Is Ward really P4P #1?

I'm sorry but I'm not gonna sit here and pretend he's #1 because he has two wins over Kovalev. One was a close fight that he did not win, the other was a fight he most probably would've won fair and square, but he didn't. He repeatedly hit Kovalev below the belt, hell the fight even ended on a low blow. Haven't seen anything like that before. That's the story of his career. His biggest wins are always surrounded with asterisks and controversies. He's not #1. Nobody is imo.So he lost two fights that he won? Is Gonzalez too high?... maybe they felt Roman didn't lose... :) (even this site -- i.e. boxingscene -- still has Gonzalez at #1, because they didn't update their rankings... :) The guy lost, that's that. Ward beat the top guy at LH not only once but twice. Crawford will likely move up to second after a win over Indongo and Lomachenko will be deservingly third, he does however hold a victory over a guy who was shelved for a year, that in itself detracts from Loma's win, shame really as he absolutely bossed Walters to the point he quit. Gonzalez for me does not deserve to be in the top six after losing , for me around seventh a place behind Golovkin.

Ward didn't have to sacrifice really anything to fight Kovalev. 175 was no big move. This wasn't a Pac or Mayweather type of move where they were legitimately fighting guys who were much bigger than them. As a boxing fan I would like to have seen Golovkin and Ward fight at 168lbs but I don't believe it made any sense in the world for GGG from 2015 and on. In fact it would have been down right idiotic given the circumstances. He was sitting on the silver goose (golden being Mayweather) from a financial perspective and he had fought his whole career at MW only to throw it potentially down the drain. Name another boxer who has done that given a similar situation? Why challenge Mayweather, you already answered that, money. But also glory. Casuals just see Mayweather and think if you beat him that's all that matters. Even a lot of boxing people don't appreciate size difference. How often do you hear people talk about Mayweather's natural size advantage over Pac? So if Golovkin fought Mayweather he'd have a size advantage but no one outside the hard core boxing people would bring that up if Golovkin won. Just as if Golovkin moved up and lost no one would say Ward had a natural size advantage. Golovkin isn't retiring, Sanchez already said he has several years worth of fighting still. I look forward to 9/16. We'll learn a lot about both fighters, this is clearly one of those defining fights for both guys. Yep totally agree. Don't know of any fighter who doesn't wait around for that one big fight that will secure them financially for life. It's happening right now all the way from 130 to the higher weights. I blame the casual boxing fans for this to be honest. Back in the day two good fighters could share the squared circle and even if one lost it wouldn't be that detrimental to their career. These days any fighter takes an L and the casuals jump on that quick trolling the hell out of them on social media. The way I see it is if you usually are matched up well with opponents and you lose there is no shame in that at all because you've lost to someone who is your equal in one department or the other. That's why we're also seeing fighters quit these days. They've been so poorly matched, as their resumes would suggest, that you just know once it gets tough it's a situation they're not used to and will more than likely fold to the pressure. I also like to see fights where they are not taking someone who started out at lightweight all the way upto middleweight thinking they're the same size after a quick bulk. If someone started out at a lower weight it means they were naturally at that size at one point and have had either had eat their way up or bulk. Whilst the opponent probably has been at a much higher weight from the start meaning he was always naturally bigger which means he can get even bigger on fight night. It makes for an uneven match-up and unless you've got Floyd/Sugar Ray Leonard level of super refined skill to overcome that huge obstacle then you will not have much of a chance. Anyway to hell with all that. Let's just hope we see a classic fight between Canelo and Golovkin.

Pound for pound isn't resume and who you beat in the past. It's how you good you THINK a boxer is for his weight class right now. It should be based on how good he looks right now in recent fights. Fights he had many years ago should have no bearing on his PFP rating. Many think PFP and resume are the same thing but they are not the same at all. Resume is what a boxer has already done. PFP is a person's opinion of how good a boxer is today for his pounds and what he is capable of doing. PFP usually can't be proven. Ward can't fight Loma or Rigo and they will have no common opponents. Since it's based on opinion there are no right or wrong answers. If you think Ward is the best PFP then you are right, he is. If you think Ward isn't the best PFP boxer in the world then you are equally right, he isn't the best PFP.Sorry but that's not how you evaluate pfp fighters. What you said is only a minute part of ranking pfp fighters. Ward has the resume the "do now" and the skill to be called pfp best today when you out it all together. Crawford is my pfp best and favorite but Wards resume is better. Now if l do my own personal list Bud is #1 pfp.

Ward should have been p4p number one a long time ago. When he came out of the Super Six with an unblemished record against the best in his division that was one of the biggest feats of any boxer in modern history. The Super Six had some great boxers in their primes with varying styles. He adjusted to each fighter extremely well. I suppose it was inactivity that put him under the radar of the casual fans but this whole thing with Kovalev just proved the man adjusts and finds a way to win. Adjusted from the first debatable decision to hammer home with an improved display in the second fight whereas Kovalev didn't show me anything new from their last fight. If anything Kovalev looked...worse. Ward has ring smarts. Knows how to be cute in there and get away with it. It was upto Kovalev to negate this and he failed on both occasions. I love boxing and I'm not a fanboy of any fighter. Never will be. I love all the different styles that fighters from all over the world bring. I love it when a fighter wants to test himself against the best. There's no shame in Kovalev losing to Ward controversial or not. At least Kovalev wanted to fight Ward and signed up immediately for it. Can't say the same about Golovkin who I feel should have taken the Ward fight and I'm saying that without any disrespect towards Golovkin. Then again I suppose at Golovkins age he was waiting around for that big money fight and that was Canelo. So right now a guy who is 35 years old can be viewed much higher on the P4P list than he was when he was 28 and probably in his peak prime. But because he didn't have as many wins he wasn't ranked nearly as high.

Ward is listed as the #1 P4P fighter in the sport right now, and I'm not sure why. His resume looks impressive, but several of his wins should have asterisks next to them. Dawson: Ward fought a weight-drained Dawson, rather than move up to LHW to fight him. Kovalev: Won a debatable decision in the first fight, and fouled numerous times in the second one. Kessler: Headbutted a lot in this fight. Respectfully, this is ridiculous. We can do this sort of garbage for every win by every fighter. Ward is undefeated and has a resume as good as any active fighter in the sport. IMO he deserves to be ranked #1 p4p.

While many black men who I admire are also great fighters. You conveniently look past that fact.
