Bob Arum about MMA in 2009:
"I mean it's not a sport that shows great, great talent. The guys who throw punches can't throw a punch to save their ass, when the punches land, the guys have no chins. These are not like boxers!"
Conor McGregor (the top MMA striker ever who was declared a "hard hitter" with a "death touch" by MMA fans) was EXPOSED as a pillowfisted arm puncher with no endurance and no durability. The guy couldn't hurt a fly and has no chin, absolutely none.
If Conor is a hard hitter by MMA standards I dread to think how pillowfisted other MMA fighters are. On the other hand boxers would probably put people in coma with those 4 oz gloves, imagine Canelo unloading combos on those chinny MMA fighters.
Oh, the myopia.
Correct yourself.
Say what you want to say but make the caveat: For Boxing... (being a much more limited form of fighting, and it's limited set of skills)
He's a boxing promoter talking about mma fighters abilities versus boxing, in the field he knows. Punches are unconventional and often ineffective, defenses are often ill prepared and insubstantial. Truth. Now ask him how boxers would take to mma, then I'm sure his answers would be different.

MMA is more limited because the threats of kicks and takedowns limit the footwork.
Boxing allows real mastery of the craft, MMA doesn't.
Your ability to take a punch goes up as you get more comfortable with it.
Wrong, either you got dat beard or you don't. Been in there with world champs in boxing and kickboxing. Seen dozens and dozens of cats move/fall in/out of gyms.

Arum might be evil as fück but the man has real knowledge.
Another reason why you can't compare the two sports. Boxers have been getting hit in the face/head since very young in training/sparring. I mean nonstop for years. It's almost like it's hardened their head. In MMA, your being hit all over the place and taken down trying to see how far you can stretch like a pretzel before tapping. These guys aren't being conditioned to take punches to the head for 12 rds.
Boxers are throwing punches in training 24/7. All the muscles being used for throwing a punch are being strengthened whether you are a puncher or not. Your ability to take a punch goes up as you get more comfortable with it. In other words, everything in stand up is leveled up minus requiring any kicking/elbowing.
Taking a guy who is above average in striking in MMA and putting him in with a boxer, of course a lot of what he did not have to train early on start to show up. And yes, I know Conor started with boxing at an early age but I'm sure he abandoned getting really good at it when he made the switch.Great Post!
yes but in MMA he is allowed to kick, knee, elbow, grabble to subdue his opponent. When he lands his punches, it acts as a SUPPLEMENT to his other attacks. In boxing, he is exclusively punching.
Which is why boxing fans watch boxing because we only care about the punch aspect of fighting and nobody does it better then boxing. :boxing:
