yessir. Erislandy is Felix Savon's nephew.
As for Robeisy, it's not so easy for a 23 year old Cuban to turn pro. I don't know how difficult the current situation makes it for him, but it's not easy. He'll have to do it soon to realize his full potential. Gamboa and Lara were 25 when they defected, and Rigo was almost 29. Any professional sport requires an early start for ultimate success. Boxing is unforgiving.

Any relation to the legendary savon?
And yep I know ramirez from the Olympics. I was hoping he would've turned pro by now.

I'm not especially familiar with all the Cubans that won medals. One of our best, two time Olympic gold medalist Robeisy Ramirez (23), didn't even compete.
Joahnys Argilagos (20) won gold at light flyweight.
Yosvany Veitía (25) won gold at flyweight.
Lázaro Álvarez (26) won silver at lightweight.
Andy Cruz (22) won gold at light welterweight.
Roniel Iglesias (29) won silver at welterweight.
Julio César La Cruz (28) won gold at light heavyweight.
Erislandy Savón (27) won gold at heavyweight.

Where do I get news concerning amateur boxing? Is their an equivalent to boxingscene, but just for the amateurs?
Pro boxing already takes up a lot of time, but now after being very close to the world championship I am interested to know more about the amateur scene.
Amateur boxing just doesn't get the same attention. You'll find the bigger events mentioned on Boxingscene, but that's about it. The following website offers up-to-date results of amateur boxing events.

Sugar Ramos passed away yesterday in Mexico, his adopted homeland.
Read about it early this morning. I figured Boxingscene would do a eulogy later today.
Rest In Peace Ultiminio "Sugar" Ramos
This was broadcast on the BBC but I was out all day and completely forgot about it. I'll try and get some highlights from somewhere.

obviously you have never heard of Napoles, Kid Gavilan, Kid Chocolate, Florentino Fernandez, Luis M. Rodrigues, by the way Ali learn a lot from Luis, Kid Tunero, Niño Valdes, Sugar Ramos, Jose Legra, Benny Paret. And more recently Dorticos, Barrera, Machado, Socarras, Gonzalez, Luis GArcia, Ramon Luis, and a few more. Do you really think that Lara defines the Cuban boxing? If you do you really don't know boxing, much less Cuban boxing. The most heated fights I ever watched, was back in Cuba, Playa Giron tournaments. And that was amateur,
Lara and Rigo are two of the most high-profile Cuban fighters. They're not the most exciting boxers to watch. People that aren't familiar with Cuban fighters in general have a tendency to look at those two and assume it's the Cuban style. That was never an issue until they turned pro.
